The USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute, part of Keck School of Medicine of USC, is a center for ophthalmic care, research and education located in downtown Los Angeles, California. It has subsidiary clinics in Pasadena, Beverly Hills and Arcadia. [1] It was allied with the Doheny Eye Institute from 1975 until 2013, when Doheny allied with University of California Los Angeles.

History

Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC attained departmental status in 1974 and opened its first building on the USC Health Sciences Campus in 1975. Although an ophthalmology residency program existed at USC prior to that time, there were no full-time faculty members in the department. Stephen J. Ryan was recruited in 1974 and served as the department’s first professor and chairman through 1995. [2] In 1975, the Doheny Eye Institute [3] allied with USC's Ophthalmology department under Ryan and relocated to the USC campus. The alliance "provided Dr. Ryan the opportunity to recruit and build the institute’s department from the ground up. Thus began the transformation of the institute into one of the top university based ophthalmic teaching, clinical, and research centers....Dr. Ryan built Doheny into a respected institution. In 2011 alone, Doheny scientists received $21.8 million in federal and state grants and published more than 180 scientific papers." [4] All of the Doheny Eye Institute's doctors were appointed as USC faculty members. [5]

The Doheny Eye Institute built a new building on USC's campus in 1985 to provide clinical facilities for USC's ophthalmology faculty. [6]

In 2011, USC and the Doheny Eye Institute fell into a dispute over renovations, permits, and other matters related to the building, which led to litigation. [5]

In 2013, the Doheny Eye Institute ended its relationship with USC and entered into an exclusive, long-term affiliation with University of California Los Angeles [7] [8]

Ronald E. Smith served as department chairman from 1995 to 2013, [9] and left USC to follow Doheny, and became vice chair of the department at UCLA. [10]

Mark S. Humayun took over as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC in November 2013, and in February 2014, Rohit Varma was appointed director of the USC Eye Institute. [11]

In April 2016 it received a $25 million gift from Edward P. Roski and his wife, Gayle, and was renamed in their honor. [12]

Research

Members of the Institute have made contributions to vision research, some prior to arriving at USC such as two of the inventors of optical coherence tomography, Carmen A. Puliafito (as of 2007, Dean of the Keck School of Medicine) and David Huang, who did his residency at USC. [13] [14] [15]

Dr. Mark Humayun, who joined the faculty of the Keck School of Medicine of USC in 2001, [16] was a co-inventor of a retinal prosthesis [17] that became the basis for the formation of the company, Second Sight, in 1998. [18] : 35  Their first-generation implant had 16 electrodes and was implanted in 6 subjects by Humayun at University of Southern California between 2002 and 2004; [18] : 35  Humayan has participated in subsequent clinical trials as well. [19]

Ophthalmologist George Baerveldt, while he was at USC, developed the most commonly used glaucoma implant in the world, the Baerveldt glaucoma implant. [20]

In December 2013, David Hinton and Mark S. Humayun won a $19 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to conduct a clinical trial in which the use of embryonic stem cells to treat age-related macular degeneration will be tested. [21]

U.S. News & World Report

In 2014-15, USC Eye Institute and USC Department of Ophthalmology retained the No. 9 spot in the national rankings of “Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report . [22] The faculty of the USC Department of Ophthalmology has earned Top 10 recognition by the magazine for 20 years. [22] [23]

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. An ophthalmologist is a physician who specializes in eye care. Ophthalmologists typically provide specialty eye care - medical and surgical. Ophthalmologists may also participate in academic research for eye disorders.

Retinal prostheses for restoration of sight to patients blinded by retinal degeneration are being developed by a number of private companies and research institutions worldwide. The system is meant to partially restore useful vision to people who have lost their photoreceptors due to retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) or age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Three types of retinal implants are currently in clinical trials: epiretinal, subretinal, and suprachoroidal. Retinal implants introduce visual information into the retina by electrically stimulating the surviving retinal neurons. So far, elicited percepts had rather low resolution, and may be suitable for light perception and recognition of simple objects.

New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Hospital in New York, United States

New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) is located at East 14th Street and Second Avenue in lower Manhattan, New York City. Founded on August 14, 1820, NYEE is America's first specialty hospital and one of the most prominent in the fields of ophthalmology and otolaryngology in the world, providing primary inpatient and outpatient care in those specialties. Previously affiliated with New York Medical College, as of 2013 it is affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as a part of the membership in the Mount Sinai Health System.

Jules Stein Eye Institute Medical department at UCLA

The Jules Stein Eye Institute, founded by MCA founder Jules Stein, functions as the department of ophthalmology for the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

Scott E. Fraser American biophysicist

Scott E. Fraser is an American biophysicist and Provost Professor of Biological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). He is also the Elizabeth Garrett Chair in Convergent Bioscience and Director of Science Initiatives, where he is helping to launch USC’s Initiative in Convergent Bioscience. In addition, he holds joint appointments in the Departments of Physiology and Biophysics, Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Pediatrics, Radiology, and Ophthalmology.

