In the first edition, 10 players competed in a round robin format, with the top 4 players advancing to the playoffs. "The Hammer" Matteo Berrettini won the event, defeating "The Greek God" Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final 16–15, 15–12, 12–14, 8–15, 3–2.

Casper Ruud is a Norwegian professional tennis player. Ruud has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 2, achieved on 12 September 2022, making him the highest-ranked Norwegian in history. He has won twelve ATP Tour singles titles and finished runner-up at three majors and at the 2022 ATP Finals.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is a Greek professional tennis player. He has been ranked as high as world No. 3 by the ATP, which he first achieved on 9 August 2021, making him the highest-ranked Greek, tied with Maria Sakkari.
Matteo Berrettini is an Italian professional tennis player. He has been ranked as high as world No. 6 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which he achieved in January 2022, and world No. 105 in doubles, attained in July 2019. Berrettini has won ten ATP Tour singles titles and two doubles titles, and produced his best major performance by reaching the singles final of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. He also became the first man born in the 1990s and first Italian man to reach the quarterfinals or better at all four majors after earning his first Australian Open semifinal in 2022.
Gaël Monfils defeated Andrey Rublev in the final, 6–2, 6–3 to win the singles tennis title at the 2018 Qatar Open.
The 2019 ATP Finals (also known as the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals for sponsorship reasons) was a men's tennis tournament played at the O2 Arena on indoor hard courts in London, United Kingdom, from 10 to 17 November 2019. It was the season-ending event for the highest-ranked singles players and doubles teams on the 2019 ATP Tour and was the 50th edition of the tournament (45th in doubles). The singles event was won by Stefanos Tsitsipas over Dominic Thiem in three sets. In doubles, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut defeated Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus in straight sets.
Roger Federer's 2019 tennis season officially began on 30 December 2018, with the start of the Hopman Cup. His season ended on 16 November 2019, with a loss in the semifinals of the ATP Finals. Despite failing to defend his title at the Australian Open, Federer was able to maintain his ranking of World No. 3 by the end of the year.
Two-time defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Dominic Thiem in a rematch of the previous year's final, 6–3, 5–7, 6–1, 6–1 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2019 French Open. It was his record-extending twelfth French Open title and 18th major title overall. With the win, Nadal broke the all-time record for the most singles titles by a player at the same major.
Nikoloz Basilashvili was the defending champion, but lost in the second round to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Daniil Medvedev defeated Alexander Zverev in the final, 6–4, 6–1 to win the singles tennis title at the 2019 Shanghai Masters. He did not drop a set en route to the title.
Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Dominic Thiem in the final, 6–7(6–8), 6–2, 7–6(7–4) to win the singles tennis title at the 2019 ATP Finals. Tsitsipas was making his tournament debut. It marked the first instance since 2005, and only the fourth instance overall, that the Tour Finals champion was determined via a final-set tiebreak.
Novak Djokovic defeated Milos Raonic in the final, 1–6, 6–3, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2020 Cincinnati Masters. With the win, he claimed his record-equaling 35th Masters 1000 title, and completed the double career Golden Masters. Djokovic became the first new singles titleist on the ATP Tour since its suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
Daniil Medvedev defeated Dominic Thiem in the final, 4–6, 7–6(7–2), 6–4 to win the singles tennis title at the 2020 ATP Finals. Medvedev became the fourth man to defeat the world's top-three ranked players en route to a title.
Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Andrey Rublev in the final, 6–3, 6–3 to win the singles tennis title at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters. It was his first ATP Tour Masters 1000 title, making him the first Greek to win a Masters tournament. Rublev was also in contention for his maiden Masters 1000 title.

Alexander Zverev defeated Matteo Berrettini in the final, 6–7(8–10), 6–4, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2021 Madrid Open. It was Zverev's fourth Masters 1000 title, his first since Madrid 2018, and his 15th career ATP Tour singles title overall. Berrettini was in contention to become the second Italian to be a Masters 1000 champion.
Alexander Zverev defeated the defending champion Daniil Medvedev in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the singles tennis title at the 2021 ATP Finals. It was his second ATP Finals title. With the win, Zverev ended a six-year streak of different winners at the tournament, dating to 2015.
Defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final, 6–3, 7–6(7–3) to win the singles tennis title at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. It was his sixth Italian Open title and record-extending 38th Masters 1000 title overall. Djokovic did not lose a set during the tournament, and won his 1000th ATP Tour-level career match against Casper Ruud in the semifinals.

It was held at the Tennis Club Weissenhof in Stuttgart, Germany, from 6 June until 12 June 2022. Second-seed Matteo Berrettini won the singles title.
