Uma Sudhir is an Indian journalist, [1] who is the executive editor of the South Indian division of the television news network NDTV. [2] Sudhir has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award and the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediapersons. [3] [4] [5]

Biography

Born in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, Uma spent her childhood in a number of cities around India such as Mumbai and Hyderabad, and eventually completed her schooling and her undergraduate studies in New Delhi. She entered the field of journalism through a one year programme at the Times School of Journalism in 1989 and began her career at The Times of India in New Delhi. She is noted have been the features editor of the newspaper during Miss Universe 1994 and was the one to cover Sushmita Sen winning the peagant. Uma married a peer journalist T. S. Sudhir and moved to the city of Hyderabad around August 1995. [1]

She was responsible for the political coverage of N. Chandrababu Naidu's rebellion against N. T. Rama Rao in the state of Andhra Pradesh which began days after her shifting to its capital of Hyderabad. [1] During her employment at the Times Group, she had also been involved in working with its business news, The Economic Times . [6] In 1998, Uma moved to the new television channel Star News (later renamed to NDTV). [1] Over the following period, she was appointed as the resident editor in the city of Hyderabad and eventually became the executive editor of the South Indian division of the television network of NDTV. [6]

In 2015, she won the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award in the category of broadcast journalism. [4] On 6 March 2017, she also became the recipient of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediapersons for "[h]er incisive and analytical reports [that] help create awareness of ground realities in various states". [7] She has also been recognised by the Confederation of Indian Industry as an industry leader in her field of work. [8]

The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards are one of the awards in India in the field of journalism. Named after Ramnath Goenka, the awards have been held annually since 2006, with the 12th edition being held in 2017. The awards are given for both print journalism as well as broadcast journalism, with a total of 25 different prizes being awarded in 2017 for excellence in journalism during 2016. In Fact Indian Express group started, Ramnath Goenka India Press Photo Award in 2004. This award was only for media photographers and the winners was announced in December 2004 at Nariman House, Express tower in Mumbai and Photo Journalist Shailendra Pandey won The First Picture of the year award.

The Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Woman Mediaperson is an Indian journalism award named after Chameli Devi Jain, an Indian independence activist who became the first Jain woman to go to prison during India's independence struggle. According to Business Standard, the award is "perhaps India's longest running media award for women".

She was the recipient of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediapersons in 1999 and has served as an advisor to the Media Task Force of the high level committee of the Government of India. In the 2020 edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, she was appointed as one of the jurors along with the likes of B. N. Srikrishna and S. Y. Quraishi.

Shahina K. K., alternatively KK Shahina or Shahina Nafeesa, a veteran Indian journalist who has worked across print and broadcast media to shed light on issues such as gender, human rights, and marginalized communities, along with the injustices they face. She is a Senior Editor Outlook Magazine, and a contributor for The Washington Post. She is among the four winners of the CPJ International Press Freedom Awards this year from different continents all over the world. She is the fourth Indian to achieve this recognition. Rohini Mohan is an Indian journalist and writer, currently working independently. In 2019, she was the recipient of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediaperson. Her first book, The Seasons of Trouble (2014) won the Shakti Bhatt Prize in 2015, and the Tata Literature Live! First Book Award.

Chameli Devi Jain (1928–1983) was an Indian freedom fighter, journalist, and an advocate for women's rights. She played a significant role in the Indian independence movement and later became one of India's pioneering women journalists.
