Tuqaq [lower-alpha 1] is described as the father of Seljuq, the founder of the eponymous dynasty, in the Maliknamah tradition.

Maliknamah

The Maliknamah, which was drafted during the reign of Tuqaq's great-great-grand-son Alp Arslan (r. 1063-1072) from oral lores, was perhaps the only significant text to document the earliest history of Seljuqs and Tuqaq, in particular. [1] The relevant information was obtained from Amir Inanj Beg, a clan-elder with extensive knowledge of genealogies. [2] Though Maliknamah is not extant, extracts concerning our subject survive in a few works — al-Kāmil fit-Tārīkh by Ibn al-Athir [1231 CE], Aḵbār al-Dawlat al-Saljūqīya by Ibn Husayni [early 13th c], Chronicon Syriacum by Bar Hebraeus [mid 13th c.], and Rawżat aṣ-ṣafāʾ by Mirkhvand [late 15th c.] [3] [lower-alpha 2] Besides, Ibn al-Adim's Bughyat al-Talab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab quotes Beg directly and was likely derived from Maliknamah. [2]

Saljuq-nama

Saljuq-nama — dedicated to Toghrul III — drafted in 1175, note Seljuq to be the son of Luqman; neither is Tuqaq mentioned nor is any detail provided about Luqman. [4] The many histories that derive from the Saljuq-nama reproduce the genealogy. Some historians assert Luqman to be a misreading of Tuqaq; however, it might be that its author Zahir al-Din Nishapuri had intended to allude to the eponymous Koranic sage than any historical persona. [5]

Others

Ibn Hassul — who served as the secretary of Tughril (r. 1037 - 1063) and whose epistle pre-dated the Maliknamah — discusses early Seljuqid history but does not mention Tuqaq; [lower-alpha 3] however, he ascribes the conflict alluded to Tuqaq in Maliknama, with most of its details, to Seljuq. [6] [7] Jirjis al-Makin Ibn al-'Amid's al-Majmu` al-Mubarak described Tuqaq in the context of early Seljuqid history but does not cite any source. [8]

Ethno-political affiliations

The Seljuqs (and thus, Tuqaq) are traditionally traced to the Qiniq sub-tribe of the Oghuz Turks. [9] [lower-alpha 4] However, the Maliknama tradition describes Tuqaq as a Khazar Turk; whether this is a faithful depiction of historical reality or an attempt by the Seljuqs to cast links with the illustrious Khazar Empire remains debatable. [12] Clifford Edmund Bosworth leans in favor of the latter while A. C. S. Peacock leans against, arguing that the empire carried little prestige in the Arabic world to warrant the production of fabricated connections in the eleventh century. [13]

Biography

Mirkhvand quotes from the Maliknamah in the fullest extent: Tuqaq was the Chief Counsel of "the King (Yabghu) of Khazars". [14] He carried the sobriquet Temuryaligh (lit. Iron Bow), [lower-alpha 5] and was the father of Seljuq. [14] Tuqaq gained repute among the local nobility, mostly composed of Turks, after objecting to the Yabghu's decision to raid other innocent Turk tribes; even after assaulting the Yabghu with a mace and toppling him from his horse in the course of his dissent, he escaped from being punished since the nobles did not consent to have him killed. [14] Tuqaq and the Yabghu buried their differences soon; he would die, years later, while accompanying the Yabghu in a military mission.

Hebraeus name-drops Tuqaq as Seljuq's father; he is simply noted to have been an excellent warrior in service of the Khakans of Khazar. [2] al-Adim notes Beg to have held Tuqaq as the father of Seljuq, and a noble of the Khajar Turks. [2] Accounts by Ibn Husayni as well as al-Athir not only mention Tuqaq as Seljuq's father but also describe the conflict, though altering key details. [16] [lower-alpha 6] In their account, Amir Tuqaq had objected to the Yabghu of Turks raiding Islamic lands. [16] [17] Also, after the faceoff, the court nobles played no significant role and did not come in the aid of Tuqaq. [18] [19] [lower-alpha 7] It is likely that both Husayni and al-Athir were sourcing from a variant edition of the Maliknamah, that was perhaps circulated by the Seljuqs themselves, to embed themselves within a framework of Islamic piety. [20]

Legacy

After his death, Seljuq became a subashy before breaking away to form a polity of his own. [12]

Abu Suleiman Dawud Chaghri Beg ibn Mikail, widely known simply as Chaghri Beg (989–1060), Da'ud b. Mika'il b. Saljuq, also spelled Chaghri, was the co-ruler of the early Seljuk Empire. The name Chaghri is Turkic and literally means "small falcon", "merlin".

