Rao Bahadur Sardar Veerabhadrappa Gunappa Desai was an Indian philanthropist, ruler of Chachadi princely state who had made significant contributions in social, religious, political, administrative, educational and literary fields. He was the 15 th Jagirdar of the Desai family. [2] [3] He was also a founder member of Karnatak Lingayat Education Society which was established on 11 October 1916. [4]

Early life

He was born on August 30, 1882. He faced many problems in his childhood because of which he could not get a proper education. He was the early ruler of a Desai's wade situated in Chachadi village of Saundatti taluk, Belagavi district. The wade was having an ownership over 33 villages. Even though he was not properly educated, he successfully ruled his province. [3]

Notable works

He established a primary school exclusively for girls in 1904, in order to encourage the education among girls. He also established an agricultural training school for the rural youths. [3]

Recognition

His great grandson Nagaraj Desai has set up the foundation named Sardar V G Desai Foundation Chachadi to promote Desai’s contributions. [2] [5]

Awards and honours

He was awarded with the titles Rao Bahadur and Sardar from the British government for his social work. [2]

Alluri Sitarama Raju was an Indian Freedom Fighter and revolutionary who waged an armed campaign against the British colonial rule in India. Born in present-day Andhra Pradesh, he was involved in opposing the British in response to the 1882 Madras Forest Act that effectively restricted the free movement of adivasis in their forest habitats and prevented them from practicing their traditional form of agriculture called 'podu', which threatened their very way of life. Rise in discontent towards the British colonial rule in the backdrop of the Non-cooperation movement (1920-1922) led to the Rampa rebellion (1922-1924) in which Alluri Sitarama Raju played the major role as its leader. Mustering combined forces of tribals and other sympathizers to the cause, he engaged in guerilla campaigns against the British forces across the border regions of present-day Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states in India. He was given the title "Manyam Veerudu" by the local people for his heroic exploits.

Shahu of the Bhonsle dynasty of Marathas was a Raja and the first Maharaja (1900–1922) of the Indian princely state of Kolhapur. Rajarshi Shahu was considered a true democrat and social reformer. Shahu Maharaj was an able ruler who was associated with many progressive policies during his rule. From his coronation in 1894 till his demise in 1922, he worked for the cause of the lower caste subjects in his state. Raja Lakhamagouda Sardesai (1864–1942) was an Indian philanthropist, first Barrister-at-Law from Karnataka and a ruler of Vantamuri princely state in Belagavi district. He was the 16th ruler of Vantamuri princely state. He ascended the throne at the age of 13 years in 1877. The princely state had a Wada at Vantamuri which was built by Prabhu Basavantrao and it was submerged in 1978-79 when a dam was constructed at Hidkal.

Lingayat Education Association is an education institution that was established by Rao Bahadur Gurusiddappa V. Gilaganchi and Rao Bahadur Rudragouda C. Aratal in 1883 at Dharwad.

Rao Bahadur Rudragouda Aratal was a Deputy Collector of Belgaum in the British Government. He is also a founder of KLE Society which was established in 1916. One of the revenue administrative report mentions Aratal in this way The entire credit of eradicating corruption from the Revenue department, goes to Rao Bahaddur R.C.Aratal
