Vatanspor is an association football club based in Brabrand, Aarhus Denmark, that competes in the Danmarksserien, the four tier of the Danish football league system.

Founded in 1989, the club is affiliated to DBU Jutland, the regional football association. The team plays its home matches at Arena Vest Kunstgræsbane. The club was founded by Turkish immigrants and has advanced through the league system, currently playing in the fifth highest Danish league, Danmarksserien, after having spent some seasons in Denmark Series, the fourth division.

History

Vatanspor was founded by Mustafa Pelit, current chairman of the club, and a group of other young men with a Turkish background on Lottesvej 12, Brabrand in 1989. The intention of forming the club was keeping troubled youths away from the streets and at the same time uniting young people with an immigrant background in one team. [1]

In June 2011, in a Series 1 match against local rivals from Lystrup IF, a supporter from Vatanspor spat the match official in his face after the match, which had seen some questionable refereeing decisions. [2] As a result, the club was suspended by the Danish Football Union (DBU) in both league– and cup matches, a decision which was since overturned after a dialogue between all parties. [3] Vatanspor was, however, required to hire guards on matchdays. [3]

As of 2020, Vatanspor has five teams represented in the regional tiers of DBU Jutland, with its first team competing in the Jutland Series. In 2016, the club reached the Denmark Series, the fourth highest tier in Danish football, for the first time in its history after beating SSV Højfyn in play-offs. [4] [3] Thereby, Vatanspor became the only second immigrant club in Danish football history to reach that level after FK Prespa, a Copenhagen-based club with Macedonian roots achieved this feat in 1999. Vatanspor has around 100 members and has been represented by people with Danish, Turkish, Iranian, Iraqi, Sudanese, Somali, American, Faroese, Bosnian, Lebanese, Palestinian and Kurdish background. [1]

On 1 September 2022, Vatanspor faced Danish Superliga club AGF in the Danish Cup. The match was the focus of a political debate, as AGF had served kebab on Aarhus Stadium to accommodate the mainly Muslim fans of Vatanspor, a club founded by Turkish immigrants. This meant that right-wing Danish People's Party co-founder Pia Kjærsgaard attended the match. [5] [6]

The 1926–27 JBUs Mesterskabsrække was the 29th season of the Jutland Football Championship since its establishment in 1902, and the 5th season since the regional top-flight league was rebranded and reorganised from JBUs A-Række to the JBUs Mesterskabsrække. The season was launched on 12 September 1926 and concluded on 8 May 1927 with the final match of the regular league fixtures, while the two-legged championship play-off and the promotion/relegation play-off matches were held between 15 May and 12 June 1927. Horsens FS secured their second consecutive Jutland league championship and qualified for both the provincial semi-finals of the 1926–27 Landsfodboldturneringen and the group stage of the 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen. Horsens FS' reserve team were relegated and replaced by Kolding BK of the 1926–27 JBUs A-række, who had won the regional second-tier league championship. FC Djursland is an association football club based in the town of Grenaa, Denmark, that competes in the Jutland Series, the sixth tier of the Danish football league system. The Danish football league system, also known as the football league pyramid, refers to the hierarchically interconnected league structure for association football in Denmark, in which all divisions are bound together by the principle of promotion and relegation. Within men's association football, the top two professional levels contain one division each. Below this, the semi-professional and amateur levels have progressively more parallel divisions, which each cover progressively smaller geographic areas. The top four tiers are classed as nationwide, while the fifth tier and below are classed provincial leagues. Teams that finish at the top of their division at the end of each season can rise higher in the pyramid, while those that finish at the bottom find themselves sinking further down. In theory it is possible for even the lowest local amateur club to rise to the top of the system and become Danish football champions one day. The number of teams promoted and relegated between the divisions varies, and promotion to the upper levels of the pyramid is usually contingent on meeting additional criteria, especially concerning appropriate facilities and finances.

Vejlby-Risskov Idrætsklub, commonly known as VRI, is a sports club based in Risskov, Aarhus, Denmark. VRI is mostly known for its association football department, which competes in the Denmark Series, the fifth tier of the Danish football league system. The 1926 JBUs Pokalturnering was the 3rd edition of the regional tournament, JBUs Pokalturnering, the highest senior cup competition organised by the Jutland FA (JBU). The tournament was held in the third and fourth quarter of 1926 with Aalborg BK as the defending cup champions. The season was launched on 22 August 1926 with the first round, embraced five cup rounds and concluded on 21 November 1926 with the cup final. A total of 29 clubs participated in the cup tournament, which was the same number of teams as the previous season.

The 2022–23 Danish Cup, also known as Pokalen, was the 69th season of the Danish Cup competition. F.C. Copenhagen took the tournament, securing its 9th Cup with a 1–0 win over AaB and qualifying for the Europa Conference League second qualifying round.

Kasper Kure Vidkjær is a Danish former professional footballer who played as a centre-back. He was a product of the AGF academy and has also played for their senior team alongside his brother Anders. He also played for Brabrand and has represented Denmark at youth level.
