Uyo

Uyo is the capital city of Akwa Ibom, as state in South South Nigeria. [3] [4]

It became the capital on September 23, 1987 when Akwa Ibom was created from the former Cross River State. [5] According to the 2006 Nigerian Census, the population of Uyo (including Itu) is 427,873, [6] while the greater urban area, including Uruan, has a population of 554,906. [7] The population of Uyo is put at 1,393,000 as at 2024. [8]

Ibibio is the primary indigenous language. [9] The main campus of the University of Uyo is in Nwaniba, with satellites on Ikpa Road. [10]

Climate

With warm, cloudy wet seasons and hot, largely cloudy dry seasons, Uyo has a year-round oppressive environment with temperatures ranging from 69 °F to 87 °F. [12] [13] [14] [15]

The average wind vector in Uyo, which is greatly influenced by terrain and other local characteristics, is discussed in this section. August is the windiest month, with an average wind speed of 6.4 miles per hour. The windier season lasts 4.4 months. The more tranquil period lasts 7.6 months, with December having the lowest average speed of 4.0 miles per hour. [12] [13] [14]

Abak is a town and Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The LGA was previously part of Cross River State. It was later sub divided into other local government areas such as Oruk Anam, Etim Ekpo, Ukanafun and Ika. Notable tribes include the Annang. Abak consists of five clans: Abak Urban, Afaha obong, Ediene, Midim and Otoro. The major economic activities of the people of this area before and after the Nigerian Civil War was palm produce exported through river port at Ekpene Okpo, Ntak Ibesit, a distance of about 8 km from Abak town. Abak town, the local government headquarters is located about 18 kilometres from Uyo, the State capital. It has a landmass of 304 square kilometers. Abak to say the least, is the shadow of its former self due to politically motivated neglect by successive governments in Akwa Ibom state. Abak was the economic hub of the former Southeastern Nigeria before the civil war. The Nigerian Army barrack that is popularly known as Ibagwa Barrack is located or can be found in the Abak. Ikot Ekpene, also known as The Raffia City, is a historic town in south-southern state of Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. It is the political and cultural capital of the Annang ethnic group in Nigeria. The town is located on the A342 highway that parallels the coast, between Calabar to the southeast and Aba to the west, with the state capital, Uyo, on this road just to the east. Umuahia is the next major town to the north. The population of the Ikot Ekpene Local government area was estimated to be 180,500 in 2022.

Obong Victor Bassey Attah was Governor of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Etinan is located within the South South part of Nigeria and constitutes one of the Local Government Areas in the oil rich Akwa Ibom State. Known for its agricultural and arts craft products, the area forms one of the most peaceful locations in the West African State of Nigeria.

Oruk Anam is a Local Government Area located in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. The indigenous population is largely made up of Annang people, one of the minority tribes in Southeast Nigeria.

Eastern Obolo is a Local Government Area (LGA) in southern Nigeria, with its headquarters at Okoroete. It is a coastal local government area in Akwa-Ibom State under great tidal influence from the Bight of Bonny. Eastern Obolo LGA was mapped out of Ikot Abasi LGA by the Federal Government of Nigeria on 4 December 1996 with over 30,000 residents across a total area of approximately 17,000 km2. It comprises 16 villages, divided into two clans, namely Okoroete and Iko. It has ten political wards. All the villages in Eastern Obolo are of the Obolo ethnic group, there exist a common ancestral lineage which allows for peaceful coexistence and inter-relationship amongst them.

Ibiono-Ibom is a Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State in the south-south region of Nigeria. It has its administrative headquarters at Oko Ita.

Ikono is a Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, located in the South South of Nigeria. It is bounded at the North, by Ini Local Government Area, South by Abak and Uyo Local Government Areas, East by Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area and West by Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim and Obot Akara Local Government Areas. It was created as a local government in september 1996. It has a landmass of 407.16 square kilometres (157.21 sq mi). It is no doubt one of the four largest LGA in Akwa Ibom, and also known as the cradle of the Ibibio people [Ntippe Ibibio]. It occupies the northern fringe of Akwa-Ibom State next to Ini local Government which occupies the northern most fringe of the state. It is predominantly inhabited by the Ibibios, the largest ethnic groups in the state. Some popular sub-groups within Ikono include Ukpom, Nung Ukim and Ediene.

Ini is located in the south of Nigeria and is a local government area of Akwa Ibom State.

Mkpat-Enin is located in the South South region of Nigeria and is a town and a Local Government Area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom State. It sits at an altitude of approximately 185 metres (607 ft) above sea level.

Nsit Atai Local government area was created in the year 1996 with its capital at Odot by the government of Gen. Sani Abacha. It has an area of out of an about 17,000 square kilometers, with 62 villages.

Nsit Ibom is a local government area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, it shares common boundaries with Ibesikpo Asutan, Etinan, Nsit Ubium and Uyo Local Government Areas. The people of Nsit Ibom are of the Ibibio ethnic extraction.

ObongAkpan Isemin was elected governor of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria from January 1992 to November 1993 during the Nigerian Third Republic.

John James Akpan Udo-Edehe was elected Senator for the Akwa Ibom North East District of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He took office on 29 May 1999.

Akwa Ibom North-East senatorial district in Akwa Ibom State covers 9 local governments areas which consist Ibiono Ibom, Itu, Uyo, Uruan, Ibesikpo Asutan, Nsit Ibom, Nsit Atai, Etinan, Nsit Ubium. Akwa Ibom North-East is also known as Uyo which is its headquarters. As of 2019, this district has 94 Registration Areas (RAs) and 987 polling units (PUs) and its collation centre is located in Uyo LGA INEC office. Obong Bassey Albert Akpan of the People’s Democratic Party is the current representative of Akwa Ibom North-East. As of 29 may 2023, Aniekan Bassey of People Democratic Party emerge as the current representative of Akwa Ibom North- East.

Ibom Power Company Limited (IPC) is one of the first independent power plants in Nigeria inaugurated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo during the administration of Obong Victor Attah. It is a gas-fired power plant located in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State. The company has its corporate office in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital with a liaison office at FCT Abuja. Ibom Power was registered and incorporated with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in January 2001 by Akwa Ibom Investment and Industrial Promotion Council “AKIIPOC” now Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP). The Company is solely owned by the Akwa Ibom State Government. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission licensed Ibom Power to generate 191megawatts of power in May 2008. The license was increased from 191megawatts to 685Megawatts in November 2015. The 191megawatts Ibom power plant receives gas from Accugas, a subsidiary of Seven Energy (now Savannah Energy) based on a 10-year Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement, GSPA. The gas is transported from a Gas Processing Facility at Uquo in Esit Eket LGA to a Gas Receiving Facility in Ikot Abasi. Ibom power plant evacuates its output through a 49 km 132kV transmission line from Ikot Abasi to Eket 132/33kV double circuit substation. From Eket transmission substation, the power is transported to the transmission substation at Afaha Ube, in Uyo, from Uyo to Itu, and from Itu to the national grid at Alaoji, Abia State. Ibom Power has had three different Managing Directors. The pioneering MD, Mr. Gareth Wilcox, a Briton, led the company’s management from 2001 to May 2014. His successor, Dr. Victor Udo led the company from June 2014 to 31 July 2016. Engr. Meyen Etukudo succeeded Dr. Udo. Engr. Etukudo has led the company from 1 August 2016 to date. Ibom Power’s highest decision-making body is the Board of Directors led by Engr. Etido Inyang as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. The Directors are Barr. Uwem Ekanem, Hon. Ayang Ayang and Hon. Emmanuel Ebe. Ibom power has only one customer; the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company Plc, NBET.
