The Vanderbilt Indoor Open [1] was a men's and women's open international indoor clay court then later hard court tennis tournament founded in 1967 as the New York Vanderbilt Indoor. [2] It was organised by the Vanderbilt International Racket Club (f.1966) [3] and played at Grand Central Terminal, New York City, United States until 1970. This international tournament was part of the ILTF World Circuit, until 1970 when it was discontinued. [2]

History

In the early 1960s CBS had an empty recording studio on the third floor of the Grand Central Terminal, New York City, United States. In 1966 a Hungarian immigrant businessman took over the floor lease and established private members fitness center called the Vanderbilt Athletic Club that featured two indoor clay courts, [4] Tennis Club. In 1967 the managed by the Vanderbilt International Racket Club organised its first indoor tennis tournament. [5] [2] In 1968 the men's event was known as the New York Indoor Invitation. [2] In 1970 a women's tournament was staged called the Vanderbilt Indoor Open also known as the Ladies World Invitational. [2] The tournament at this location was discontinued.

It was held in South Orange, New Jersey in the United States and played on outdoor grass courts from 1970 to 1974, and then played on outdoor clay courts from 1975 to 1983. There were men's and women's singles tournaments as well as men's, women's, and mixed doubles.

The Carolinas International Tennis Tournament, also known by its sponsored name North Carolina National Bank Tennis Classic, was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1969 as the Carolinas Invitation and played at the Julian J. Clark Tennis Stadium on the grounds of the Olde Providence Racquet Club in Charlotte, North Carolina from 1971 through 1977. The inaugural edition was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit while the following editions were part of the World Championship Tennis (WCT) circuit. The St. Petersburg Masters Invitational was a ILTF Circuit affiliated combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1953 as the Masters Invitational in St Augustine, Florida. In 1954 that event moved to Jacksonville, Florida until 1959. In 1960 the event moved to St Petersburg. It remained at the former location until 1971. After the men's event St Petersburg Masters Invitational was discontinued in 1971 the women's event continued as the Virginia Slims Masters St Petersburg. In 1974 the mens tournament was revived as St. Petersburg WCT until 1975 when it was abolished. the women's tournament continued under various brand names and at various locations in the Tampa Bay Area until it was discontinued in 1990.

The New York Tennis Club Open was an open clay court tennis competition founded in 1886 as the New York Lawn Tennis Club Amateur Tournament. The tournament was usually held in early Autumn. The event was played at the New York Lawn Tennis Club, New York City, United States and was discontinued in 1917.
