USS Kajeruna (SP-389) was a patrol vessel that served in the United States Navy from 1917 to 1919. The vessel had been built in 1902 as Hauoli for mining magnate Francis Marion "Borax" Smith but was replaced in 1903 by a second, larger vessel he named Hauoli. The first yacht was then named Seminole and for a time was returned to the builder, John N. Robins, and advertised for sale by the designer's firm. In 1911 Clinton W. Kinsella of New York purchased the yacht, apparently already renamed Kajeruna. After naval service the yacht was returned to the owner. On 31 March 1920 the ship was sold to British interests and renamed Tomas W. Beattie.
There were two yachts named Hauoli designed by Henry J. Gielow and built a year apart by Robins Dry Dock & Repair Company, Brooklyn, New York, for Smith. This leads to apparent discrepancies in specifications in contemporary reports regarding Hauoli. The registration's official number and code letters remain with the vessel through name and ownership changes. In this case even the official numbers are very close, differing in only a single digit: 96634 for the first and 96694 for the second.
The first yacht, found by Smith to be too small, was almost immediately replaced with a new larger yacht launched the summer after the first yacht. [1] This first Hauoli was later renamed Seminole, then Kajeruna. Ownership of this yacht after delivery of the new yacht was for a time with the builder, John N. Robins, with the designing firm offering it for sale during 1911 and 1912.
The second Hauoli, registered with US official number 96694 and code letters KSNM, was also designed by Henry J. Gielow and built for Smith by the Robins Dry Dock & Repair Company in 1903. [2] This yacht is shown with registered specifications of 299 GRT with a 211 ft (64.3 m) length overall, 22 ft 2 in (6.8 m) beam and 8 ft 8 in (2.6 m) draft and having four Almy boilers providing steam for a four-cylinder, triple expansion engine built by J. W. Sullivan of New York was taken in for Navy service in 1917 as USS California (SP-249). [2] [3] [4]
The steam yacht Hauoli was built in 1902 by Robins Dry Dock & Repair Company, Brooklyn, New York, for mining magnate Francis Marion "Borax" Smith. The yacht was launched 31 May 1902 at John N. Robbins' shipyard, Erie Basin, Brooklyn, New York with Miss Lulu Pfizer christening the vessel Hauoli as the Hawaiian word for "delight" in the presence of Mr. Smith's business manager and several hundred friends. [5] On registration Hauoli was assigned the official number 96634 with code letters KRTJ with home port being New York. [6]
Hauoli was designed by Henry J. Gielow and built under his direct supervision. The hull was divided into four water tight compartments and was double bottomed with those bottom spaces capable of either fresh water storage or water ballasting. [7] That yacht is described as being 147 GRT with a 147 ft 4 in (44.9 m) length overall, 14 ft 6 in (4.4 m) beam and 6 ft 8 in (2.0 m) draft. It had two twenty-two foot deck houses placed fore and aft of the machinery space that had funnel and ventilators visible between the houses and an open bridge above the forward deck house. [6] [7] It is described as having two boilers. [5] [7]
Two twenty-two foot in length deck houses were placed fore and aft of the machinery space that was topped by a single stack and ventilators. A dining saloon with a table seating for up to fourteen people occupied the forward portion of the forward deck house. The open navigating bridge was atop the deck house. A butler's pantry was fitted in the after portion and connected to the galley on the deck below by a dumb waiter. The aft deck house had a piano, large sofas on each side with a folding berth on the partition between the main space and a forward portion devoted to a dressing room and lavatory with toilet. That space could be entered from either the lounge or the deck. [7]
About a quarter of the way between the aft deck house and stern was the companionway giving access to the staterooms occupied by the owner and his wife that lay forward immediately aft the machinery space bulkhead. That steel bulkhead was double with asbestos insulation in the form of interior bulkheads with air space between to reduce noise to the owner's spaces. Between those and the companionway, going aft, lay a large stateroom and bath on the starboard side. Opposite those were two portside staterooms. Aft of the staterooms was the main saloon with direct access to the afterdeck by the companionway. Water storage tanks flanked the companionway. [7]
Forward of the owner's quarters and the aft deckhouse was the machinery space with the other habitable parts of the vessel forward of that space. Just forward was the galley occupying the full width of the yacht. A refrigerator and cold storage occupied the port side of the galley while with the food preparation area and dumb waiter were starboard and the large stove placed amidships at the aft bulkhead. Forward of the galley were staterooms flanking a short passageway for the yacht's captain on the starboard side and the engineer to the port side. Forward of those was berthing for a crew of ten with three bunk tiers to starboard and two to port. A toilet occupied space forward on the port side. Forward of the toilet and bunks was a two-person stateroom for the stewards. [7]
