The 2018 Kenya handshake was a political truce made on 9 March 2018 between the then Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta and former Kenyan Prime Minister, Raila Odinga. The two had been the leaders of opposing political factions amidst widespread political violence and civil unrest and had previously faced one another in the contested 2017 Kenyan general election. Under the agreement, both figures ended their political feud. The two did this on an agreement that Uhuru Kenyatta would support Raila Odinga in the coming elections to become president. Consequently, the Azimio coalition was formed, Uhuru became the chairman, and Raila Odinga became the presidential candidate with Martha Karua as the running mate. They lost to President William Ruto, who was then Kenyatta's deputy. They petitioned William Ruto's victory in the Supreme Court, and chief justice Martha Koome dismissed it as a wild goose chase, and referred to some of the evidence as hot air. Today the handshake brothers are still seen together demonstrating and picketing in the streets of Nairobi and Kisumu demanding the opening of IEBC election servers, where they claim their 8 August victory is.
