UAW Local 4811 is the local union of United Auto Workers representing academic student employees, graduate student researchers, postdoctoral scholars, and academic researchers at 10 campuses of the University of California system and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, with the exception of the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco. [1]
In the early 1980s, graduate student workers at the University of California, Berkeley began to organize a labor union known as Association of Graduate Student Employees (AGSE). In 1984, AGSE ally California state assemblymember Tom Bates introduced Assembly Bill 3251 into that year's session, which would have extended collective bargaining rights to graduate student employees, who were classified as apprentices rather than workers. At the same time, 1,300 AGSE members struck to pressure the university to recognize their union. This bill failed in May of that year, but this event officially inaugurated the precursor to the current graduate student union at the UC. [2] In 1987, AGSE affiliated with the UAW, however Teaching Assistants would not be recognized as employees by the state of California until 1999, following a series of high participation strikes the year prior. [3] UAW 2865 was officially formed in 2000, representing 8,000 Teaching Assistants, when members ratified its first contract which codified a wage of $13,500/yr, on average. This contract excluded Graduate Student Researchers, who remained categorized as apprentices until 2017. [4] [5]
After several years of coordination, in 2022 UAW Local 2865, UAW Local 5810, and the graduate student researcher organizing campaign, SRU-UAW, struck together for six weeks beginning on November 14. The 5810 represented postdoctoral scholar and academic researcher units reached tentative agreements with the university on November 29, which were ratified by membership vote on December 9. The student worker units reached tentative agreements on December 16, which were ratified by membership vote on December 23—ending the strike. [6] This strike was the largest higher education strike in United States history. [7]
After the ratification of the contracts won in 2022, the joint councils of UAW 2865 and SRU-UAW voted to merge the new graduate student researcher bargaining units into the existing UAW 2865 academic student employee units—forming one union of 36,000 academic student workers. [8]
Following the SRU merger and coordination between both unions in their 2022 strike, from October 10–20, 2023 UAW locals 5810 and 2865 put an amalgamation referendum to members, weighing whether to combine the two unions. [9] Over 11,000 workers participated in the vote, with 92% in favor of amalgamation. [10] The UAW International Executive Board approved the amalgamation in late February 2024, officially combining the two unions into one comprising 48,000 workers and numerated Local 4811. [1]
Soon after amalgamation, UAW Local 4811 was called upon to respond and support action by UC student protestors, including students leading the Students for Justice in Palestine protests and encampments at UC campuses. After the violent attack by non-campus individuals on pro-Palestine student protestors at UCLA and the subsequent police crackdown on May 1 and 2, 2024, UAW Local 4811 issued a statement announcing that it would hold a strike authorization vote in the following week. [11] The union, in its statement, also called for UCLA Chancellor Gene Block to resign immediately given what they called his "failure of leadership." [12] The 2024 strike took place over the course of three weeks starting on May 20, 2024, each of which saw new campuses join—following the "stand up" strategy of the 2023 United Auto Workers strike. [13] The strike ended on June 7, 2024 after the university circumvented the California Public Relations Board by forum shopping for a temporary restraining order against the strike in Orange County Superior Court. [14]
The United Auto Workers (UAW), fully named International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, is an American labor union that represents workers in the United States and southern Ontario, Canada. It was founded as part of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in the 1930s and grew rapidly from 1936 to the 1950s. The union played a major role in the liberal wing of the Democratic Party under the leadership of Walter Reuther. It was known for gaining high wages and pensions for automotive manufacturing workers, but it was unable to unionize auto plants built by foreign-based car makers in the South after the 1970s, and it went into a steady decline in membership; reasons for this included increased automation, decreased use of labor, mismanagement, movements of manufacturing, and increased globalization. After a successful strike at the Big Three in 2023, the union organized its first foreign plant (VW) in 2024.
Local 33–UNITE HERE, formerly the Graduate Employees and Students Organization, is a union of graduate student teachers and researchers at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Local 33 is affiliated with the international union UNITE HERE, which also represents Yale University's service, maintenance, clerical, and technical workers. After more than three decades of organizing, Yale graduate workers submitted over 3,000 signed union authorization cards to the Hartford, Connecticut, office of the National Labor Relations Board, or NLRB, representing the greatest number of graduate workers who have ever supported unionizing. On January 9, 2023, Yale graduate workers won their union, with 1,860 members voting in favor and 179 voting against, a 10.4 to 1 ratio in favor of unionization. The proposed worker bargaining unit of about 4,000 graduate and professional school workers was the second largest election filing in the country in 2022.

