The Ubaye (French pronunciation: [ybaj] ; Occitan : Ubaia) is a river of southeastern France. It is 83 kilometres (52 mi) long and flows through the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. [1] Its drainage basin is 1,009 km2 (390 sq mi). [2]

Its rises at the Col de Longet, in the Cottian Alps on the border with Italy. It flows generally southwest, through Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye, Jausiers and Barcelonnette. It flows into the Lac de Serre-Ponçon (which is fed and drained by the Durance) near La Bréole.

The Lac de Serre-Ponçon, known in English as the Lake of Serre-Ponçon, is a reservoir on the border between the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Southeastern France, one of the largest in Western Europe. The lake gathers the waters of the Durance and the Ubaye rivers, flowing down through the Hautes-Alpes and the Alpes du Sud to the Rhône. The waters are dammed by the Barrage de Serre-Ponçon, a 123-metre (404 ft) high earth core dam.

The Gave de Pau is a river of south-western France. It takes its name from the city of Pau, through which it flows. The river is 181.3 kilometres (112.7 mi) long, and although its source is considered to be on the Cirque de Gavarnie in the Pyrenees mountains waters feed it from the slopes of Monte Perdido in Spain. From the Lago Helado on the slopes of Perdido water works through a cave system to emerge from the Resurgence Brulle via the Grotte Devaux on the French side of the border. The Gave de Pau joins the Gave d'Oloron in Peyrehorade to form the about 9-kilometre (6 mi) long Gaves réunis, which is a left tributary of the Adour. The Gaves réunis is often considered to be part of the Gave de Pau.

The fort is actually an ensemble of fortifications, including some "batteries" that rival the main fort in size and power.
