USS Namontack (YN-46/YNT-14/YTB-738) was built in 1938 as the Thomas E. Moran by the Defoe Shipbuilding Company, Bay City, Michigan, for the Moran Towing and Transportation Company, New York City. The name "Namontack" comes from a Native American sent, in 1608, [1] by Chief Powhatan to live with English settlers in Tidewater, Virginia, and gain knowledge of their customs and language. Christopher Newport took him to England on 10 April 1608 to meet the Virginia Company's investors. Namontack remained there for three months and returned to Virginia. [2]
She was built by DeFoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City, Michigan as the Thomas E. Moran. She was purchased by the United States Navy on 28 November 1940; renamed the Namontack and classified YN-46; converted to a net tender at the New York Navy Yard; and placed in service on 18 March 1941. She was 94 feet 5 inches (28.78 m) long, 25 feet (7.6 m) wide, had a draught of 8 feet 6 inches (2.59 m), and displaced 158 long tons (161 t). [2]
She departed New York on 26 March 1941, and on arrival at Norfolk, Virginia, on 28 March, reported for duty to the Commandant 5th Naval District. Based at Little Creek, Virginia, for the duration of the war, she performed tug and net and boom tending services there until 1946, except for the period May to July 1942, when she served on Inshore Patrol duty. During this period, she was reclassified as YNT-14 on 1 May 1942, and was again reclassified to YTB-738 on 2 August 1945. She was placed out of service on 21 August 1946 and was struck from the Navy Directory on 30 December 1946. She was sold on 30 April 1947. [2]
USS Charger (CVE-30) was an escort carrier of the United States Navy during World War II converted from a commercial C3-P&C cargo/passenger liner hull built as Rio de la Plata intended for the Moore-McCormack company's American Republics Line serving the east coast of South America. The ship was requisitioned for conversion to an escort carrier type intended for Royal Navy use and initially commissioned as HMS Charger (D27). Days later the transfer was rescinded with the ship returning to U.S. Navy control to become USS Charger which operated throughout the war as a training ship on the Chesapeake Bay with two ferry missions to Bermuda and Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
USS Pybus (CVE-34) was initially a United States Navy Bogue-class escort carrier. The ship was transferred to the United Kingdom for service in the Royal Navy as the Ruler-class escort carrier HMS Emperor (D98) as part of the Lend-Lease program of World War II. Entering service in 1943, the ship took part in operations against the Tirpitz and the invasions of Normandy and southern France. Returned to the United States following the war, the carrier was sold for scrap in 1946.
USS Nanigo (YTB-537/YTM-537), a harbor tug of the United States Navy, was laid down on 6 December 1944 by the Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp., Morris Heights, New York, launched on 27 March 1945; and placed in service on 30 August 1945.
USS Artisan (ABSD-1), later redesignated as (AFDB-1), was a ten-section, non-self-propelled, large auxiliary floating drydock of the United States Navy. The only U.S. warship with this name, Artisan was constructed in sections during 1942 and 1943 by the Everett-Pacific Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, in Everett, Washington; the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, in Eureka, California; the Pollock-Stockton Shipbuilding Company, in Stockton, California; and the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, in Morgan City, Louisiana. This ship was commissioned at Everett, Washington, on 10 May 1943, Captain Andrew R. Mack in command. With all ten sections joined, she was 927 feet (283 m) long, 28 feet (8.5 m) tall, and with an inside clear width of 133 feet 7 inches (40.72 m).

USS Papaya (AN-49/YN-68) was an Ailanthus-class net laying ship which served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Ocean theatre of operations during World War II. Her career was without major incident, and she returned home after the war bearing two battle stars to her credit.
USS Pepperwood (YN-31/AN-36) was an Aloe-class net laying ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was originally ordered and laid down as USS Walnut (YN-31) but renamed before her August 1941 launch. She was later transferred to the French Navy as Tarentule (A729). She was stricken from the French Navy in April 1972, but her fate beyond that is unreported in secondary sources.
USS Sandalwood (YN-27/AN-32) was an Aloe-class net laying ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was later transferred to the French Navy as Luciole. She was stricken from the French Navy and sold to Malaysian owners, but her fate beyond that is unreported in secondary sources.
