Makoti Sibongile Khawula (born 7 December 1954) is a South African politician and previous anti-apartheid activist from KwaZulu-Natal serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party since 2014. Khawula is known for her insistence on speaking Zulu in Parliament. [2] [3]
Khawula was born on 7 December 1954 in Durban in the former Natal Province. She only fulfilled grade 8 while attending school. She later completed a certificate in surveying from the Durban University of Technology and a Doctors For Life course in Home Based Care. [1]
Khawula joined the African National Congress (ANC) and participated in anti-apartheid activities in the Durban communities of Inanda and KwaMashu in the 1980s. [4] She became an organiser for the ANC in 1990. Within the ANC,she was a member of the party's Women's League,a provincial election organiser in 1994 and a development activist for the party. She became a member of the party's Regional Executive Committee in 2013. She was also the chairperson of both the South African Communist Party (SACP) and South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in ward 54 of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. [1] She left the ANC in 2013 and joined the newly-formed EFF in the same year. [4]
Khawula became a Member of Parliament on 21 May 2014 following the 2014 general elections. She was assigned to serve on the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation and the Portfolio Committee on Women in the Presidency. [3]
She soon became known for her insistence on speaking isiZulu and isiXhosa when delivering speeches or asking oratory questions. She insists that she will speak the language of her constituency. [3] In February 2016,Khawula requested that the National Council of Provinces Chairperson Thandi Modise address her in isiZulu,as she does not understand English. [5]
She was re-elected to a second term in the 2019 general elections. As of June 2019,she serves as an Alternate Member of the Portfolio Committee on Women,Youth,Children and People with Disability. [1]
In the Register of Members' Interests for 2014,Khawula declared that she received social grants for two foster children. [6] These were not part of the 2015 register. [3]
The Inkatha Freedom Party is a right-wing political party in South Africa. Although registered as a national party,it has had only minor electoral success outside its home province of KwaZulu-Natal. Mangosuthu Buthelezi,who served as chief minister of KwaZulu during the Apartheid period,founded the party in 1975 and led it until 2019. He was succeeded as party president in 2019 by Velenkosini Hlabisa.
Dianne Kohler Barnard is a South African politician and former journalist,and a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance (DA). There have been many political assassinations in post-apartheid South Africa. In 2013 it was reported that there had been more than 450 political assassinations in the province of KwaZulu-Natal since the end of apartheid in 1994. In July 2013 the Daily Maverick reported that there had been "59 political murders in the last five years". In August 2016 it was reported that there had been at least twenty political assassinations in the run up to the local government elections on the 3rd of August that year,most of them in KwaZulu-Natal.
Sindisiwe Lydia Chikunga is a South African politician who is serving as the Minister of Transport since March 2023. A member of the African National Congress,she has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2004. Chikunga had previously served as Deputy Minister of Transport twice,from 2012 to 2019 and again from 2021 to 2023,and as Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration from 2019 until 2021. She is a midwife by profession.
Sihle Zikalala is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal who has been the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2023,representing the African National Congress. Before his redeployment to the national government,he had been the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal and a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu is a South African lawyer and African National Congress (ANC) politician who has been serving as the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health since May 2019. She became a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in May 2014. She was the chair of the legislature's Agriculture Portfolio Committee from 2014 to 2019. Simelane-Zulu was previously involved in the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL).

On 11 September 2019,Ntuli became the Member of the Executive Council for Transport,Community Safety &Liaison,replacing Mxolisi Kaunda,who was elected Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Ntuli died on 16 January 2021,from complications of COVID-19.

KwaZulu-Natal is one of the nine multi-member constituencies of the National Assembly of South Africa,the lower house of the Parliament of South Africa,the national legislature of South Africa. The constituency was established in 1994 when the National Assembly was established by the Interim Constitution following the end of Apartheid. It is conterminous with the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The constituency currently elects 41 of the 400 members of the National Assembly using the closed party-list proportional representation electoral system. She was elected to five-year terms on the ANC's National Executive Committee in 2012 and 2022.
Beatrice Thembekile Ngcobo was a South African politician and activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 until her death in 2018. She served the KwaZulu-Natal constituency from 2009 onwards and chaired the Portfolio Committee on Tourism from 2014 to 2018.
Khawula is known for speaking IsiZulu in parliament and on social media platforms has gained popularity for providing a degree of entertainment during sessions in the house.
