The Royal Navy's Type 901 X-band radar [1] was used as the beam-riding command guidance system for the Seaslug missile system, which was the first such system used by the Royal Navy. Designed by the Admiralty Surface Radar Establishment at Portsdown, the project was passed to Marconi Systems for manufacture.
The Type 901 radar was initially intended as the tracking system for the Long Range System 1 (LRS1) anti-aircraft system. LRS1 was a complete fire control system including the 901, plotting systems and ballistic computers that were intended to allow existing dual-purpose high-angle guns to perform effective anti-aircraft fire at much longer ranges than was possible during WWII. As the LOPGAP programme began to focus on the Seaslug design, the 901 was re-purposed to provide aiming guidance for the missile. [2] The anti-aircraft requirement was dropped in 1949, along with the LRS1 concept, and development continued for Seaslug. [3]
The single unit produced three co-axial beams; a high powered (600 kW) [4] target tracking beam, a lower powered (50 kW) guidance beam for the missile, and a wider gathering beam.
Originally the antennas were mounted in front of two parabolic reflectors, one with a relatively wide beam for the gathering radar, and another with a narrower pattern for tracking. These were mounted on a modified wartime pom-pom mounting. Eventually, this was replaced by a design with the tracking and guidance beams being focused through a large dielectric lens instead of a reflector, and a much smaller parabolic reflector for the gathering beam placed on the right-hand side of the lens. The Type 901 radar's tracking antenna could be set to one of 8 frequency bands within the range 9.1 GHz to 9.8 GHz, [6] the guidance and gathering antennae shared a separate frequency, around 0.1 GHz lower [7]
Target acquisition was manual, with one crewman searching in elevation and azimuth, and on finding the target a second crewman found the range; at this stage the system was locked onto the target and would continue to track it. This process took 20 – 30 seconds [8]
The target-tracking and guidance beams produced were incredibly fine, being measured at 0.8° wide at 6 dB down, [9] this enabled the tracking radar to discriminate between targets as close as 20 minutes of arc or a range separation of 75 yards. [10] Once properly gathered the missile typically remained within 35 feet of the centre of the beam [11] for the duration of the engagement.
The achieved power "was no mean feat, but undoubtedly the greatest advance made in this radar was the ultimate achievement of a tracking accuracy giving an rms aiming error of only 20 arc-seconds -the equivalent of 2·5 yards at a range of 25,000 yards (12·5 miles). And this from a 4-axis-stabilised aerial with transmitter and receiver weighing some 12 tons in a ship that rolls, pitches and heaves." [12]

The upgraded radar associated with the Seaslug Mk2 system featured a Constant Wave (CW) tracking radar, and the discrimination was improved to 18 minutes of arc. It also featured a number of automatic scanning patterns for target acquisition [13]

The name refers to the fact that the missile itself is only a passive detector of a radar signal—provided by an external ("offboard") source—as it reflects off the target. Semi-active missile systems use bistatic continuous-wave radar.

