The Ukrainian Studies Fund (also known as the Ukrainian Studies Chair Fund or Harvard Ukrainian Studies Fund) is a charitable educational organization founded by the Ukrainian diaspora in the U.S. It supports university programs and promotes knowledge about Ukraine by funding the Ukrainian Studies program at Harvard. [1]
Established in 1957 at The Federation of Ukrainian Student Organizations of America (SUSTA) convention. Officially registered in 1958 as The Foundation of the Ukrainian Studies Department, Inc.. The goal was to establish a Ukrainian Studies chair at a leading U.S. university. By the late 1960s, over $250,000 was raised through diaspora contributions. Most contributions ranged from $10 to $100. [2]
In 1967 the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI) was created according to plans of professor Omeljan Pritsak. At the time, the cost of establishing one chair at Harvard was $600,000. [3] After that, efforts focused on raising $2 million to establish and support a Ukrainian research institute. The three chairs — history, literature, linguistics, opened in 1973, followed by HURI. [4]
After Ukraine’s independence, USF expanded support to programs in the U.S., Canada, Ukraine, and Europe. It funds the Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto, University of Alberta, [5] and provides support for research projects at a number of institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine [6] and the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv.
