Ubi Franklin, born Ubi Ekapong Ofem, is a Nigerian music artist manager, politician, entrepreneur, TV show host and the founder of record label Made Men Music Group (Triple MG) and Instant Apartment. Franklin is the current Special Adviser to Cross River State Governor Benedict Ayade on Tourism.

Early and personal life

Ubi Franklin was born in Cross River State, Nigeria on 2 February 1986. [1] He is the 11th of 15 children. He had his primary and secondary education in Calabar, after which he studied law at the University Madonna Nigeria. [2]

On 1 November 2015, Ubi Franklin married Nigerian actress Lilian Esoro. [3] Their son Jayden, was born on 17 July 2016. [4] Presently, he has four children, two daughters (Zaneta and Ariella) and two sons (Jayden and Shiloh). Franklin admitted that from July 2016 to March 2017, he struggled to overcome bouts of depression which almost led him to commit suicide. [1]

He was almost killed by a man at a furniture store in Lagos, but by the quick intervention of his cousin, he was saved. The attacker was eventually arrested. [5]

Career

Franklin worked as an assistant to Julius Agwu before going on to work with AY Makun and other artists. He then worked promoting shows. In 2010, he became Iyanya's manager before the song "kukere" was released, which became a hit. [6] In 2014, when the label had expanded, other artists, including Tekno, Emma Nyra, and Selebobo were signed. [7]

In 2016, Franklin was named City People Music Awards' Music Manager of the Year. [8] In July 2017, he launched Instant Pickup, an online service that offers instant home pickup and delivery of laundry. He also launched Instant Apartment, an online platform that offers luxury apartments for rent same year. In October 2018, he launched Instant Ryde, an online taxi service in his home town Calabar, Cross River state and Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. [9] [10]

In 2020, Ubi Franklin was appointed as Special Adviser on Tourism by Cross River State Governor Benedict Ayade. [11]

Franklin is also a public speaker. He was a speaker at the Youth Enterprise Conference organised by Nairabet's founder, Otunba Akin Alabi. [12] He also shared stage with chairman of First Bank, Ibukun Awosika, and Veteran Nollywood Actor Richard Mofe Damijo at the Hub Business Conference organised by Commonwealth of Zion Assembly. [13]

Philanthropy

In 2017, Ubi Franklin launched the 'Ubi Franklin Startup fund', a platform to fund existing business ideas and plans. Through the fund, he has supported several businesses in Nigeria with startup capital and funds. [14] [15]

Calabar Carnival is an annual carnival held in Cross River State, Nigeria. Also known as Africa's Biggest Street Party, the carnival holds every December and was declared by the then governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke as an activity to mark Christmas celebration yearly. He said his vision for creating the festival was to make Cross-River a home of tourism and hospitality in Nigeria and Africa. The quality of the festival has grown over the years making it Nigeria's biggest carnival and an internationally recognized festival. It used to be a month-long event that began on the 1st of December, until the former governor of the state, Benedict Ayade reduced it to two weeks after he was elected. During the 2017 carnival, Former governor Benedict Ayade said in his speech that the carnival is to showcase Africa as the richest continent and a blessed place where the young ones should be proud to belong. The carnival has always been entertaining and colourful as different competitions take place and huge cash prizes are won. Calabar which is also known by the name Canaan City, is a city in south-eastern Nigeria. Calabar is actually the capital city of Cross River State. Calabar sits adjacent to the Calabar and Great Kwa Rivers and Falls as well as the creeks of the Cross River.

University of Cross River State also known as UNICROSS is a state-owned tertiary institution with four campuses spread across four Local Government Areas of the state. The University was formerly known as the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH). It was renamed in February of 2021 by a bill passed at Cross River State House of Assembly which was then approved by the former Governor of the State, Benedict Ayade. The change of the tertiary institution's name was to enable the varsity function as a conventional University, which provides the opportunity to offer more professional courses rather focusing on tech-related courses. The present Vice Chancellor of the institution is Prof Augustine Angba.

The 2019 Cross River State gubernatorial election occurred on March 9, 2019. Incumbent PDP Governor Benedict Ayade won re-election for a second term, defeating APC's John Owan Enoh, and several minor party candidates.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Cross River State gubernatorial election</span> 2023 gubernatorial election in Cross River State, Nigeria

The 2023 Cross River State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Cross River State, concurrent with elections to the Cross River State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Benedict Ayade was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term.

The Calabar Monorail is an abandoned monorail system in Calabar, state capital of Cross River state, Nigeria. The single-track, 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi) line runs from the Calabar International Convention Centre to the Tinapa Resort. The project was initiated by the former governor of Cross River state, Senator Liyel Imoke and completed by successor Benedict Ayade.

Paradise Music Festival and Awards was established in 2012 and is endorsed by the Cross River State Government. The award is designed to celebrate outstanding talents in the entertainment industry across South South Nigeria.It is listed on the events calendar of the annual Calabar Carnival. The award is in two segments; The Lifetime achievement award and the special merit award category which is done through online voting.
