The UK RumFest is a festival promoting rum and related alcoholic beverages in the United Kingdom. [1] The festival claims to be the largest exhibition of rum culture in the world. [2] [3]
The festival was founded by Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell in 2007, who was keen to promote rum as a drink. [4] [5] Burrell had worked in the drinks trade as a bartender since 1990. In 1998, he had started working with the Jamaican rum distiller, blender and bottler J. Wray and Nephew Ltd. [5] The company initially employed Burrell on a part-time basis, leading to a full-time role in 2003. Burrell subsequently work for other drinks brands on an ad hoc basis and with organisations such as the West Indies Rum & Spirits Producers Association, which represents several different Caribbean rums. [4] [5] The UK Rumfest has led to the influence of rum festivals and fairs all over the world including The Miami Rum Renaissance festival, the Puerto Rico Rum Festival "Taste of Rum", the Berlin Rumfest, MidWest Rum Fest, California Rum Fest, Paris Rhum fest and the first rum festival in Mauritius. Over the past eight years, the festival has seen a growth in exhibitors, [9] and provides areas for both the general public and specialist / trade customers. [2] [8] The festival showcases more than 400 rums produced by a variety of distilleries, [2] including Havana Club, Mount Gay and House of Angostura. [10] It also features a programme of rum focused workshops, seminars and classes. [11]
In October 2013, the UK RumFest also featured the Connoisseur’s Cove [8] [12] – an exclusive area of the exhibition reserved for specific attendees.
The organisers of the festival, The Rum Experience have started a Rum Experience University [13] which provides students with information about the rum trade. [13] [14] [15] It covers rum and its production and advertising. [13] [14]

In 1993, French-owned Pernod Ricard and the government of Cuba created a state-run 50:50 joint venture called Corporación Cuba Ron. They began exporting this version of Havana Club globally, except for the United States due to the embargo put in place by the U.S. government.

As of 2006 most distilled spirits labelled as "whisky" in India were a form of Indian-made foreign liquor, commonly blends based on neutral spirits that are distilled from fermented molasses with only a small portion consisting of traditional malt whisky, usually about 10 to 12 percent. Outside India, such a drink would more likely be labelled a rum. According to the Scotch Whisky Association's 2013 annual report, unlike in the European Union (EU), "there is no compulsory definition of whisky in India, and the Indian voluntary standard does not require whisky to be distilled from cereals or to be matured. Very little Indian 'whisky' qualifies as whisky in the EU owing to the use of molasses or neutral alcohol, limited maturation and the use of flavourings. Such spirits are, of course, considerably cheaper to produce than genuine whisky." Such molasses-based blends made up 90 percent of the spirits consumed as "whisky" in India in 2004, although whisky wholly distilled from malt and other grains, was also manufactured and sold. By 2004 shortages of wheat had been overcome and India was one of the largest producers. Amrut, the first single malt whisky produced in India, was launched in Glasgow, Scotland in 2004. After expanding in Europe it was launched in India in 2010.

They own three single malt whisky distilleries: Glengoyne distillery, Tamdhu distillery, and Rosebank distillery and one gin distillery: Edinburgh Gin. They also produce a number of other distilled spirits including Smokehead Islay whisky.
