Wouter Wynand Wessels (born 18 March 1985) is a South African politician and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus). He is also the chairperson of Parliament's Standing Committee on the Auditor General. He took office as an MP on 1 December 2017 and succeeded the former party leader Pieter Mulder,who resigned from Parliament a day earlier.
Wessels was born on 18 March 1985 in East London,South Africa. He matriculated from Grens High School (Afrikaans:Hoërskool Grens) and subsequently studied at the University of the Free State. He was the FF Plus's campus leader. [1] [2]
After university,he worked for the FF Plus in the Free State. He became the personal secretary to party leader Pieter Mulder following his appointment as a deputy minister in the cabinet of South Africa. He served in the post for five years from 2009 to 2014. [1]
He serves as the deputy leader of the FF Plus in the Free State and is the party's head of elections. Wessels is a member of the party's federal council,the federal executive and the national executive committee. He was the national youth leader of the FF Plus. [2]
Wessels became a Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature in 2013. He returned to the provincial legislature following the 2014 elections. Pieter Mulder resigned from Parliament in November 2017. Wessels was then appointed to the National Assembly to take up Mulder's seat. His wife,Tammy,filled his seat in the provincial legislature. He was re-elected as an MP in May 2019. His wife,Tammy,was also appointed as an MP for the FF Plus. [3] Wessels was re-elected to the National Assembly in the 2024 general election. [4]
Wessels married Tammy Breedt in 2015. They were the victims of a home burglary in 2018. [5]
The Freedom Front Plus is a right-wing political party in South Africa that was formed in 1994. It is led by Pieter Groenewald. Since 2024,it is a part of the current South African government of national unity together with the African National Congress (ANC),the Democratic Alliance and other parties.
The Conservative Party was a far-right South African political party that sought to preserve many aspects of apartheid in the system's final decade,and formed the official opposition in the white-only House of Assembly in the last seven years of minority rule. It declined quickly after apartheid ended,before being merged with the Freedom Front in 2004.
Pieter Willem Adriaan Mulder is a South African politician and the former leader of the Freedom Front Plus. He served as the Deputy Minister of Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries in the Cabinet of President Jacob Zuma from 2009–14.
The Federal Alliance was a small South African political party that contested the South African general election in 1999. The party was led by business magnate Louis Luyt,and founded in 1998. They later joined the Democratic Party and the New National Party to form the Democratic Alliance but eventually broke away. The party did not contest the general election in 2004,instead fielding two candidates to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on the DA's electoral lists. The FA gained these two seats in 2005 when the MPLs defected during the floor crossing window. This soured its relationship with the DA and ended all co-operation between the two parties.
Petrus Johannes "Pieter" Groenewald is a South African politician who is currently serving as Minister of Correctional Services since July 2024. He has served as the Leader of the Freedom Front Plus since his election in November 2016. He started his political career by being elected Mayor of Stilfontein in 1988. He relinquished the position in 1989 due to his election to the House of Assembly. Groenewald co-founded the Freedom Front in 1994,and served as a Member of the National Assembly until his election to the North West Provincial Legislature in 1999. He returned to the National Assembly in 2001.
Wynand Johannes Boshoff is a South African academic and politician from the Northern Cape serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) since 2019. He has been serving as the Provincial Leader of the FF+ since 2015. He previously served as a municipal councillor of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality from 2016 to 2019. Boshoff is the grandson of the assassinated apartheid-era Prime Minister of South Africa,Hendrik Verwoerd,who served from 1958 until 1966,and the son of Afrikaner enclave Orania founder,Carel Boshoff.
Marcelle Frieda Maritz was a South African politician who served as a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature sfrom 2019 until 2024. She was a member of the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and the party's provincial leader. She served as a municipal councillor of the Mogalakwena Local Municipality prior to her appointment to provincial legislature. Maritz was a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA) until 2015,when she resigned from the party after allegations of racism. The DA soon laid criminal charges regarding racism against her in 2019.
Pieter Mey is a South African politician and former police lieutenant who was elected to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in the 2024 general election. A member of the Freedom Front Plus,he serves as the party's leader in the Eastern Cape. Mey had previously served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2019 until 2024.
Tamarin "Tammy" Breedt is a South African politician who is the national youth leader of the Freedom Front Plus as well as a member of the National Council of Provinces. She was a Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature from December 2017 until May 2019 and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from May 2019 until May 2024. Breedt was married to fellow FF Plus MP Wouter Wessels.
Ignatius Michael "Michal" Groenewald is a South African politician who was elected to the North West Provincial Legislature in the 2024 provincial election. A member of the Freedom Front Plus (FF+),he is the party's provincial leader in the North West. Groenewald's father Pieter is the national leader of the Freedom Front Plus. He was previously a municipal councillor in the Matlosana Local Municipality and a member of parliament.
Philippus Adriaan van Staden,known as Philip van Staden,is a South African politician from Gauteng. He has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) since 2019. He previously represented the FF+ in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019. Van Staden was a municipal councillor of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality from 2011 to 2014.
Frederik Jacobus Mulder,known as Jaco Mulder,is a South African politician who is an incoming member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. He previously served in the provincial legislature between 2004 and 2014. A member of the Freedom Front Plus (FF+),Mulder served as a member of the National Assembly of South Africa between 2019 and 2024.
Heloïse Denner is a South African politician and attorney. She is a member of the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and a representative of the party in the National Assembly of South Africa. In 2019,she and Tammy Wessels became the first women to represent the party in Parliament.

After the 2004 election,he became the chairperson of the provincial parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA). He joined the African National Congress in 2005. Gelderblom served as an ANC MP from 2009 to 2014.
Theo Willem Coetzee was a South African politician. He served as a member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Democratic Alliance from 2009 until his defection to the Freedom Front Plus ahead of the 2014 general election. From 2019 Coetzee was the sole representative of the Freedom Front Plus in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.
