Veronika is a 2024 Swedish psychological thriller, crime drama television series, which was developed by Viaplay. It was streamed on Viaplay's Australian partners SBS On Demand from 1 March 2024 and across Europe on SkyShowtime from 24 March. Veronika had been due for streaming in Scandinavia from late 2023 but was delayed due to downsizing by Viaplay. The eight-episode series was created by Katja Juras and Anna Lindblom, who also co-wrote its screenplay. Veronika was directed by Jonas Alexander Arnby. The titular protagonist Veronika, portrayed by Alexandra Rapaport, is a small town policewoman, who has a pill addiction which suppresses her psychic visions. Her husband Tomas (Tobias Santelmann) is the local music teacher and primary carer for their children Liv (Sarah Rhodin  [ sv ]) and Simon (Eddie Eriksson Dominguez). When Veronika sees the dead boy Oskar's image, she begins to doubt her sanity. She finds a young woman, Hanna's corpse and assists in the associated murder investigation led by police detective Nassir (Arvin Kananian  [ sv ]).

Premise

Action is set in a fictitious central Swedish mining town of Älvsbruk, [1] c.2022. Policewoman Veronika has psychic visions but has suppressed them since childhood by taking prescription pills. Periodically her visions have provoked nightmares and traumatic breakdowns. When Veronika sees a dead boy, Oskar, in a river she believes its a hallucination. Her long-suffering husband, Tomas is frustrated by her apparent indifference to their family's problems with their son, Simon's attention-seeking behaviour and teenage daughter, Liv's misbehaviour when her swimming aspirations are thwarted. Veronika discovers Hanna's corpse and sees the young woman in a vision. Police detective Nassir works with Veronika on Hanna's murder case. Initially they consider popular ice hockey champion Alexander as their suspect. Alexander is arrested when his alibi proves falsified by his team and coach. Veronika begins to doubts Alexander's guilt when she has visions of another murdered young woman, Josefin. Josefin's case was closed earlier as a pedophile confessed to her murder. Veronika finds Hanna wore a butterfly necklace and kept a diary, which mentions another man, "T".

After being hypnotised, Veronika better remembers her father, Bengt, including his death. She tracks down her child psychologist who admits to being bribed by Veronika's mother, Ann-Charlotte to sedate her. Veronika's visions sharpen when she stops taking pills. She has a vision of Oskar losing his gumboot in the forest near Hanna's corpse location. After learning Josefin also wore a butterfly necklace, Veronika aligns the deaths of Oskar, Hanna and Josefin. They had occurred during the times that Veronika was hospitalised for her breakdowns. Ann-Charlotte and Tomas are worried that Veronika is heading toward another breakdown by delving into her past. Tomas confronts Veronika when he finds her unprofessional investigations at home. She explains having her psychic visions. Despite professing that he believes her, Tomas calls the hospital for assistance. Veronika drives off distraught, has another vision of Josefin and crashes into a tree. Suspecting attempted suicide, Veronika is committed to the psychiatric ward and sedated by hospital staff. She convinces Nassir to recover her material and to follow up on Oskar's gumboot, Hanna and Josefin's necklaces and Hanna's diary.

Viaplay Group's Filippa Wallestam announced the production of Veronika in September 2022 with its streaming proposed for late 2023 by Viaplay. [2] [3] The series was created by Katja Juras and Anna Lindblom ( Gåsmamman [2015]), [2] who also co-wrote the screenplay. Veronika is directed by Jonas Alexander Arnby ( War of the Worlds [2019]). [2] [4] Filming occurred in Dannemora, Gimo, Österbybruk and Gysinge. [1] [5] Its titular leading actress Alexandra Rapaport had been attracted to the project five years earlier, "It's a great script with a tone all of its own". [2] [4] It was streamed on Viaplay's Australian partners, SBS On Demand from 1 March 2024. [6] Due to Viaplay's downsizing during mid-2023 the project was acquired by SkyShowtime, [3] [7] [8] which streamed the eight-episode series across Europe from 24 March 2024. Julia recalls that Josefin contacted someone online. Tomas discovers Veronika's clandestine investigation. Nassir and Veronika interrogate Alexander. Alexander admits he had sex with Hanna, same day she disappeared. When Veronika asks, Alexander did not give Hanna any necklace. Nassir's annoyed by Veronika's questioning; sends her home. The Truth Will Out is a Swedish mystery-thriller TV series broadcast from 21 August 2018 on Kanal 5. It was created by Hans Jörnlind and Aron Levander, directed by Kjell-Åke Andersson and Lisa Farzaneh, produced by Søren Stærmose, and stars Robert Gustafsson in the lead role of police detective Peter Wendel. <i>Jordskott</i> Swedish television series

Jordskott is a Swedish TV thriller, crime drama series with fantasy elements. Police detective Eva Thörnblad investigates the disappearance of her daughter and other mysteries in her hometown of Silverhöjd. The title refers to jordskott, a fictional plant parasite, which enhances one's perceptions but feeds off the host's blood. The series was first broadcast by SVT in 2015 with ten episodes. Filming took place in Sala and Ragunda in mid-2014. The series then began broadcasting on ITV Encore in the UK on June 10, 2015, and on Canal+ Seriale in Poland on October 10, 2016.

