The Umngot River, also known as the Dawki River and Wah Umngot, is a river which flows through Dawki, a small town located at the bottom of the Jaintia Hills in West Jaintia Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. [1] [2] The town is relatively busy and serves as a trade route between India and Bangladesh. The river is known for its cleanliness and transparent water with a visible riverbed. [3]
The Umngot, arguably one of India's cleanest rivers, [4] is an important fishing spot for local fishermen. The river sits on the India-Bangladesh border, and a white portion of the river, caused by a rise in the current, marks the unofficial boundary between the two countries. [5]
A suspension bridge, the Dawki Bridge, hangs over the Umngot River. It was constructed in 1932, and is a place of interest. [6] [7]
In April 2021, the Meghalaya government undertook a decision to construct a dam on the river, in view of shortage of electricity. The project was the proposed 210 MW Umngot Hydroelectric Project, which received loads of backlash and opposition from the local villagers, who feared that its construction would disrupt tourism. [8] The project was eventually scrapped. [9]

Pema Khandu is an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Dorjee Khandu. Since assuming the office of the Chief Minister in July 2016, he and his government have twice changed their party affiliation; in September from the Indian National Congress to the Peoples Party of Arunachal, and then in December 2016 to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Previously he had served as Minister of Tourism, Urban Development and Water Resources in Nabam Tuki's government.

He served as Minister for Water Resources and major and medium irrigation from 2008 to 2013, Home Affairs, Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Cooperation between 2019 and 2021 minister in charge of Haveri and Udupi districts from 2019 to 2021.

The Meghalaya mining accident happened on 13 December 2018, when 15 miners were trapped in a mine in Ksan, in the Indian state of Meghalaya. While five miners managed to escape, rescue efforts for the remaining 10 continued till 2 March 2019. The miners were trapped inside the coal mine at a depth of around 370 feet in Jaintia Hills district after digging with the rat-hole mining technique. The tunnel the miners were in flooded with water after they cut into an adjacent mine which was full of water from the nearby Lytein river.

Waterways have always been an important mode of transport in Kerala. The total length of navigable route in Kerala was 1,900 kilometres and the navigable rivers constitute about 54 per cent of the waterways. Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge is a living root bridge in Meghalaya, India. It can be reached via trekking 45 km from Cherapunji. The trek is 6500 steps. There is also a waterfall nearby.
Aruvikkara Dam is located in Aruvikkara in Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala. This Gravity and Masonry dam was built across the Karamana River and was completed in 1972 is used for irrigation and supplying drinking water to the city of Thiruvananthapuram. The Aruvikkara dam project came up in the 1930s and has been supported by the Peppara dam built in 1983. The height of the dam is 14.01 meters and the length is 83.21 meters. The Aruvikkara Dam meets the irrigation needs of Thiruvananthapuram. The reservoir is also one of the water tourism sites in Kerala.

The practice is banned by the National Green Tribunal; however, the techniques are still employed by artisanal mining operations in several parts of India, especially in Meghalaya.