The Saljūq-Nāma is a history of the Great Seljuk Empire written by the Persian historian Zahir al-Din Nishapuri around 1175. Written in Persian, it has been acknowledged as the primary source for Saljuq material for Persian works dating from 13th century to 15th century, which include; Rahat al-sudur, Jami al-tawarikh, Tarikh-i Guzida, Zubdat al-Tawarikh and Rawdat as-Safa. Abu l'Qasim Qashani, a historian who wrote about the Ilkhanids, made alterations and additions to the original text, which was later misidentified as the original Saljuq-nama.

The Rahat al-sudur wa-ayat al-surur or Rahat al-sudur, is a history of the Great Seljuq Empire, its breakup into minor beys and the subsequent Khwarazmian occupation, written by the Persian historian Muhammad bin Ali Rawandi and finished around 1204/1205. Rawandi was encouraged and supported in his endeavour by Shihab al-Din al-Kashani. Written in Persian and originally dedicated to Süleymanshah II, Rawandi re-dedicated his work to the Sultan of Rum, Kaykhusraw I.

Muhammad ibn Ali Rawandi, was a Persian historian who wrote the Rahat al-sudur wa ayat al-surur during the fall of the Great Seljuk Empire and the subsequent invasion by the Kharwarzmian empire.

Farrukh-Zad, was sultan of the Ghaznavid Empire from. His reign was considered one of benevolence, prosperity and tranquility for the Ghaznavid empire. It was free of the chaotic turbulence and greed from palace ghulams until the end of his reign. He was a very devout Muslim and fasted during Rajab, Sha'ban and Ramadan.

Mughith al-Dunya wa'l-Din Malik-Shah bin Mahmud known as Malik-Shah III ruled as Sultan of Great Seljuq from 1152–53. He was the son of Mahmud II of Great Seljuq. In 1153, he was deposed and was succeeded by his brother, Muhammad. Following his death in 1160, his son Mahmud was held in Istakhr by the Salghurids as a rival claimant to the Seljuq throne.

Muhammad II ibn Mahmud was Sultan of Seljuq Empire from 1153 to 1159. He was son of Mahmud II and brother of Malik-Shah III. The Cambridge History of Iran notes that Sultan Muhammad "tried energetically to restore the slipping authority of his dynasty in Iraq".

Mu'izz al-Dunya wa'l-Din Abu'l-Harith Suleiman-Shah bin Muhammad, was sultan of the Seljuq Empire from 1159 to 1160.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kerman Seljuk Sultanate</span> Seljuk Sultanate in Kerman and Makran

The Kerman Seljuk Sultanate was a Turco-Persian society Sunni Muslim state, established in the parts of Kerman and Makran which had been conquered from the Buyid dynasty by the Seljuk Empire which was established by the Seljuk dynasty, which was of Oghuz Turkic origin. The Founder of this dynasty, Emadeddin Kara Arslan Ahmad Qavurt who succeeded the ruler of this dynasty after the surrender of the ruler of Buyyids, Abu Kalijar Marzuban. Fakhr al-Mulk was a Persian bureaucrat, who served as the vizier of the Seljuk sultan Berkyaruq from 1095 to 1099, and later vizier of the Sejluk prince and ruler of Khurasan, Ahmad Sanjar, from 1101 to 1106. He was the eldest son of the prominent Seljuk vizier Nizam al-Mulk.

The battle of Ain Salm was a battle between the forces of Tutush, the Seljuk ruler of Syria and brother of the Seljuk sultan Malik Shah, and Suleiman ibn Qutalmish, the Seljuk ruler of Anatolia in June 1086 close to the city of Aleppo.
