Unprecedented is a 2022 American-British documentary television miniseries revolving around the 2020 US presidential election, which premiered on July 10, 2022, on Discovery+. [1] [2]
The documentary series includes previously unreleased footage [3] of the Trump family on the campaign trail and their reactions to the outcome of the election. The Trumps did not request contractual right of control. [4] It is said to offer intimate and unprecedented interviews with Trump, his family and others who were in the White House. [5] The documentary series follows the last months of the presidency of Donald Trump. The series is shown in three parts [6] and features interviews with President Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Eric Trump, and Vice President Mike Pence. [6] Footage was recorded at the White House, at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, and events of the Trump's presidential re-election campaign. [6]
The events of the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, from the White House were filmed by Holder. [7]
According to Holder, the idea behind the film was to find out who the Trumps were by way of the re-election campaign, and it ended up documenting the family’s “Succession-type vibe”. [8]
Holder worked on a movie about Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign and the aftermath for about two years. [8]
The footage was shot at the White House, Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort and on the campaign trail during the last months of the Trump presidency. It also includes a full view of the riot at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. [9] It was recorded for the documentary series in the last weeks of 2020 and the first weeks of 2021. [6]
The film was released in the United States on July 10, 2022. It premiered in Australia on July 11 and in Germany on July 15.
In interview to The Hollywood Reporter, the director mentioned he now has security guards:
On Monday of last week, I had 112 followers on Twitter, the majority of them were probably my family, and now there’s just under 40,000… People are talking about me on TV shows. Yeah, I mean, it’s obviously crazy and there’s obviously people who, without having seen the series, have come to a conclusion about my position. [8]

The Trump fake electors plot was a scheme to submit fraudulent certificates of ascertainment to falsely claim U.S. president Donald Trump had won the electoral college vote in certain states, following Trump's loss in the 2020 United States presidential election. After the results of the 2020 election determined Trump had lost, the scheme was devised by him, his associates, and Republican Party officials in seven states, and it formed a significant part of attempts to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election made by Trump and his associates. The intent of the scheme was to pass the fraudulent certificates to then-vice president Mike Pence in the hope he would count them, rather than the authentic certificates, and thus overturn Joe Biden's victory. This scheme was defended by a fringe legal theory developed by Trump attorneys Kenneth Chesebro and John Eastman, detailed in the Eastman memos, which claimed a vice president has the constitutional discretion to swap official electors with an alternate slate during the certification process, thus changing the outcome of the electoral college vote and the overall winner of the presidential race. The scheme came to be known as the Pence Card. By June 2024, dozens of Republican state officials and Trump associates had been indicted in four states for their alleged involvement. The federal Smith special counsel investigation is investigating Trump's role in the events. According to testimony Trump was aware of the fake electors scheme, and knew that Eastman's plan for Pence to obstruct the certification of electoral votes was a violation of the Electoral Count Act.
The United States Justice Department investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election began in early 2021 with investigations and prosecutions of hundreds of individuals who participated in the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol. By early 2022, the investigation had expanded to examine Donald Trump's inner circle, with the Justice Department impaneling several federal grand juries to investigate the attempts to overturn the election. Later in 2022, a special counsel was appointed. On August 1, 2023, Trump was indicted. The indictment also describes six alleged co-conspirators.
An ongoing special counsel investigation was opened by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on November 18, 2022, to continue two investigations initiated by the Justice Department (DOJ) regarding former U.S. President Donald Trump. Garland appointed Jack Smith, a longtime federal prosecutor, to lead the independent investigations. Smith was tasked with investigating Trump's role in the January 6 United States Capitol attack and Trump's mishandling of government records, including classified documents.
