Vara: A Blessing is a 2013 English drama film directed by Khyentse Norbu and starring Shahana Goswami, Devesh Ranjan, Mohamed Adamaly and Rohit Raj. It is first English-language feature film by Bhutanese film director, after The Cup (1999) and Travellers and Magicians (2003). [1] Based on a Bengali short story Rakta Aar Kanna (Blood and Tears) by Sunil Gangopadhyay, [2] about the daughter of a devadasi, who falls in love with a Muslim sculptor. [1] It was the opening film of 2013 Busan International Film Festival, where it received good reviews. [2] [3]

Sunil Gangopadhyay Bengali poet and author (1934–2012)

Sunil Gangopadhyay or Sunil Ganguly was an Indian poet, historian and novelist in the Bengali language based in the city of Kolkata. He is a former Sheriff of Calcutta. Gangopadhyay obtained his master's degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta. In 1953 he and a few of his friends started a Bengali poetry magazine, Krittibas. Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, also known as Khyentse Norbu, is a Tibetan/Bhutanese lama, filmmaker, and writer. His four major films are The Cup (1999), Travellers and Magicians (2003), Vara: A Blessing (2013), and Hema Hema: Sing Me a Song While I Wait (2017). He is the author of What Makes You Not a Buddhist (2007) and many other non-fiction works about Tibetan Buddhism.

The Busan International Film Festival, held annually in Haeundae-gu, Busan, South Korea, is one of the most significant film festivals in Asia. The first festival, held from 13 to 21 September 1996, was also the first international film festival in Korea. The main focus of the BIFF is to introduce new films and first-time directors, especially those from Asian countries. Another notable feature is the appeal of the festival to young people, both in terms of the large youthful audience it attracts and through its efforts to develop and promote young talent. The about 30,000 m2 Cinema Center includes a 4,000-seat outdoor theatre; four indoor screens under an LED-covered roof; media centre; archive space; and conference rooms; allowing the festival to include industry forums and educational activities.
