Unity Jiu Jitsu is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy and team started in 2015 with its headquarter based in New York City. Murilo Santana is the head instructor. [3]

History

Unity Jiu Jitsu was established in New York City in January 2015 by Paulo Miyao, his brother Joao, Ana Lowry, and Yago de Souza, all from Cicero Costha’s academy in Brazil as well as Murilo Santana from Barbosa Academy. [1] [4] Murilo Santana became the head instructor while the Miyao brothers and Yago De Souza were resident athletes. [3]

The first Unity members to compete at the 2015 IBJJF World Championship were Paulo & Joao Miyao, Murilo Santana, Leandro Lo, Luiza Monteiro, Yago De Souza, Mitch MacDonald, Devhonte Johnson, Matheus Francisco, Junny Ocasio, Brian Richards, Alix Cornu, Thiago Abud, Andres Limongi, Johnavelle Gabriel, Tanner Rice, Ana Lowry, Asif Mansoor, and Antoine Delannoy. [5] Unity ended their first world championship in the top ten academies with 19 points. [6] In June 2020 the Miyao Brothers announced their departure from the team. [7]

Paulo Henrique Bordignon Miyao is a Brazilian BJJ black belt with a notable competitive record. He and his brother João Miyao have a competitive rivalry with Keenan Cornelius: after several defeats to Cornelius in 2012, Paulo would go on to defeat Keenan at the 2013 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the brown belt absolute division, a remarkable feat for his given weight-class. Paulo trains under Cicero Costha alongside his brother João and world champion, Leandro Lo.

Leandro Pereira do Nascimento Lo, better known as Leandro Lo, was a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt competitor. A record holder with eight IBJJF world championship titles in five different weight classes, as well as multiple wins at every major international tournament, Lo is considered one of the most accomplished jiu-jitsu competitors of all time.

Augusto Mendes is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner. He is currently signed to the Absolute Championship Berkut. He was the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Black Belt World 70 kg champion (2013), International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation World Nogi 73.5 kg champion in 2012 and 2015 and UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro Champion in 2011 and 2013.

Luiza Monteiro is a Brazilian submission grappler and 2nd degree black belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor. She has won gold medals in the Gi at all four major events and in no-gi at three of the four major events.

Alexandre Carneiro Monteiro de Freitas commonly known as Alexandre "Soca" Freitas is a Brazilian grappler, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor and instructor. He is the founder of Soca BJJ.

A multiple time IBJJF World, Pan American and European champion in lower belt divisions; Johnson is a black belt IBJJF World No-Gi, Pan American No-Gi and European Open No-Gi Champion.

Chloé McNally is an American competitor of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. A No-Gi World Champion, IBJJF Pan American Champion and Brazilian National Champion in colored belts, McNally is a two-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championship and Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship black belt medallist.

Micael Ferreira Galvão, commonly known as Mica Galvão, is a submission grappler, Luta Livre and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt competitor from the Brazilian state of Amazonas. A highly decorated athlete competing since childhood, Galvão was promoted to black belt in 2021, at the age of 17, less than three years after reaching blue belt. In 2022 Galvão won the 2022 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship before testing positive for a banned substance, was stripped of said title and received a one-year suspension ban.

Craig Benjamin Jones is an Australian grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt competitor and coach. An IBJJF World No-Gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion as a white belt, Jones is a two-time ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship silver medalist and a three-time Polaris Pro Grappling champion. Jones trains out of Austin, Texas, and is the head of B Team Jiu-Jitsu.

Brianna Ste-Marie is a Canadian submission grappler, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt athlete. An IBJJF World No-Gi, Pan American, European and American national jiu-jitsu champion in coloured belts, as well as a Combat Jiu-Jitsu and Medusa champion; Ste-Marie is a 2022 World No-GI champion, a 2023 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship medallist and the 2022 ADCC Submission Grappling under 60 kilograms (130 lb) silver medallist.
