University Place (formerly known as University Mall) is the only enclosed shopping mall in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The mall is anchored by SilverSpot Cinema.The gross leasable area of the center is 366,000 square feet. [1] The mall is located about two miles northeast from downtown and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Today the mall has an even mix of national and local stores, with a focus on specialty retailers.
The mall originally opened with Ivey's and Belk (Belk-Leggett Horton) in 1973, and Roses Stores as a junior anchor. It was developed by E. N. Richards and originally featured 78 stores. [2]
Ivey's became Dillard's in 1990. In 2002, after The Streets at Southpoint was completed, Belk closed its store at the mall and South Square Mall store in Durham and consolidated both stores into one larger store at Southpoint. Upmarket gourmet retailer Southern Season bought and renovated the former Belk space in 2003. [3] The mall received an exterior and interior renovation 2010. [4]
In 2010, the Chapel Hill Public Library initially planned a permanent move into the mall by taking over Dillard's space. However, Dillard's opted to remain in place and the town rejected the idea of moving the library there, [5] so the library moved into temporary inline space in the mall instead while the current library underwent a renovation and expansion project. [6]
In 2013, several businesses from University Square on Franklin Street moved to the mall itself. The Kidzu Children's Museum was the first, taking over the temporary space of the Chapel Hill Library. Four others soon followed, as William Travis Jewelry, Fine Feathers, and Peacock Alley moved into the former Kerr Drug space. Glee Kids, a children's specialty clothing store, moved nearby. TrySports, a specialty fitness retailer, also opened the same year next door to Southern Season. [7] Fine Feathers is a women’s apparel boutique that began operating at University Square in 1976. William Travis Jewelry, a custom jewelry design store founded and owned by William Travis Kukovich, opened in 2002 in University Square. Kukovich's anchor store was 500 square feet, about a third of the size of the store he replaced it with. His new store at the mall, which replaced the store at University Square, opened on September 2, 2013, and is 3000 square feet. [8] Kukovich's last store was ranked as one of the JCK top 50 jewelry designer stores in the country [9]
In late 2013, Dillard's closed its store and was replaced with a movie theater. [10] It had been converted into a clearance center. [11] In April 2014, the closure of the Roses store was announced as well. [12]
In late 2014, Madison Marquette announced that University Mall would be renamed University Place. [13] [14] By late 2015, the name change was complete, with a website update along with language referencing the new name, including signage and facades at the mall now being named University Place.
Southern Season closed its store at University Place in January 2020 and shifted its operations to an online business model. [15]
In June 2021, the Chapel Hill Town Council approved a special use permit for a major redevelopment of University Place. [16]
Mall of Georgia is an enclosed super-regional shopping mall located in unincorporated Gwinnett County, Georgia, near the city of Buford, 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Atlanta. Opened in 1999, it is currently the largest shopping mall in both the Atlanta Metropolitan Area and the state of Georgia, consisting of 188 stores on three levels. Featured in the mall is a large village section, comprising lifestyle tenants and restaurants in an outdoor setting, as well as a 500-seat amphitheater. In 2017 the Mall of Georgia renovated the indoor food court area by updating the seating arrangements, furniture styles, and color schemes. Mall of Georgia was built by and is still owned by Simon Property Group. A portion of the Ivy Creek Greenway runs along the shopping mall area. The mall features the traditional retailers JCPenney, Belk, Dick's Sporting Goods, Macy's, Dillard's, and Von Maur, in addition to a 20-screen Regal Cinemas which also features IMAX. The anchor stores are Von Maur, Macy's, Dillard's, Belk, JCPenney, Havertys Furniture, Barnes & Noble, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Regal Cinemas.
SouthPark is an upscale shopping mall in the affluent SouthPark neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina. The mall is located approximately five miles (8 km) south of Uptown Charlotte, at the corner of Sharon and Fairview Roads. With 1,688,480 square feet (160,000 m2), It is one of the most profitable malls in the country with sales at over $700 per square foot. It is the 10th largest on the East Coast and is the 28th largest in the United States. SouthPark is the most congested shopping area in the United States during Black Friday weekend. The mall is visited by more than 12 million visitors a year.
The Streets at Southpoint is a shopping mall in Durham, North Carolina. Located near I-40, on Fayetteville Road, the mall was developed by Urban Retail Properties and is currently owned and managed by Brookfield Properties, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management. The Streets at Southpoint opened in 2002. The mall features the traditional retailers Nordstrom, Macy's, Belk, and J. C. Penney, in addition to a 17-screen AMC Theatres and IMAX.