The County class was a class of British guided missile destroyers, the first such warships built by the Royal Navy. Designed specifically around the Seaslug anti-aircraft missile system, the primary role of these ships was area air defence around the aircraft carrier task force in the nuclear-war environment.
Sea Dart, or GWS.30 was a Royal Navy surface-to-air missile system designed in the 1960s and entering service in 1973. It was fitted to the Type 42 destroyers, Type 82 destroyer and Invincible-class aircraft carriers of the Royal Navy. Originally developed by Hawker Siddeley, the missile was built by British Aerospace after 1977. It was withdrawn from service in 2012.
Seaslug was a first-generation surface-to-air missile designed by Armstrong Whitworth for use by the Royal Navy. Tracing its history as far back as 1943's LOPGAP design, it came into operational service in 1961 and was still in use at the time of the Falklands War in 1982.
Beam-riding, also known as Line-Of-Sight Beam Riding (LOSBR), beam guidance or radar beam riding is a technique of directing a missile to its target by means of radar or a laser beam. The name refers to the way the missile flies down the guidance beam, which is aimed at the target. It is one of the simplest guidance systems and was widely used on early missile systems, however it had a number of disadvantages for long-range targeting and is now found typically only in short-range roles.
Command guidance is a type of missile guidance in which a ground station or aircraft relay signals to a guided missile via radio control or through a wire connecting the missile to the launcher and tell the missile where to steer to intercept its target. This control may also command the missile to detonate, even if the missile has a fuze.
The Raytheon MIM-23 HAWK is an American medium-range surface-to-air missile. It was designed to be a much more mobile counterpart to the MIM-14 Nike Hercules, trading off range and altitude capability for a much smaller size and weight. Its low-level performance was greatly improved over Nike through the adoption of new radars and a continuous wave semi-active radar homing guidance system. It entered service with the US Army in 1959.
Rajendra is a passive electronically scanned array radar developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is a multifunction radar, capable of surveillance, tracking and engaging low radar cross section targets. It is a ground surveillance radar and is a great source of surveillance operating at frequency around 20 GHz. It is mainly used to track enemy's installations.
The English Electric Thunderbird was a British surface-to-air missile produced for the British Army. Thunderbird was primarily intended to attack higher altitude targets at ranges up to approximately 30 miles (48 km), providing wide-area air defence for the Army in the field. Anti-aircraft guns were still used for lower altitude threats. Thunderbird entered service in 1959 and underwent a major mid-life upgrade to Thunderbird 2 in 1966, before being slowly phased out by 1977. Ex-Army Thunderbirds were also operated by the Royal Saudi Air Force after 1967.
The AN/SPG-55 was an American tracking / illumination radar for Terrier and RIM-67 Standard missiles (SM-1ER/SM-2ER). It was used for target tracking and surface-to-air missile guidance as part of the Mk 76 missile fire control system. It was controlled by a UNIVAC 1218 computer.
The AA.20 was a French air-to-air missile, developed by Nord Aviation, and was one of the first of such missiles adopted into service in Western Europe. Production began at Chatillon, France in 1956. Approximately 6,000 missiles of the type were produced, remaining in service until 1960.
The RSA is one of the earliest surface-to-air missiles systems, developed by the Swiss companies Oerlikon-Bührle and Contraves starting in 1947. The missile went through a rapid development process with several upgraded versions, and was the first anti-aircraft missile offered for commercial sale when it was placed on the market in the RSC-50 form. The US tested 25 of the slightly different RSC-51 model under the name MX-1868. No further sales were forthcoming. Several improved versions followed, including the RSC-54, RSC-56, RSC-57 and RSC/RSD-58. These saw small numbers of sales, mostly as training rounds.
In the field of weaponry, terminal guidance refers to any guidance system that is primarily or solely active during the "terminal phase", just before the weapon impacts its target. The term is generally used in reference to missile guidance systems, and specifically to missiles that use more than one guidance system through the missile's flight.
The Clausen Rolling Platform was a missile launching platform, built at the coastal missile test range of RAE Aberporth, West Wales, in the 1950s. It used a floating platform in a pool of water to simulate the rolling of a ship at sea, without the drawbacks and costs of going to sea. The Platform was first used for development trials of the Seaslug missile.
HMS Girdle Ness was a Beachy Head-class repair ship constructed for the Royal Navy that entered service in 1945. Originally named Penlee Point, the vessel was designed as a maintenance ship for landing craft in the Pacific Theatre of World War II but used as an accommodation ship at Rosyth Dockyard. Renamed Girdle Ness, the ship was taken out of service in 1953 and converted for use in support of missile trials in the development of the Seaslug missile in the early 1960s. After trials of the missile were completed, Girdle Ness was placed in reserve before becoming an accommodation ship as part of the shore establishment HMS Cochrane at Rosyth. The vessel was stricken in 1970.
The AN/SPG-62 is a continuous wave fire-control radar developed by the United States, and it is currently deployed on warships equipped with the Aegis Combat System. It provides terminal target illumination for the semi-active SM-2MR/ER and ESSM Block 1 surface-to-air missiles. It also provides illumination for the active SM-6 if it is used in semi-active mode. The antenna is mechanically steered, uses a parabolic reflector, and operates at 8 to 12 GHz. The system is a component of the Mk 99 fire-control system (FCS).
