Vera Hoffmann (born 2 November 1996) is a track and field athlete from Luxembourg who competes as a middle-distance runner. She is a national record holder and multiple-time national champion. [1]

Career

A dual-citizen of Germany and Luxembourg, she ran for ASV Cologne. She made her international debut at the 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow. [2] [3]

In August 2019, she finished second at the 2019 European Athletics Team Championships second division 1500 metres event in Croatia. [4]

In February 2023, Hoffmann won three events at the Luxembourg national championships, winning titles over 800m, 1500m and 3000m. In March 2023, Hoffmann finished eighth in the 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships – Women's 1500 metres in Istanbul. [5] In doing so, she became the first athlete from Luxembourg to advance to a European indoor final in any event. [6]

In June 2023, she finished second at the 2023 European Athletics Team Championships second division 1500 metres event in Silesia. [7] Hoffmann won a silver medal at the 2023 Summer World University Games in the 1500 metres in August 2023. [8] [9] Hoffmann competed at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest in the 1500 metres and recorded a time of 4:09.7676, coming within three seconds of surpassing her own national record. [10]

She was selected for the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow for the women's 1500 metres where she ran a season's best time of 4:15.52. [11] [12]

Sifan Hassan is an Ethiopian-born Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She is most recognized for her versatility in running championship and world leading performances in widely disparate distances. She completed an unprecedented triple at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, winning gold medals in both the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres and a bronze medal for the 1,500 metres. Hassan is the only athlete in Olympic history to win medals across a middle-distance event and both long-distance races in a single Games. She is only the second woman to complete an Olympic distance double.

Gudaf Tsegay Desta is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the current world record holder for 5,000 m (14:00.21), set at the 2023 final Diamond League event, the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Eugene is also where she won the World Athletics Championships on 5,000 m in 2022. At the World Athletics Championships, Tsegay also won the gold medal for 10,000 metres in 2023; a bronze for the 1,500 metres in 2019, and silver in 2022. She is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist in the women's 5,000 metres. She is a two-time World Indoor Championship 1,500 m medallist, claiming bronze in 2016 and gold in 2022. She is also the world indoor record holder for the 1,500 m, setting previously in this event world under-18 (current) and U20 (former) records.

Ciara Mageean is a middle-distance runner from Portaferry in Northern Ireland who specialises in the 1500 metres. She is a three-time European Athletics Championship medallist at the event, with bronze in 2016 and silver in 2022 outdoors, and bronze in 2019 indoors. Mageean also won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Jake Wightman is a British middle-distance runner who primarily competes in the 1500 metres. He won the gold medal at the 2022 World Championships, the first global gold in a middle distance event for a British male since Seb Coe's 1500 m title at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. At the European Athletics Championships, Wightman earned a bronze in 2018 and a silver for the 800 metres in 2022. He won bronze medals at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a Norwegian middle- and long-distance runner. Ingebrigtsen is the current world record holder for the indoor 1500 metres and the 2000 metres, and holds the world best time over the two mile distance. Ingebrigtsen is a two-time World champion, winning gold medals in the 5000 metres in 2022 and 2023 and a four-time European champion, winning gold medals in the 1500 m and 5000 m in 2018 and 2022. He also won a gold medal in the 1500 m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, setting an Olympic and European record. In addition to the 1500 m, Ingebrigtsen holds European records in the mile and 5000 m, and is one of only three men to run a sub-3:30 1500 m, sub-7:30 3000 m and a sub-12:50 5000 m.
