Vantage Point is the second studio album released by New Zealand band Sons of Zion. It was released in May 2018, after the band's song "Drift Away" became a hit in New Zealand earlier that year. The album debuted at number 18 in New Zealand and was a sleeper hit, becoming platinum certified in New Zealand two years later.
By 2015, Sons of Zion's line-up stabilised, after bassist Dylan Stewart left and Caleb Haapu of the band L40 joined. Over the course of 2015 and 2016, the band released several one-off singles, "I'm Ready" (2015), "Fill Me Up" (2015), "Hungover" (2016) and "Now" (2016), after noticing a shift away from album-focused music to individual tracks as streaming became more popular. [1] While the band actively toured globally, members of the band felt that Sons of Zion lacked as clear a direction, which led to a reduced musical output. [1]
Recording for Vantage Point began three years before its release, and it was the band's first album in five years. [2] The band constructed their own studio, No Filter Studios, and bandmember Matthew Sadgrove began working more actively as a music producer, working with groups such as Maimoa, producing their song "Wairua" (2017). [1]
On 28 July 2017, the band released The Jukebox Suite, an extended play that compiled songs that the band were unsure would fit with the sound of their upcoming album. [3] [4] The EP was musically different to the band's previous output, focusing on pop and soul music. [1] "Is That Enough", a duet with New Zealand R&B singer Aaradhna, was released as single a week prior to the album's release, [5] and was a commercial success in New Zealand, becoming one of the top 20 biggest songs of the year by a New Zealand artist for both 2017 and 2018. [6] [7] "Is That Enough" and another song from the EP, "In the Sky", were both included on Vantage Point.
Before the release of Vantage Point, the members of Sons of Zion decided to quit their jobs to focus solely on releasing music. [1] The album featured a single of genres, including rock and pop inspired songs in addition to their typical reggae sound. [1]
"Drift Away" was released as the second single from the album in March 2018. While the band were unsure how an acoustic pop song would perform on New Zealand radio, [8] the song was a success, becoming the band's best performing single to date. [9] The album was released two months later on 11 May 2018. The iTunes version of the album compiled three additional songs as bonus tracks, "Fill Me Up", "I'm Ready" and "Now" featuring Slip-On Studio, [10] all of which had been released as singles in 2015 or 2016.
The band promoted the album with a world tour beginning in June 2018, followed by a New Zealand tour in August. [9] "So Bright" was released as a single in August coinciding with the start of their domestic New Zealand tour, [2] and ended the year by releasing "Leave with Me" as a single in November. [11]
Anzel Singh of NZ Musician reviewed the album positively, describing the work as channelling "warm feelings of being in the sun and on top of the world", while feeling that Sons Of Zion "stay true to the tone of the record which embodies living life to the fullest and making it an adventure". [12] Shelleysketch of muzic.net.nz described the album as "vocally very strong", feeling that the R&B and soul-inspired vocals created a "smooth relaxing flow" throughout the album. [13]
The album debuted at 18 on the New Zealand albums charts, and only spent one week in the top 40 albums chart. [14] The album also debuted at number nine in the United States on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. [15] Despite the album's slower initial success in New Zealand, Vantage Point performed well over time; becoming one of the top performing albums by a New Zealand artist for 2018, [16] 2019 [17] and 2020. [18] Vantage Point was certified gold in March 2019, [19] and a platinum certification in May 2020. [20]

Neil Mullane Finn is a New Zealand singer-songwriter and musician. He is best known for being a principal member of Split Enz, of which he shared lead duties with his brother Tim, and the lead singer, guitarist, and a founding member of Crowded House. He was also a member of Fleetwood Mac from 2018 until 2022. Ed O'Brien of Radiohead has hailed Finn as popular music's "most prolific writer of great songs".
Brooke Gabrielle Ligertwood, professionally known as Brooke Fraser, is a New Zealand singer and songwriter. After signing with Sony BMG in 2002, she gained recognition for her debut album, What to Do with Daylight (2003) and followed with Albertine (2006) and Flags (2010). All three debuted at number one on the RMNZ chart and gained her the number one single "Something in the Water". She later released Brutal Romantic (2014), various compilation albums, the live album Seven (2022) and Eight (2023). The latter two were released by Capitol CMG under her married name, Brooke Ligertwood.
Aaradhna Jayantilal Patel, better known by the mononym Aaradhna, is a New Zealand singer, songwriter, and musical recording artist. She made her musical debut in 2004 featuring on the single "Getting Stronger" with the group Adeaze which peaked at number one on the official New Zealand Singles Chart.
"Slice of Heaven" is a single by New Zealand singer-songwriter Dave Dobbyn with the band Herbs, released in 1986 on the soundtrack of the animated motion picture, Footrot Flats: The Dog's Tail Tale. The single reached No. 1 on the New Zealand Singles Chart for eight weeks and on the Australian Singles Chart for four weeks. It appears on Dobbyn's 1988 album, Loyal.
Virginia Claire Wigmore is a New Zealand singer and songwriter.