Lloyd's Register of American Yachts for 1905 — 6 shows the first Haouli as renamed Seminole and being owned by John N. Robins, the builder. [6] In an October 1911 advertisement by the designing firm, Gielow & Orr, the yacht is for sale as Hauoli. [8] Seminole is shown in registers as owned by Robins until the 30 June 1910 Annual List of Merchant Vessels of the United States when the vessel is shown as Kajeruna. [9] By June 1911 the register shows Kajeruna with Clinton W. Kinsella of New York as owner. [10] Some confusion about owner's names may be caused by news reports of F. E. Kinsella, possibly related, with a racing motorboat at the same time with the name Kajeruna. [11] By December 1916 the yacht had been purchased by Alfred W. Gieske of Baltimore and the yacht was then associated with the Baltimore Yacht Club. [12]
In May 1917, the US Navy acquired Kajeruna from her owner, A.W. Gieske of Baltimore, Maryland, under free lease for use as a patrol vessel during World War I. [3] [13] She was commissioned that month as USS Kajeruna (SP-389). [13]
Assigned to the 5th Naval District and based at Norfolk, Virginia, Kajeruna served as flagship of Patrol Squadron 3. [13] The vessel was one of eight assigned mine sweeping duties in the 5th District, routinely sweeping the designated channels for ship entry and egress. [14] She operated in Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay for the remainder of World War I. [13]
Kajeruna left active service soon after the war ended on 11 November 1918 and was returned her to her owner on 16 January 1919. [13] The report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1920 by the Commissioner of Navigation shows the vessel sold to British interests on 31 March 1920. [15] Later records show the ship was renamed Tomas W. Beattie classed as general cargo with an IMO number of 5364176. [16] [17] [note 1]
USS Hilo (AGP-2) was a converted yacht that saw service as a motor torpedo boat tender in the United States Navy during World War II. It was originally the yacht Caroline built for Eldridge R. Johnson and launched 18 July 1931. Caroline was at the time the second largest yacht and largest American built Diesel yacht. It was built with a laboratory as well as palatial quarters and was loaned and equipped by Johnson for the Johnson-Smithsonian Deep-Sea Expedition of 1933 that explored the Puerto Rico Trench. The yacht was sold in 1938 to William B. Leeds and renamed Moana replacing an earlier Leeds yacht of the same name.
The North 26 is a boat designed by Julian D Everitt, who also designed the E-boat, in Cowes, England in 1982. Big brother to the E-boat, the North 26 is intended to rate under IRC measurement rules for the English Channel for Yacht racing inshore and in Junior Offshore Group races. The North 26 has a wide, flat sole plate that enables it to sit in the mud in English ports with the keel retracted. This feature also enables safe beach sitting whilst cruising and use as a Trailer yacht.
USS Nokomis (SP-609) was a yacht purchased by the U.S. Navy during World War I. The yacht was purchased from Horace E. Dodge of Detroit, Michigan, after he had the yacht luxuriously fitted out but before he could make use of his second Nokomis — the first having already gone into service.
Idealia was America's first diesel powered yacht built and owned by the Electric Launch Company (ELCO). The yacht was built in 1911, launched in 1912 and demonstrated the potential for use of diesel engines in yachts for several years thereafter. She yacht performed a public trial on the Hudson River on 22 October 1913 under the supervision of ELCO's manager Henry R. Sutphen with a gathering of naval architects and engineers as observers. Idealia was sold to individual owners after its period of demonstrating the diesel engine's pleasure craft utility.
USS California (SP-249) was a yacht acquired by the United States Navy during World War I and outfitted as an armed section patrol vessel patrolling New York waterways. Later, renamed the original name of Hauoli, it was assigned to Thomas A. Edison conducting underwater listening experiments related to antisubmarine warfare.
USS Lydonia (SP-700) was United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1919 that saw service during World War I. Prior to her U.S. Navy service, she had been William A. Lydon's private yacht, Lydonia II, from 1912 to 1917. She spent most of the war based at Gibraltar, escorting and protecting Allied ships in the Mediterranean and along the Atlantic Ocean coast of Europe. After her U.S. Navy service ended, she served from 1919 to 1947 in the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey as the coastal survey ship USCGS Lydonia (CS-302).