Graduate student employee unionization, or academic student employee unionization, refers to labor unions that represent students who are employed by their college or university to teach classes, conduct research and perform clerical duties. As of 2014, there were at least 33 US graduate employee unions, 18 unrecognized unions in the United States, and 23 graduate employee unions in Canada. By 2019, it is estimated that there were 83,050 unionized student employees in certified bargaining units in the United States. As of 2023, there were at least 156 US graduate student employee unions and 23 graduate student employee unions in Canada.

UAW Local 5810 was the labor union representing postdoctoral researchers and academic researchers at the University of California. It is an affiliate of the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) or AFL–CIO. It was merged into UAW Local 4811 in March 2024 when the UAW International Executive Board voted to approve the amalgamation of academic student employees, graduate student researchers and academic researchers and postdoctoral workers into UAW Local 4811. UAW Local 5810 was chartered in 2008. The stand-alone postdoctoral scholar contract and academic researcher contract negotiated between UC and UAW are notable for being the first of their kind in the United States, respectively.
The UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) is an interdisciplinary research unit within the College of Letters & Science, Division of Social Science, dedicated to research, teaching, and discussion of labor and employment issues. It was founded in 1945 as the UCLA Institute of Industrial Relations. It is part of a network of research programs in the University of California system including the UC Berkeley Institute for Research on Labor and Employment, the UC Merced Community and Labor Center, and research units on six other campuses. The IRLE is home to the UCLA Labor Center, the Labor Occupational Safety and Health Program (LOSH), the Human Resources Round Table, and other research programs. The IRLE also supports the UCLA Labor Studies undergraduate program.
Postdoctoral researcher unionization is the formation of labor unions by postdoctoral researchers (postdocs). It has been driven by increasing competition for scarce tenure-track faculty positions, leading to more people residing in postdoctoral positions for a longer time. Unions often challenge the low pay, minimal benefits, and lack of job security that are typical of postdoctoral positions. Unionizing is however sometimes seen as creating a culture clash of tension between postdocs and their academic advisors, and some question the suitability of a union for a temporary position. Some universities seek to avoid pushes for unionization by proactively addressing the concerns of postdoctoral researchers.
The Harvard Graduate Students Union (HGSU), officially known as Harvard Graduate Students Union United Auto Workers (HGSU-UAW), is a labor union representing graduate students, teaching assistants, and other student employees at Harvard University. The bargaining unit comprises about 5,000 student employees, including graduate students working as research assistants and teaching fellows as well as several hundred undergraduate students holding teaching positions. Contract negotiations with the university are scheduled to begin in Fall 2018. HGSU is affiliated with the United Auto Workers labor union, whose 400,000 members include 45,000 graduate students and 30,000 academic workers.

Tesla, Inc. is an American electric car manufacturer which employs over 140,000 workers across its global operations as of January 2024, almost none of which are unionized. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has commented negatively on trade unions in relation to Tesla. Despite allegations of high injury rates, long hours, and below-industry pay, efforts to unionize the workforce have been largely unsuccessful. There are active labor disputes with Tesla in the United States, Germany and Sweden.
Student Researchers United-UAW (SRU-UAW) was a union organizing drive of student researchers at the University of California (UC). It was part of the United Auto Workers. The campaign was composed of more than 17,000 people who work across 10 UC campuses and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. They were the largest 2021 addition to the UAW, accounting for 0.1% of union members in the US, and, according to organizers, were "the largest academic student employee union in US history." The campaign joined UAW Local 2865 in 2023 and ceased to be an independent entity.
