Vijayachander, (born Vijayachander Telidevara), is an Indian actor, director and producer, known for his works in Telugu cinema, theatre, and television. [1] Regarded as one of the finest character actor's of Telugu cinema, Vijayachander has appeared in more than forty feature films in a variety of roles. [2]

Vijayachander is known for his path-breaking works in biographical films; He essayed Jesus of Nazareth in the 1978 film Karunamayudu which he produced, and won the Nandi Award for Best Feature Film; He then enacted his own maternal Grandfather Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu in the 1982 film Andhra Kesari for which he has received the state Nandi Special Jury Award. [3]

He then essayed Sai Baba of Shirdi in the 1986 classic Sri Shirdi Saibaba Mahathyam which was screened at the International Film Festival of India; In the same year, he appeared as saint Vemana in the super hit Vemana Charithra. [4] In 1989, he starred in the Maniratnam directed Romantic drama film, Geetanjali , which won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. He enacted the role of Kabir in the 2003 film Kabirdas. The 2006 Tamil film Veyil was screened at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival in the "Tous Les Cinemas Du Monde" section. He received positive reviews for his performance in the social problem film Virodhi, which was screened at the Indian panorama section of the 2012 International Film Festival of India. [5]

Personal life and family

He is the maternal grandson of brother of Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu. Yesteryear's Telugu film singer Tanguturi Suryakumari was his maternal aunt. [6] [7] [8]

Cinema

After a successful career in Telugu theatre, He made his acting debut in the film Sudigundalu (1967), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu for that year. [8] In 2007, he has donated land for old film artists and Movie Artists Association. [9]

Television

During 1996 to 1998, he was cast in a 50-episode serial titled Dayasagar, which was telecast on DD National. The series was also dubbed into Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and other languages. [10]

Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu was an Indian jurist, political leader, social reformer, and anti-colonial nationalist who served as the chief minister of the Madras Presidency. Prakasam subsequently became the first chief minister of the erstwhile Andhra State, created by the partition of Madras State along the linguistic lines. Prakasam was known as "Andhra Kesari" which translates to "Lion of Andhra". The Andhra Pradesh government issued G.O RT-2500 on 10 August 2014 declaring his birth anniversary a State holiday.

<i>Andhra Kesari</i> 1983 Indian film

Andhra Kesari is a 1983 Indian Telugu-language period biographical film written, directed, and produced by Vijayachander. The film is based on the life of Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, the first Chief Minister of Andhra State, popularly known by the epithet Andhra Kesari. It is a co-production between Vijayachander and the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Vijayachander plays the title character Prakasam Panthulu, and Murali Mohan plays Kandukuri Veeresalingam. The film touches upon his contributions to the Simon Go Back movement. It was released on 1 November 1983, the Andhra Pradesh State formation day. The film won two Nandi Awards - Best Child Actor for Master Harish and a Special Jury Award for Vijayachander.

Mandadi Prabhakar Reddy (1935–1997) was an Indian film character actor known for his works in Telugu cinema. He acted in over 472 films over three decades. He wrote stories for several acclaimed films, including Karthika Deepam. The "Dr. M Prabhakara Reddy Chalana Chitra Karmika Chitrapuri" in Manikonda, Hyderabad is named in honor of him. He won four Nandi Awards.

She was the niece of activist and politician Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, who served as the first chief minister of Andhra state and previously as the chief minister of Madras.

Sri Shirdi Saibaba Mahathyam is a 1986 Telugu-language musical biograhical film written and directed by K. Vasu, based on the life of Shirdi Sai Baba, who has preached and practiced Religious humanism. Vijayachander portrayed the role of Baba. The film was a blockbuster and remained a cult classic. The film ran for 175 days in 12 centers, was screened at the International Film Festival of India and the Moscow Film Festival. The soundtrack was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, with lyrics written by Acharya Aatreya, and received wide appreciation. The film was dubbed into Hindi as Shirdi Sai Baba Ki Kahani and into Tamil as Sri Shirdi Saibaba.

Shirdi Sai is a 2012 Indian Telugu-language biographical film, produced by A.Mahesh Reddy on AMR Sai Krupa Entertainments banner, directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. Starring Nagarjuna as the 19th-20th century spiritual guru Sai Baba of Shirdi who lived in western India, it is the cinematic depiction of some of his landmark life episodes, his teachings and his way of life. Music was composed by M. M. Keeravani. Shirdi Sai was released worldwide on 6 September 2012, and has received mixed to positive reviews while Nagarjuna received critical acclaim for his performance in the title role with most reviewers hailing this as one of his career best performances.