USS Akbar (SP-599) was first owned by George W. Childs Drexel of Philadelphia, a member of the city's Corinthian Yacht Club. The original name Akbar, apparently named for Mogul emperor Jalul-ud-Din Muhammed, known as "Akbar", was retained upon entry into naval service.
Aphrodite was a steam yacht that was launched in 1898. When completed in 1899 she was the largest steam yacht yet built in the US. In 1917 she was commissioned into the United States Navy as the patrol vessel USS Aphrodite (SP-135). She was based in France from 1917 to 1918; in England from 1918 to 1919; and then returned to her private owner.
Caribbean Sailing Yachts (CSY) is a company which built heavy-displacement recreational sailboats built during the 1970s and 1980s in Tampa, Florida. CSY was one of the first companies to recognize the impending growth of the Caribbean charter industry and although the company went out of business in the early 1980s, the well-founded boats have continued to sail the world's oceans for the past four decades. CSY's unique script logo was imprinted on a brass companionway medallion, dishware, and trailerboard design.
USS Raeo (SP-588) was a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1919. Prior to her U.S. Navy service, she operated as the motor passenger vessel Raeo from 1908 to 1917. After the conclusion of her U.S. Navy career, she served as the fishery patrol vessel USFS Kittiwake in the United States Bureau of Fisheries fleet from 1919 to 1940 and as US FWS Kittiwake in the Fish and Wildlife Service fleet from 1940 to 1942 and from 1944 to at least 1945, and perhaps as late as 1948. During World War II, she again served in the U.S. Navy, this time as the yard patrol boat USS YP-199. She was the civilian fishing vessel Raeo from 1948 to 1957, then operated in various roles as Harbor Queen from 1957 to 1997. She became Entiat Princess in 1998 and as of 2009 was still in service.
The second USS Juniata (SP-602) was a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1 June 1917 to 13 July 1918. Juniata was built as the private gasoline-powered motor yacht Josephine for Edward Shearson of New York by Robert Jacobs at City Island in the Bronx, New York, in 1911. She was sold in 1914 to George W. Elkins of Philadelphia and renamed Juniata.
USS Margo (SP-870) was a raised deck cruiser built for private use taken into the United States Navy as a Section patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1918 and returned to the owner after the war.
USS Jade (PY-17), was a yacht in commission in the United States Navy as a Patrol Yacht from 1940 to 1945. The vessel was constructed as the yacht Athero II for Jesse Lauriston Livermore in 1926, then sold to Eldridge R. Johnson to be renamed Caroline until replaced by a much larger vessel, also named Caroline, in 1931. The smaller yacht was sold to Joseph M. Schenck of Los Angeles and New York, briefly, before being sold John R. Brinkley, M.D. of Del Rio, Texas, and renamed Doctor Brinkley. In 1940, the US Navy purchased her and renamed her Jade, after the ornamental mineral jade; she is the only Navy ship to bear this name.
The C&C 37/40 is a Canadian 12.05 metres (39.5 ft) LOA fibreglass monohull sailing yacht, designed in 1988 by Robert W. Ball of Cuthbertson & Cassian as a replacement for the earlier C&C 37 dating from 1981. The C&C 37/40 is a recreational keelboat of moderate displacement, intended as a cruiser/racer or oceangoing racer. The yachts have a masthead sloop rig, with a fin keel and an internally-mounted spade-type rudder. Over 110 of the 37/40 type were built before the Canadian plant closed in 1994. The design is no longer produced.
The C&C 57 is a Canadian sailboat. The design was built by C&C Yachts in Canada, but it is now out of production.
The Landfall 48 is a sailboat that was designed by C&C Design and first built in 1980. The Landfall series, begun with the Landfall 42, was part of a trend within C&C Yachts to develop more cruising-oriented designs under company president George Cuthbertson's direction during the later 1970s and early 1980s.
The Columbia 34 is an American sailboat that was designed by Wirth Munroe and Richard Valdez as a cruiser and first built in 1966.
The Freedom 35 is an American sailboat that was designed by David Pedrick as a racer/cruiser and first built in 1993.
The Irwin 41 Citation is an American sailboat that was designed by Ted Irwin as a racer and first built in 1982. The design was bases on a custom boat designed by Irwin, named Razzle Dazzle, which won the Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC) in 1982.
The Gulf 29 is an American sailboat that was designed by Capital Yachts as a pilothouse cruiser and first built in 1982.
