The term usually refers to loggers in the era when trees were felled using hand tools and dragged by oxen to rivers. The work was difficult, dangerous, intermittent, low-paying, and involved living in primitive conditions. However, the men built a traditional culture that celebrated strength, masculinity, confrontation with danger, and resistance to modernization.

John Tyler was the tenth president of the United States, holding office from 1841 to 1845 after briefly serving as the tenth vice president in 1841; he was elected vice president on the 1840 Whig ticket with President William Henry Harrison. Tyler succeeded to the presidency after Harrison's death in April 1841, only a month after the start of the new administration. He was a stalwart supporter and advocate of states' rights, and he adopted nationalistic policies as president only when they did not infringe on the powers of the states. His unexpected rise to the presidency posed a threat to the presidential ambitions of Henry Clay and other politicians, and left Tyler estranged from both major political parties.
John L. Martin is an American politician of the Democratic Party. Martin has been in Maine politics since his first election to the Maine House of Representatives in 1964, and is sometimes called "The Earl of Eagle Lake" as a result. With his election in 2014, he is the longest serving legislator in Maine history.
Justin Loring Alfond is an American politician and real estate developer. He served as a Democratic State Senator from the 8th District, which represents much of Portland. Alfond was first elected to the State Senate in 2008 to replace Democrat Ethan Strimling; he beat former State Senator Anne Rand and Cliff Ginn. He was re-elected in 2010 and 2012. In 2012, he faced Green Independent Party Chair Asher Platts. Alfond won with 71% of the vote in a two-way race.
Paul Richard LePage is an American businessman and politician who was the 74th Governor of Maine, from 2011 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party, LePage served two terms as a city councilor in Waterville, Maine, before being elected Mayor of Waterville in 2004, serving until 2011.
Mark W. Lawrence is an American lawyer and politician from Maine. He was born in Kittery, Maine. A Democrat, Lawrence served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1988 to 2000, first elected while still in law school. After two terms in the House, he was elected to the Maine Senate in 1992. He was elected as the President of the 118th Maine Senate in December 1996 and then elected as President of the 119th Maine Senate in December 1998, serving in that capacity until 2000. He challenged Republican incumbent Olympia Snowe in the 2000 U.S. Senate election and lost. He lost in the Democratic primary for the open seat in the 1st congressional district in 2008. He served from 2003 to 2010 as the York County District Attorney and did not seek re-election in 2010. He returned to private practice in South Berwick, Maine. In November 2016, he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives, and after a single term back in the House he returned to the Senate after the 2018 election.
Troy Dale Jackson is an American politician from Allagash, Maine. Jackson serves in the Maine Senate from District 1, representing northern Aroostook County, including the towns of Fort Kent, Madawaska and Caribou. On December 5, 2018, Jackson was unanimously elected President of the Maine Senate. On December 2, 2020, Jackson was re-elected to that position.
Alexander Reginald Willette is an American politician from Maine. In 2010, the Republican Willette was elected to represent District 7 in the Maine House of Representatives, covering much of central Aroostook County including part of the city of Presque Isle. He served as the Assistant Republican Leader, and, during his time in the Legislature, was both the youngest member of legislative leadership in Maine's history and the youngest in the United States.
Richard M. Cebra is an American politician from Maine. A Republican, he represented Maine House of Representatives District 101, which included Casco, Naples and part of Poland from 2004 to 2012. He was elected to the 128th Legislature in November 2016 serving district House District 68, which includes the towns of Naples, Sebago, Baldwin, Cornish and part of Parsonfield. Following his initial departure from the legislature in 2012, he served as chairman of the Maine Republican Party, from which he stepped down in 2013. Cebra is known as a social and fiscal conservative, and was a close ally of Governor Paul LePage.

Kimberley Clark Rosen is an American politician from Maine. A Republican, Rosen represented the towns of Orrington and her residence in Bucksport in the Maine House of Representatives from 2004 to 2012, when she was unable to run for re-election due to term-limits. She married to former State Senator Richard Rosen, whom she replaced as State Representative. Either Richard or Kimberley Rosen represented Bucksport and Orrington from 1998 to 2004.
John F. Ward was an American politician from Maine. A Republican from Millinocket, Maine, Ward served three terms in the Maine House of Representatives (1942–1948) and three terms in the Maine Senate (1948–1954). He served two terms in the leadership of the Maine House, including as Majority Leader (1944–1946) and as Speaker (1946–1948). During Ward's final term in the Maine Senate, he served as president during the 1954 special session.
