VAT Theatre (Estonian : VAT Teater) is an Estonian theatre which is located in Tallinn, Estonia.
The theatre was established on 1 October 1987. At that time, the theatre was unique in Estonian SSR, because all other theatres were nationalized. There are several explanations for the acronym VAT, e.g. in Estonian these are: Väike Aga Tubli, Väga Akadeemiline Tallinna Teater, Volli, Aare ja Teised, Vängete Aumärkidega Tunnustamata, Väga Armas Teater. [1] The first head of the theatre was Peeter Jalakas. [2]
The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets is a self-billed "musical fable" in the avant-garde tradition created through the collaboration of theatre director Robert Wilson, musician Tom Waits and writer William S. Burroughs. Wilson, in the original production, was largely responsible for the design and direction. Burroughs wrote the book, while Waits wrote the music and most of the lyrics. The project began in about 1988 when Wilson approached Waits. The story is based on the German folktale "Der Freischütz", which had previously adapted as an opera by Carl Maria von Weber. It premiered at Hamburg's Thalia Theatre on 31 March 1990, and was performed at Paris's Théâtre du Châtelet on 9 October 1990. November Theatre produced its world English-language premiere in 1998 at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival in Canada. Det Norske Teatret in Oslo staged a Norwegian (Nynorsk) version in 1998, with Lasse Kolsrud as Pegleg. Only the dialogue was translated by the dramaturg and key collaborator of the entire creative process, Wolfgang Wiens; the songs were performed in English.
Estonia was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 with the song "Nagu merelaine", composed by Ivar Must, with lyrics by Leelo Tungal, and performed by Silvi Vrait. The Estonian participating broadcaster, Eesti Televisioon (ETV), organised the national final Eurolaul '94 in order to select its entry for the contest. Ten songs competed in the national final and "Nagu merelaine" performed by Silvi Vrait was selected as the winner by a jury panel. This was the first-ever entry from Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest, and the first-ever entry performed in Estonian in the contest.
The theatre of Estonia dates back to 1784, when August von Kotzebue founded an amateur theatre company in Tallinn. Most of the plays at the time were comedies for the amusement for local Baltic German nobility. In 1809 a professional theatre company was established, with its own building in Tallinn, the Tallinna saksa teater. The repertoire was mostly in German but plays in Estonian and Russian were also performed.
