Uriash Puqiqnak,CM (born April 15,1946) is an experienced soapstone carver and former territorial and municipal level politician in Canada. He served as Mayor of Gjoa Haven,Nunavut and was a member of the Nunavut Legislature from 1999 until 2004. [1] Uriash Puqiqnak briefly served as acting speaker in 2000 after Levi Barnabas' resignation. [2]
Puqiqnak is a famous soapstone carver,his works are on display all over Canada. He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada on July 29,2005. [3] His work is also featured in Keeping our Stories Alive:The Sculpture of Canada's Inuit along with the work of Ovilu Tunnillie and Lucy Meeko. [4]
Puqiqnak began his political career when he was elected mayor of Gjoa Haven,Nunavut.
Puqiqnak was elected to the Nunavut Legislature in the 1999 Nunavut general election. He won the Nattilik electoral district,defeating five other candidates in a hotly contested race with nearly 26% of the popular vote. [5] During his time in office,he pushed the territorial government to develop better programs to promote home grown intuit art and discourage counterfeit carving from entering the marketplace. [6]
He would only serve for one term as in the legislative assembly and chose not to run for re-election when it was dissolved in 2004. He left politics to spend more time with his family. [5]
Despite leaving politics,Puqiqnak is still involved in community service. He currently serves as a member of the Nunavut Tourism Board and is chair of Parks Canada History steering committee. [3]

Leona Aglukkaq is a Canadian politician. She was a member of the non-partisan Legislative Assembly of Nunavut representing the riding of Nattilik from 2004 until stepping down in 2008;then was a Conservative Member of Parliament representing the riding of Nunavut after winning the seat in the 2008 federal election. She was the first Conservative to win the seat,and only the second centre-right candidate ever to win it. Leona Aglukkaq is the first Inuk woman to serve in cabinet. She remained an MP until she was defeated in the 2015 federal election by Liberal candidate Hunter Tootoo. Aglukkaq unsuccessfully contested the 2019 federal election.

Asger Rye "Red" Pedersen is a former territorial-level Canadian politician. In 1953,he got a job in the Canadian Arctic with the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) at Cambridge Bay,Nunavut. In the following year,he was sent to Perry River (Kuugjuak) to assist Stephen Angulalik,the Ahiarmiut Inuit owner of the trading post,with the financial records,inventory and ordering,as Angulalik spoke no English. In 1957,Angulalik sold the Perry River post to the HBC and Pedersen was appointed manager. Angulalik returned to the post after resolving legal problems and worked alongside Pedersen;they became lifelong friends. He was,at one time,married to Lena Pedersen and their grandson,Calvin Pedersen was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in July 2020.

Jeannie Ugyuk is a Canadian Inuk politician,who was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Nattilik in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2010 by-election. At that time the riding of Nattilik encompassed the communities of Gjoa Haven and Taloyoak,Nunavut. She became the second woman,along with Premier Eva Aariak,to sit in the 3rd Nunavut Legislature.

Lucy Meeko (1929-2004) was an Inuit artist known for her multidisciplinary work in sculpture,printmaking,basketry and sewing. Meeko was born in Kuujjuaraapik,Quebec. Her career as a sculptor began in the 1950s;in the 1970s,together with her husband Noah,she created engravings for the Kuujjuarapic Cooperative.
Simonie Michael was a Canadian politician from the eastern Northwest Territories who was the first Inuk elected to a legislature in Canada. Before becoming involved in politics,Michael worked as a carpenter and business owner,and was one of very few translators between Inuktitut and English.