USS Mulberry (AN-27/YN-22) was an Aloe-class net laying ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. She saw service in that conflict and the Korean War, earning one battle star for service in the latter conflict. She was decommissioned in April 1960 and placed in reserve. In November 1965, she was transferred to the Ecuadorian Navy as BAE Orion (HI-91). She was scrapped in 1980.
USS Locust (YN-17/AN-22) was an Aloe-class net laying ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was later transferred to the French Navy as Locuste (A765). She was sold to Malaysian owners but sank after striking a reef off Cikobia Island, Fiji, on 30 July 1978. She was towing the former French ship Scorpion, which also sank.
USS Larch (AN-21/YN-16) was an Aloe-class net laying ship which was assigned to serve the U.S. Navy during World War II with her protective anti-submarine nets.
USS Eucalyptus (YN-11/AN-16) was an Aloe-class net laying ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was launched in July 1941, and completed in October 1941. Placed in service at that time without being commissioned, she was commissioned in May 1942, and decommissioned in 1946. She was placed in reserve and later scrapped in 1976.
USS Ebony (YN-10/AN-15) was an Aloe-class net laying ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was launched in June 1941, and completed in September 1941. Placed in service at that time without being commissioned, she was commissioned in May 1942, and decommissioned in March 1946. She was placed in reserve in 1946 and scrapped in 1976.
USS Buckthorn (YN-9/AN-14) was an Aloe-class net laying ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. Originally ordered as USS Dogwood (YN-3), she was renamed and renumbered to Buckthorn (YN-9) before construction began in December 1940. She was launched in March 1941, and completed in September 1941. Placed in service at that time without being commissioned, she was commissioned in December 1942, and decommissioned in August 1947. She was placed in reserve in 1947 and scrapped in 1976.
USS Wapasha (YN-45), later YNT-13, later YTB-737, was a United States Navy net tender, later large harbor tug, in commission from 1941 to 1947.
USS Wapello (YN-56), later YNT-24, was a United States Navy net tender in commission from 1941 to 1946.
USS Evea (YT-458), originally the sixth USS Resolute (YT-458), later YTB-458, was a United States Navy tug in commission from 1943 to 1944.
The Type V ship is a United States Maritime Commission (MARCOM) designation for World War II tugboats. Type V was used in World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Type V ships were used to move ships and barges. Type V tugboats were made of either steel or wood hulls. There were four types of tugboats ordered for World War II. The largest type V design was the sea worthy 186-foot (57 m) long steel hull, V4-M-A1. The V4-M-A1 design was used by a number of manufacturers; a total of 49 were built. A smaller steel hull tugboat was the 94-foot (29 m) V2-ME-A1; 26 were built. The largest wooden hull was the 148-foot (45 m) V3-S-AH2, of which 14 were built. The smaller wooden hull was the 58-foot (18 m) V2-M-AL1, which 35 were built. Most V2-M-AL1 tugboats were sent to the United Kingdom for the war efforts under the lend-lease act. The Type V tugs served across the globe during World War II including: Pacific War, European theatre, and in the United States. SS Farallon, and other Type V tugs, were used to help built Normandy ports, including Mulberry harbour, on D-Day, 6 June 1944, and made nine round trips to Normandy to deliver Phoenix breakwaters.
Everett-Pacific Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company was established in 1942 to build ships needed for World War II. Yard construction began on 1 March 1942. As part of the Emergency Shipbuilding Program, the US Navy provided some of the capital to start Everett-Pacific Shipbuilding at Port Gardner Bay in Everett, Washington. Everett-Pacific was sold in 1945 to the Pacific Car and Foundry, who was already a major manufacturer of railcars and trucks. Pacific Car and Foundry was building barges for the US Navy during World War II at plants in Renton, Seattle and Tacoma in the state of Washington. The lease for the shipyard in Everett, Washington ended in 1949 and the yard closed. Pacific Car and Foundry in 1972 changed its name to Paccar Inc. to reflect its major products. The Everett-Pacific shipyard site later became part of Western Gear, a heavy machinery manufacturer. From 1987 to 1992, the shipyard was rebuilt to become part of Naval Station Everett. Everett-Pacific Shipbuilding was started by William Pigott Jr. a Seattle businessmen and his brother Paul Pigott (1900-1961). William Pigott Jr. was born in 26 Aug. 1895 in Pueblo, CO and died on 8 July 1947 in San Francisco, CA.