A visual prosthesis, often referred to as a bionic eye, is an experimental visual device intended to restore functional vision in those suffering from partial or total blindness. Many devices have been developed, usually modeled on the cochlear implant or bionic ear devices, a type of neural prosthesis in use since the mid-1980s. The idea of using electrical current to provide sight dates back to the 18th century, discussed by Benjamin Franklin, Tiberius Cavallo, and Charles LeRoy.

Ron P. Gallemore is a registered ophthalmologist with the American Academy of Ophthalmology involved in research and treatment of diseases of the macula and retina.

Carmen Puliafito

Carmen Anthony Puliafito is an American ophthalmologist. From 2007 until March 2016, he was dean of the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, is a center for ophthalmic care, research, and education. Faculty and staff treat patients from around the world in facilities in Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Palm Beach County, and Collier County. The institute's full-time faculty and researchers encompass many ophthalmic sub-specialties and has been consistently ranked as the #1 eye hospital and vision research center in the country by US News & World Report.

Joel S. Schuman

Joel S. Schuman is an American ophthalmologist, specializing in glaucoma. In 2020 he was named Elaine Langone Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Ophthalmology at NYU Langone Medical Center, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, having served as Chairman of that Department and Director of the NYU Langone Eye Center 2016-2020. In 2016 he was also appointed Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and Professor of Neuroscience and Physiology and a member of the Neuroscience Institute, at NYU Langone Health, NYU Grossman School of Medicine. In 2017 he became Professor of Neural Science in the Center for Neural Science at NYU. In 2018 he was named Professor and core faculty in the newly formed Department of Biomedical Engineering at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. From 2003 - 2016 he was the Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at the Eye and Ear Institute, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the Eye and Ear Foundation Endowed Chair and Director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Eye Center. Berthold Seitz

Berthold Seitz is a German ophthalmologist, professor and director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Saarland University Medical Center in Homburg, Saarland. He is known for his scientific contributions in the fields of cornea transplantation, cataract surgery and artificial lens-calculation after refractive corneal surgery as well as techniques of amniotic membrane transplantation and its histological integration patterns in the cornea.

Mark S Humayun is a Pakistani-American ophthalmologist, engineer, scientist, inventor and academic – the only ophthalmologist elected a member of both U.S. National Academies of Medicine and Engineering. He is a university professor with joint appointments at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.

Doheny Eye Institute

Doheny Eye Institute established in 1947, is a nonprofit ophthalmic research institute. The doctors and scientists of Doheny Eye Institute undertake basic and clinical research, a role known as a physician-scientist.

Robert MacLaren

Robert E. MacLaren FMedSci FRCOphth FRCS FACS VR is a British ophthalmologist who has led pioneering work in the treatment of blindness caused by diseases of the retina. He is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford and Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. He is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital and an Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. He is also an Honorary Consultant Vitreo-retinal Surgeon at the Moorfields Eye Hospital. MacLaren is an NIHR Senior Investigator, or lead researcher, for the speciality of Ophthalmology. In addition, he is a member of the research committee of Euretina: the European Society of Retina specialists, Fellow of Merton College, in Oxford and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Atul Kumar (ophthalmologist)

Atul Kumar is an Indian ophthalmologist who is currently the Chief & Professor of Ophthalmology at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences (RPC-AIIMS), the national apex ophthalmic centre at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. He was awarded the Padma Shri award in January 2007 for his services to the medical field. He specializes in vitreoretinal surgery and also heads the Vitreo-Retinal, Uvea and ROP services at RPC-AIIMS.

James C. Tsai

James C. Tsai is a physician and scientist who serves as president of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. He also serves as the Delafield-Rodgers Professor of Ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai Health System.

Arthur W. Toga

Arthur W. Toga is an American neuroscientist and the director of the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) and the Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute within the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He is also the Ghada Irani Chair in Neuroscience and provost professor of ophthalmology, neurology, psychiatry and the behavioral sciences, radiology and engineering.

Steven J. Fliesler is an American biochemist and cell biologist, whose research has focused on how lipid metabolism supports the normal structure and function of the vertebrate retina. He currently is the Meyer H. Riwchun Endowed Chair Professor of Ophthalmology and Vice-Chair/Director of Research in the Department of Ophthalmology, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. In 2014, he became a UB Distinguished Professor, and in 2018 was promoted to the rank of SUNY Distinguished Professor. He is the author or coauthor of more than 150 publications, including peer-reviewed scientific/biomedical journal articles, books and book chapters.