Spring Tide is a Swedish television drama series. It had its premiere on 6 March 2016 on SVT. It was written by Rolf and Cilla Börjlind and is based on their crime novel of the same name published in 2012.

Babylon Berlin is a German neo-noir television series. Created, written, and directed by Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries, and Hendrik Handloegten, it is loosely based on novels by Volker Kutscher.

Cold Courage is an international crime-drama television series based on Vilpittömästi sinun, which is the first instalment of the Studio book series by Finnish writer Pekka Hiltunen. The book's English translation, Cold Courage, was published in 2013. All eight episodes of the TV series were available on Viaplay from 3 May 2020. It was co-written by David Joss Buckley and Brendan Foley while the directors were Agneta Fagerström Olsson and Kadir Ferati Balci. Most of the series is set in London, with additional scenes in Finland. The main protagonists are two Finnish women living in London: Pihla Viitala as Mari, who leads a clandestine group, The Studio and Sofia Pekkari as Lia, a graphic designer who is recruited by Mari to infiltrate a right wing political party. As well as United Kingdom and Finland, scenes were also shot in Belgium and Ireland.

Kunsthall Trondheim (KT) is a contemporary art institution in Trondheim, Norway. Located in a former firehall, KT opened in October 2016. Between 2013 and 2016, the Kunsthall was run as a preliminary project in a temporary space by former Director Helena Holmberg. Stefanie Hessler was Director from 2019 until 2022; Adam Kleinman has been the Director since 2023. The facility offers exhibitions and public programs.

Morden i Sandhamn is a Swedish television crime drama series. It is based on the book series of the same name by writer, Viveca Sten, with later seasons set in Sten's fictional universe. The series is broadcast on TV4, which has presented nine seasons from 20 December 2010. The series follows Nora Linde, a lawyer who owns a summer house on Sandhamn, and her assistance in solving various murders on or near that island. Portraying Nora's children, Simon and Anna, are real-life siblings, Lion Monn and Ping Monn, respectively. The first six seasons featured Thomas Andreasson of the Nacka police as the lead detective. From season seven, Alexander Forsman is the new lead detective.

Yellowjackets is an American thriller drama television series created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. It stars an ensemble cast led by Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Liv Hewson, and Courtney Eaton as a group of teenagers involved in a plane crash in 1996, with Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, Lauren Ambrose, and Simone Kessell playing their adult counterparts in 2021. Stella Blómkvist is an Icelandic crime television series which was first broadcast in 2017. It is produced by the Icelandic company Sagafilm. The show is loosely based on books of the same title by an anonymous Icelandic writer. The series was written by Jóhann Ævar Grímsson, Nanna Kristín Magnúsdóttir and Andri Óttarsson, and directed by Óskar Thór Axelsson.

The Machinery is a Swedish TV crime drama, which debuted on 24 May 2020 on Viaplay. It is directed by Richard Holm with the screenplay written by Peter Arrhenius, Niclas Ekström and Kjersti Ugelstad and co-created by Holm, Ekström and Ugelstad. The first season consists of eight episodes. Most of its action is set in September 2019 in Strömstad Sweden and Sandefjord Norway, flashbacks include scenes set in Mexico. The main protagonist Olle is investigated by police led by Nina for his involvement in a robbery-murder orchestrated by his first wife Monika. Olle's second wife Josefin is unaware of Olle's criminal past, while her financially desperate brother Palle works for Monika due to his debts to criminal biker Axel. Olle, Monika and Nina seek the stolen money. Monika is shot by Josefin but Olle takes the blame. Palle burns his own restaurant down for an insurance scam.

Stolen is a Swedish drama film directed by Elle Márjá Eira, in her feature directorial debut, based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Ann-Helén Laestadius. It was released on Netflix on 12 April 2024.

Jana: Marked for Life is a Swedish television crime drama and thriller developed by Viaplay. It appeared on Viaplay's Australian partners SBS On Demand from 6 March 2024. Initially scheduled for streaming in Europe by Viaplay in late 2023, but was cancelled due to the company's downsizing. Its European debut was postponed to 19 April 2024 after Prime Video Nordics picked up the series.
