Villars Institute is an international non-profit foundation and non-governmental organization (NGO) located in the Swiss Alps in Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. [1]

Contents

The nonprofit acts primarily as a community development organization with a focus on sustainability, systemic change, and the prevention of biodiversity loss. [2] [1] It actively promotes systems thinking as a key approach in achieving its goals. The foundation organizes events and sponsors experts, scientists and young adults globally to attend its conferences in Villars-sur-Ollon. [3]

The organization also sponsors musicians and filmmakers and collaborates with other nonprofits and universities. They state that interdisciplinary problems require inter-generational solutions. [1] [4] [5] [6]

History

Founding

The NGO is an independent charitable foundation supervised by the Swiss Federal Supervisory Authority for Foundations (ESA). [1] Villars Institute was founded by all of the board members and the executive director, Lee Howell, on January 15, 2022. Julia Marton Lefevre and David Gann were elected as the chair and vice-chair at that installation meeting.

In June 2022, they held the first Villars Symposium. In March, 2022, the group held the first Villars Institute Summit in conjunction with the World Economic Forum. [7]

Board members

  • Julia Marton-Lefèvre Co-founder and Chair of Villars Institute. She is the former Director General of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in Switzerland and former Rector of the United Nations affiliated University for Peace in Costa Rica. Julia Marton-Lefevre is an active participant in the climatology and ecology communities, and worked with young adults at the symposium in 2022 and 2023. [8] [9]
  • David Gann, Co-founder and Trustee - Chairman of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Development and External Affairs at Oxford University, Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Saïd Business School, and a Fellow of Magdalen College. [10]
  • Lee Howell, Executive Director - He is the former Managing Director of the World Economic Forum, [11] and a member of the Board of Trustees at EAT. [12]
  • Keith Tuffley, Director - Global Co-Head of the Sustainability & Corporate Transition Group at Citi, founder of the Climate Leaders Coalition. [13] [14] [4] [15]
  • Suzan Craig, Board Member - Founder and CEO of Tahi Ecological Reserve in New Zealand, winner of New Zealand’s Restoring Nature Award in 2020 and 2021. [16] [17]
  • Richard McDonald, Board Member - former Headmaster and Executive Director of Aiglon College in Villar-sur-Ollon, and former member of the global Board of Trustees of Round Square. [18]

Purpose

Villars Institute states that its intent is “to accelerate the transition to a net zero economy and restore the health of the planet for all of its inhabitants.” [19] They primarily do community development and sponsor relevant organizations, events, and research for sustainable systems and climate change.

Events

The organization hosts and co-hosts different events. The two main annual events are The Villars Symposium and the Villars Summit. [20] [21] Various NGOs, Non-profit organizations, and charitable foundations attend. Academic scholars and prominent figures in the fields of emerging technology, sustainable development, education, and data analysis, as well as sponsored young students are invited to attend. [22]

In March, 2022, the group held the first Villars Institute Summit in conjunction with the World Economic Forum. Professor Tim Flannery spoke at this event. [21]

In June 2022, the organization held the first Villars Symposium. They hosted 228 participants, inviting prominent figures in the sustainability community and young adults, among them recipients of the Earth Prize, as part of their mission to develop intergenerationality to learn from established members of the current global sustainability and climate change community. Johan Rockstrom was the first distinguished lecture.

In September 2023, the nonprofit held the Nature Restoration Roundtable. Members of the "Remaking the Global Trading System for a Sustainable Future Project", a project founded by several Yale faculty members in collaboration with other universities, released a whitepaper analyzing global sustainable systems called the Villars Framework for a Sustainable Global Trade System. Partners

The NGO collaborates with many organizations with similar missions. In 2022, the Earth Foundation coordinated with Villars Institute to invite winners of the Earth Prize to the Villars Symposium. The Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipation (GESDA), the Earth Foundation, the World Economic Forum, and other organizations partnered with Villars Institute in 2023. [23]

Cultural pursuits

The Villars Institute funds artistic and cultural organizations that are in line with their mission. Among these are the Festival International du Film Alpin des Diablerets, ArtTech Foundation, Villars Music Academy, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the film Undaunted South Pole 2023. [5] [39] [29]

Montreux Jazz Festival

On February 11 to April 1, 2023, The Villars Institute sponsored the Montreux Jazz Festival’s Spotlight Concerts at the Villars Alpine Resort in the Vaud Alps. [32] [39] English singer Cherise, UK singer Debbie Ehirim, Belgian Singer Mentissa, indie pop artist Flowerovlove, French alt-pop artist Aime Simone, and Scottish soul-pop singer Joesef. [32]

The Villars Music Academy

The institute supported the Villars Music Academy, an activity program founded by Villars Institute and founded by Aline Champion from the Berlin Philharmoniker. [39] [40] [6] They select talented musicians annually for masterclasses, interdisciplinary courses, a conference, workshops, and a concert at the Villars Palace Hotel. [39]

Undaunted - South Pole 2023

In 2023, the Villars Institute supported the film Undaunted - South Pole 2023, which chronicled the expedition of British adventurer Robert Swan. [5]

Notable speakers

Polar explorer Robert Swan was a guest speaker at the 2022 Villars Symposium.