Springdale Mall is a shopping center located in Mobile, Alabama, United States, directly across from Bel Air Mall. Opened in 1959 as an open-air shopping center, Springdale Mall was later redeveloped as an enclosed shopping center. Facing competition from larger shopping centers in the area, Springdale was demolished in stages in the 2000s, with most of the former enclosed mall being replaced with big-box stores.
The Avenues is a two-level regional shopping mall located on the southside of Jacksonville, Florida, and opened in 1990 on the Interstate 95 corridor, and is off exit 339 at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Southside Boulevard. The mall, managed by Simon Property Group, which manages 25% of it, has a parking deck on the northwestern side. Its anchor stores are Belk, Dillard's, Forever 21, and JCPenney. Other stores located at the mall include Aldo, H&M, LOFT, BoxLunch, Build-A-Bear Workshop, MAC, LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, Pandora, and Le Macaron French Pastries.

Chapel Hills Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States, with 562,733 square feet (52,280 m2) of gross leasable area. The anchor stores are AMC Theatres, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dillard's, H&M, and Macy's. There are two vacant anchor stores that Burlington and Gordmans occupied before closing.
Lynnhaven Mall is an enclosed super-regional shopping mall in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA. It opened in August 1981. At 1,170,000 square feet (109,000 m2) of gross leasable area, it is the largest mall in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of southeastern Virginia and one of the largest malls on the East Coast. The mall contains more than 180 stores, including Dillard's, JCPenney, and Macy's as main anchor stores. Other stores and junior anchors at the mall include Apple, Barnes & Noble, Dick's Sporting Goods, L.L. Bean, XXI Forever, H&M, and Old Navy. Dave & Busters is also a recent addition to the mall and region. An 18 screen AMC Theatres complex anchors an open-air pedestrian plaza. Richland Mall was an enclosed shopping mall near the intersection of Forest Drive and Beltline Blvd in Forest Acres, South Carolina within the greater Columbia Metropolitan Area. The interior mall space has been closed to the public since early 2022. However, its last anchor store, Belk, continued to operate until early September 2023. A Barnes & Noble continued to operate as a junior anchor with its own exterior access until December 31, 2023. There are two additional empty anchor stores that have both been largely vacant since the late 2000s. The mall's last inline tenant, Columbia Children's Theatre, moved out on February 1, 2023. The mall has never received a major renovation and has an ornate late 1980s-early 1990s interior aesthetic.
Macon Mall is a two-level, 1.1-million-square-foot shopping mall located in Macon, Georgia. It is a dead mall with a 74% and rising vacancy rate with only one anchor store, Burlington. It has three vacant anchors left by Belk, J.C. Penney and Macy's. Sears once occupied the space currently taken by Burlington. The lower level is still empty.
The Shoppes at Bel Air, formerly Bel Air Mall, is a super-regional shopping mall, located in Mobile, Alabama, United States. The mall has a gross leasable area of 1,345,000 sq ft (125,000 m2). It is the oldest continuously operating enclosed super-regional mall in Alabama and serves as one of the primary retail venues for the west Mobile shopping district located at the vicinity of Airport Boulevard and Interstate 65. Currently, Belk, Dillard's, JCPenney, Surge Entertainment Center by Drew Brees, and Target serve as the mall's anchor stores; the mall also features more than 130 stores and restaurants.
The Centre of Tallahassee, formerly Tallahassee Mall, is a local semi-enclosed mixed-use shopping, entertainment, and work office complex located at the intersection of North Monroe Street and John Knox Road in Tallahassee, Florida. Since the official close of the faltering Northwood Mall in 1986, The Tallahassee Mall became the older of two surviving enclosed malls in the Tallahassee area, the other being Governor's Square.

Auburn Mall is a regional shopping mall located in Auburn, Alabama, United States, and combines traditional mall shopping with village streetscape shopping. The mall has a gross leasable area of 527,000 square feet (49,000 m2). The two main department stores, Belk and Dillard's, are supplemented by more than 50 specialty stores. Colonial Plaza is a shopping mall in Orlando, Florida, United States. Opened in 1956, it was the largest retail development in the state of Florida at the time of its construction. The original complex included two supermarkets and two variety stores, plus a Belk department store. It underwent multiple expansions in its history, the first of which added a Jordan Marsh department store and an enclosed mall concourse. Further expansion in 1973 added a second enclosed wing and a relocation of Belk, while Ivey's was added in 1983 and sold to Dillard's in 1990.
