Nattilik[ pronunciation? ] was a territorial electoral district (riding) for the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, Canada.

Contents

The riding consisted of the communities of Gjoa Haven and Taloyoak. Gjoa Haven is now a part of the Gjoa Haven riding and Taloyoak is a part of the Netsilik riding.

The seat became vacant as of 22 February due to the resignation of former Member of the Legislative Assembly, Enuk Pauloosie. Clerk of the assembly, John Quirke, said that a by-election must be held within six months. [1] [2] A by-election was held 26 April 2010, with Jeannie Ugyuk winning the seat. [3]

Leona Aglukkaq is a Canadian politician. She was a member of the non-partisan Legislative Assembly of Nunavut representing the riding of Nattilik from 2004 until stepping down in 2008; then was a Conservative Member of Parliament representing the riding of Nunavut after winning the seat in the 2008 federal election. She was the first Conservative to win the seat, and only the second centre-right candidate ever to win it. Leona Aglukkaq is the first Inuk woman to serve in cabinet. She remained an MP until she was defeated in the 2015 federal election by Liberal candidate Hunter Tootoo. Aglukkaq unsuccessfully contested the 2019 federal election.

He served as Mayor of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut and was a member of the Nunavut Legislature from 1999 until 2004. Uriash Puqiqnak briefly served as acting speaker in 2000 after Levi Barnabas' resignation.

William Lyall, known as Bill Lyall, of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada, was a territorial politician. Lyall was elected to the 8th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly in the 1975 election.

Enuk Pauloosie is an Inuk Canadian, a former politician who was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Nattilik in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2008 territorial election. His, now defunct, riding of Nattilik encompassed the communities of Gjoa Haven and Taloyoak, Nunavut.

Jeannie Ugyuk is a Canadian politician, who was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Nattilik in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2010 by-election. At that time the riding of Nattilik encompassed the communities of Gjoa Haven and Taloyoak, Nunavut. She became the second woman, along with Premier Eva Aariak, to sit in the 3rd Nunavut Legislature.

The 4th Nunavut Legislature began after the 2013 general election on October 29. The election returned 20 of the 22 non-partisan members, with the results in two seats pending judicial recounts or follow-up by-elections due to a tied result on election day. After the official recount held November 5, 2013, the district of Rankin Inlet South was found to be still tied and Uqqummiut was won by two votes.

Tony Akoak is a Canadian politician, who is the 12th and current Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2013 election. He represents the electoral district of Gjoa Haven.
