Tunde Babalola is a Nigerian screenwriter in Nigerian cinema and British television. [1] He is most notable for writing movies such as Last Flight to Abuja , Critical Assignment , October 1 and Citation , [2] as well as the Nigerian soap-opera Tinsel and UK series The Bill and In Exile . He also acted in the 2001 movie Deep Freeze , however it is not a career path he says he intends to pursue. [3]

Personal life

He was born and grew up in England. Later, he moved to Nigeria with his parents and siblings. His father was an accountant and his mother worked in the Central Bank. Under the guidance of his uncle, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Nigerian Army, Babalola forced to apply to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). However, his mother did not give him permission. Therefore, he gained admission to study Dramatic Arts at the Obafemi Awolowo University. [4]

Career

At the age of 14, he wrote his first film script In The Raw. After he returned to the United Kingdom, he joined with Channel 4 and wrote the play for sitcom series called In Exile. He later worked with several channels: BBC, Carlton Television and Chrysalis Television. [4]

Babalola started as a writer with the TV serial The Bill. After the serial received fan popularity, he wrote the three TV serials in 1997: True to Life Player, Crime of a Lesser Passion and Armed and Dangerous. [5] In 1998, he wrote the serial One Man, Two Faces. Later in 2002, he made maiden cinema appearance as an actor with the horror film Deep Freeze. He played the role as a helicopter pilot. [4]

In 2014, he wrote the script of critically acclaimed blockbuster 1 October, where he took four weeks to write the first draft of the film and three drafts only took about a week to complete. The script was initially submitted with the title Dust, [6] mainly because the story is set in a very dusty town. Even though Afolayan didn't want to do big budget projects at the time, he knew he had no choice, as he wanted to interpret the writer's vision adequately because it is a "national film with a universal appeal". He expressed that he liked the story of 1 October because it is a period piece, which he had never done before and "it is also significant to the present state of Nigeria". As a result, he decided to explore the film by adding his own ideas to the subsequent drafts of the script. [7]

In 2015, he joined as the writer and producer of the comedy TV production Rib Busters: Comedy Show. [8] In 2015, Babalola won the awards for the Best Comedy Writer for the film The meeting and Best Drama Writer for the film 1 October at Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. [9]

Mokalik is a 2019 Nigerian bilingual comedy drama film produced and directed by veteran filmmaker Kunle Afolayan. The film stars newcomer Toni Afolayan in the male lead role along with Femi Adebayo. The film had its theatrical release on 31 May 2019 and received extremely positive reviews from critics while also performing well at the box office. It was acquired by Netflix in July 2019 and was streamed on 1 September 2019. The film has been included as a part of "Made in Africa" collection in May 2020 by Netflix to be streamed amid the global COVID-19 pandemic. The film was also nominated for the Best Film category during the 2019 Durban International Film Festival. The film was also premiered in several film festivals.

<i>Ayinla</i> (film) 2021 Nigerian movie by Tunde Kelani

Ayinla is a musical eponymous film based on the life of Ayinla Yusuf popularly known as Ayinla Omowura, an Apala musician who was stabbed to death by his manager named Bayewu in a bar fight on 6 May 1980 at Abeokuta. The film premiered on 13 June 2021 in Lagos and was released to theatres on 18 June 2021. Directed by Tunde Kelani, the film was set in the 1970s and early 1980s and shot in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Lateef Adedimeji assumed the role of Ayinla, starring alongside Omowumi Dada, Bimbo Manuel, Ade Laoye, Kunle Afolayan, Bimbo Ademoye and Mr Macaroni. Tenants of the House is a 2019 Nollywood film written by Tunde Babalola, produced by Dr. Wale Okediran and directed by Kunle Afolayan under the sponsorship of Ford Foundation, Premero Consulting Ltd, Bank of Industry, and National Livestock Transformation Plan. The movie was based on Wale Okediran fictional novel written in 2009 and it mostly focused on political conspiracies, girl child education and betrayals.

Ijogbon is a 2023 coming-of-age adventure film produced by Kunle Afolayan and distributed by Netflix. It is part of the three movies agreement signed by Kunle Afolayan with Netflix. The film was written by Tunde Babalola and was released to Netflix on 13th, October 2023. The movie stars Gabriel Afolayan, Adunni Ade, Ex BBNaija star, Dorathy Bachor, Sam Dede, Femi Branch, Yemi Sodimu, Bimbo Manuel, Yemi Solade and a host of others. The film was shot in Oyo State, in the KAP Film Village and Resort.