Professor Tim Flannery was the head speaker at the Villars Summit in 2023. [24]

At the World Economic Forum’s 2023 meeting in Davos, climate activist Jade Hameister reviewed the initial findings of the Villars Institute’s Global Issues Survey on behalf of Villars Institute. [20]

Business also plays a key role in the mitigation of climate change, through decisions to invest in researching and implementing new energy technologies and energy efficiency measures.

C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group is a group of 96 cities around the world that represents one twelfth of the world's population and one quarter of the global economy. Created and led by cities, C40 is focused on fighting the climate crisis and driving urban action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks, while increasing the health, wellbeing and economic opportunities of urban residents.

The Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) was a yearly report published by the World Economic Forum. Between 2004 and 2020, the Global Competitiveness Report ranked countries based on the Global Competitiveness Index, developed by Xavier Sala-i-Martin and Elsa V. Artadi. Before that, the macroeconomic ranks were based on Jeffrey Sachs's Growth Development Index and the microeconomic ranks were based on Michael Porter's Business Competitiveness Index. The Global Competitiveness Index integrates the macroeconomic and the micro/business aspects of competitiveness into a single index.

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is an independent policy research institute whose stated mission is to "build a fairer, more sustainable world, using evidence, action and influence in partnership with others." Its director is Dr Tom Mitchell.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Global Green USA</span>

Global Green is the English-American affiliate of Green Cross International, an international non-governmental organization founded by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993 to "foster a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future." Green Cross International operates in over 30 countries and enjoys consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Global Green USA is on a 10 year mission to "lead a global response to keep us within planetary boundaries" and to "bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace". GCI is an admitted observer organization with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. It also cooperates directly with the UNEP/OCHA Environmental Emergencies Section, UN-HABITAT and other international organizations. Celebrity advocates include Leonardo DiCaprio, Yoko Ono and Pat Mitchell, who serves as an Honorary Board Member.

Julia Marton-Lefèvre is a French - US environmentalist and academic. She studied history, ecology and environmental planning in the US and in France, and was born in Hungary.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">World Health Summit</span> International conference

The World Health Summit is an international conference that has been held in Berlin every October since 2009. It has developed into one of the world's leading global health conferences. It was held for the first time on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Charité. 2,500 experts from around 100 countries from science, business, politics and civil society discussed the most important issues of global health care and made recommendations. The academic backbone of the event is the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies. From the very beginning, the World Health Summit has been under the patronage of the German Chancellor and the French President. Since 2019, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) has also been a patron of the World Health Summit.

The Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development (ICSD), is a nonprofit organization, founded and directed by Rabbi Yonatan Neril in 2010. Based in Jerusalem, ICSD connects religion and ecology and mobilizes faith communities to act. ICSD's director has spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos, multiple UN climate conferences, and the Parliament of World Religions.

The 2016 United Nations Climate Change Conference was an international meeting of political leaders and activists to discuss environmental issues. It was held in Marrakech, Morocco, on 7–18 November 2016. The conference incorporated the twenty-second Conference of the Parties (COP22), the twelfth meeting of the parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP12), and the first meeting of the parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA1). The purpose of the conference was to discuss and implement plans about combatting climate change and to "[demonstrate] to the world that the implementation of the Paris Agreement is underway". Participants work together to come up with global solutions to climate change.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Global Changemakers</span>

Global Changemakers is an international youth organisation with headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. To date, they have directly trained over 1000 young people and provided grants to 450 youth-led projects in over 128 countries.

Miniya Chatterji is a prominent Dubai based business woman and a globally acclaimed sustainability leader. She is the CEO of Sustain Labs Paris. Sustain Labs Paris is an enterprise based in India, UAE, and New Zealand that builds large sustainability focused ventures.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jane Burston</span>

Jane Burston is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Clean Air Fund, a philanthropic foundation tackling global air pollution that was launched at the UN Secretary General's Climate Summit in New York with $50m from 6 core funders. Previously, Jane was the Head of Energy and the Environment at the National Physical Laboratory.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Global Goals Week</span> Event for awareness for Sustainable Development Goals

Global Goals Week is a shared commitment between a coalition of over 160 partners across all industries, which mobilizes annually in September to bring together communities, demand urgency, and supercharge solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was founded in 2016 by the United Nations Foundation, Project Everyone, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is timed to coincide with the UN General Assembly "High-Level Week" in New York. The week includes events, summits, conferences, forums, workshops, pledges, and other activations in New York, around the world, and online. It usually runs alongside Climate Week NYC, the annual conference of Goalkeepers, Bloomberg Global Business Forum and many other high-level events.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Aliza Ayaz</span> Climate activist

Aliza Ayaz is an international climate activist, business and sustainability consultant and a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. She jointly won the United Kingdom Youth Outstanding Commitment to Sustainability Award at University College London (UCL), and has spoken at United Nations, London International Model United Nations, and UK Parliamentary events. She is a member of the National Youth Council Pakistan. She is known for setting up the Climate Action Society at UCL which helped inspire UK-wide youth action against climate change, leading to the climate emergency declaration at the UK Parliament. In October 2020 she was appointed as the United Nations youth ambassador for Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG13), the second Pakistani student after Malala Yousafzai to have received this honour.

The Great Reset Initiative is an economic recovery plan drawn up by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was launched in June 2020, and a video featuring the then-Prince of Wales Charles was released to mark its launch. The initiative's stated aim is to facilitate rebuilding from the global COVID-19 crisis in a way that prioritizes sustainable development.
