Turkey sent 15 athletes, among them 8 women, to the 2006 European Athletics Championships held between August 7 and August 13, 2006 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The only medal winner was Elvan Abeylegesse who won a bronze medal.
The 19th European Athletics Championships were held in Gothenburg, Sweden, between 7 August and 13 August 2006. The competition arena was the Ullevi Stadium and the official motto "Catch the Spirit". Gothenburg also hosted the 1995 World Championships in Athletics, and Stockholm, Sweden's capital, hosted 1958 European Athletics Championships.
Gothenburg is the second-largest city in Sweden, fifth-largest in the Nordic countries, and capital of the Västra Götaland County. It is situated by Kattegat, on the west coast of Sweden, and has a population of approximately 570,000 in the city center and about 1 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area.

Selahattin Çobanoğlu is a Turkish sprinter and middle distance runner. He usually competed at the 800 metres events.
Halil Akkaş is a Turkish middle-distance runner who won the 3000 m steeplechase at the 2005 World Student Games. He finished fourth in the 5000 m final at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. At the 2007 European Athletics Indoor Championships he competed in 3000 m and finished fourth. He also finished fourth in the 1500 m final at the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Moscow and sixth in the 3000 m steeplechase at the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Osaka.
Recep Çelik is a Turkish racewalker. The 177 cm (5.81 ft) tall athlete weighs 60 kg (130 lb), and is a member of the İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyespor, where he is coached by Nikolai Radionov. He graduated 2004 in physical education and sports from the Vocational College of Aksaray at Niğde University before he studied Regional Public Administration at Anadolu University.

Elvan Abeylegesse, is an Ethiopian-born Turkish middle and long-distance running athlete who competes over distances from 1500 metres up to the marathon, and also in cross country. She is the former world record-holder for the 5000 metres, at 14:24.68 minutes.
Türkan Erişmiş, aka Türkan Bozkurt, Türkan Bozkurt Erişmiş or Türkan Özata-Erişmiş, is a Turkish female middle distance runner competing mostly in the 3000 m steeplechase and cross country running events. The 170 cm tall athlete at 52 kg (115 lb) graduated from Niğde University, and works now as a teacher of physical education.
The women's 5000 metres at the 2004 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program were held at the Athens Olympic Stadium on August 20 and 23.

The 2001 European Athletics Junior Championships was an athletics competition for athletes under-20 which was held at the Stadio Olimpico Carlo Zecchini in Grosseto, Italy from 19 – 22 July 2001. A total of 44 events were contested, 22 by male and 22 by female athletes. Two new events were introduced into the programme: the women's 2000 metres steeplechase and the women's 10,000 m track walk. Five new championships records were recorded over the four-day competition, in addition to the two marks set in the newly introduced events.
