Umbra Vitae is an American death metal supergroup formed in 2020. The band features vocalist Jacob Bannon (Converge), guitarists Mike McKenzie (The Red Chord) and Sean Martin (Twitching Tongues, Hatebreed), bassist Greg Weeks (The Red Chord) and drummer Jon Rice (Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Job for a Cowboy). The band's debut album, Shadow of Life, was released in 2020.

History

Umbra Vitae was formed by Jacob Bannon, Mike McKenzie and Sean Martin during the rehearsal sessions for Bannon's solo project, Wear Your Wounds. During the album cycle for Wear Your Wounds, bassist Greg Weeks and drummer Jon Rice joined the line-up. The band takes its name from the 1912 poem of the same name by Georg Heym. [1] [2]

In March 2020, the band announced its debut album, Shadow of Life and issued the lead single, "Return to Zero". [1] The record was produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. [3] In April 2020, the music video for the track "Mantra of Madness" was released. [4] [5] In June 2020, the band released the second music video, "Ethereal Emptiness". [6]

On March 25, 2024, the band announced their second album, Light of Death, would be released on June 7. [7]

Musical style

Umbra Vitae has been described as a death metal band. [1] [4] [8] On the band's sound, Bannon has stated: "This is the closest thing I've done that's rooted in more traditional death metal, at least in terms of speed and ferocity and heaviness." [1] According to Jamie Ludwig of Chicago Reader , the band's debut album "mixes 90s and modern influences with hardcore energy and plenty of grit, anxiety, and rage." [9]

Chad Salter joined as a second guitarist and appeared on the band's 1987 debut Pain of Mind and then Steve Von Till replaced him in 1989. The following year, the lineup further expanded to include a keyboardist and a visual artist. Bands in the genre emphasize complex and fluctuant rhythms through the use of irregular time signatures, polymeters, syncopations and tempo changes. Early mathcore lyrics were addressed from a realistic worldview and with a pessimistic, defiant, resentful or sarcastic point of view.

Converge is an American metalcore band formed by vocalist and artist Jacob Bannon and guitarist and producer Kurt Ballou in Salem, Massachusetts in 1990. While recording their landmark fourth album Jane Doe in 2001, the group became a four-piece with the departure of guitarist Aaron Dalbec and the addition of bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller. This lineup has remained intact since. The members have also been involved in various side-projects and collaborations, including the bands Supermachiner (Bannon), Old Man Gloom (Newton), and Mutoid Man (Koller). With their extremely aggressive and boundary-pushing sound, rooted in hardcore and heavy metal, they are pioneers of metalcore and its subgenre mathcore.

The band gained a fanbase with its 2002 debut album Fused Together in Revolving Doors. The second album, Clients, was released in 2005 and sold over 50,000 copies in the U.S. They released their third album, Prey for Eyes in 2007, which sold between 4,000 and 5,000 copies and debuted at No. 198 on the Billboard 200 chart. Their latest album, 2009's Fed Through the Teeth Machine, debuted at No. 180 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Both pieces were created during a seven-day excursion to Dune Shacks of Peaked Hill Bars Historic District and self-released on May 19, 2017—only one month after Wear Your Wounds' debut album, WYW.

Bloodmoon: I is the tenth studio album by American metalcore band Converge, and a collaboration album with Chelsea Wolfe. It was released on November 19, 2021, via Epitaph Records and Deathwish Inc, the band's first studio album in four years since 2017's The Dusk in Us. Converge's longtime collaborator Stephen Brodsky and Wolfe's longtime collaborator Ben Chisholm also contributed. It was met with universal critical acclaim, receiving an average score of 89 based on 10 reviews aggregated by Metacritic.

Blood from the Soul is an industrial metal supergroup formed by Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury. The band's debut album, To Spite the Gland That Breeds (1993), featured Embury with Sick of It All vocalist Lou Koller. In 2020, Embury reformed the band with a new line-up, featuring vocalist Jacob Bannon, drummer Dirk Verbeuren and bassist Jesper Liveröd. The band's sophomore record, DSM-5, was released in the same year.
