Vimanika Comics is an Indian Comics Company which creates Comics & Graphic novel based on Indian mythology. [1] The company also has its presence in United Kingdom as Vimanika Comics UK. [2] The comics are available at all leading book stores in India.

History

Vimanika Comics was the first of its kind Indian company to launch a graphic novel in India and United States. Vimanika comic books and graphic novels are based on Indian mythology. Vimanika Comics is a part of Vimanika Edutainment Pvt Ltd, which aims to create stories based on Indian, Asian, and Celtic mythology. The stories created are not confined to text but are also created in animated films, live-action films, games, merchandising, and toys. [3] Vimanika was a sponsor for the Comic Con India held at Delhi in 2015. [4] [5] Vimanika has tied up with apparel firm Kapsons for the sale of Vimanika T-shirts in northern India. [6] As well Vimanika Comics has tied up with Krome stores to cater to the graphic T-shirts in Ludhiana. [7]

Its previous Indian edition Chosen Spirits, published 2020, was shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature.

Narayan Debnath was an Indian comics artist, writer and illustrator. He created the Bengali comic strips Handa Bhonda (1962), Bantul the Great (1965) and Nonte Phonte (1969). He holds the record of longest running comics by an individual artiste for Handa Bhonda comics series which completed its continuous 53 years of running. He was the first and only comics artist in India who has received a D. Litt. degree. Debnath was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in the year 2021.

Shamik Dasgupta is an Indian comic book writer. He has done work for Virgin Comics, specifically for Ramayan 3392 A.D. a series based on the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana and set in a distant future. He has also written a one shot horror graphic novel called Virulents.

Comic Con India (CCI) is a series of annual comic-based conventions held in India. The first edition was held in New Delhi in 2011 and over the years has expanded to other major cities in India such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmadabad. There are annual comic cons now in all these cities. Cumulatively these five cities attract over 200,000 visitors with over 1200 exhibitors. Jatin Varma, the founder & managing director of Comic Con India, launched the first comic con in India in Delhi in 2011. Since 2014, Comic Con India has been conducted in collaboration with ReedPop, the organisers of the New York Comic Con and the MCM London Comic Con.

<i>Yakshi</i> (novel) 1967 novel by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan

Yakshi is a Malayalam novel written by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan in 1967. The novel follows a college lecturer, Srinivasan, who is disfigured in an accident in his college lab. He meets a beautiful woman who is willing to accept him despite his disfigurement. But after a while, Srinivasan begins to doubt that the woman is all she appears - or even human. In 1968, the novel was adapted into a film with same name starring Sathyan. In 1993, Yakshi was shown in BBC's Off the Shelf program as 12 episodes. In 1995, Hema Malini directed a telefilm in Hindi for Zee TV titled Mohini with Sudesh Berry and Madhoo. In 2013, a contemporary retelling of the novel titled Akam was released.

Gaman Palem an Indian comic book illustrator. He has illustrated more than 100 Indian children's comics, working mainly on mythological subjects.

<i>O Kadhal Kanmani</i> (soundtrack) 2015 soundtrack album by A. R. Rahman

O Kadhal Kanmani is the soundtrack album, composed by A. R. Rahman, to the 2015 Indian Tamil film of the same name written and directed by Mani Ratnam. The soundtrack album consists of nine tracks each in original Tamil and Telugu version of the albums with one track "Maula Wa Sallim" being common to both. Majority of the tracks for the original version were penned by Vairamuthu. The lyrics to the Telugu version were written by Sirivennela Sitaramasastri.The lyrics to its Hindi version songs in its Hindi remake OK Jaanu is by Gulzar The songs are fusion of contemporary music with carnatic music as well as pure classical Indian music based songs in the genres—carnatic and Hindustani. The original score was produced by ensemble Qutb-e-Kripa along with Rahman. The score utilises the songs and re-performed carnatic compositions of musicians Tyagaraja and Annamacharya.

Orijit Sen is an Indian graphic artist and designer. His graphic novel River of Stories, published in 1994 by Kalpavriksh, is considered as the first graphic novel of India. He co-founded People Tree in 1990 as a "collaborative studio and store for artists, designers, and craftspeople." He is one of the founders of The Pao Collective of comic book artists; PAO: The Anthology Of Comics 1 by Penguin Books India won the 2nd Comic Con India Awards 2012 in the best graphic anthology category. He is Mario Miranda Chair visiting professor at Goa University. The Disappearing Tiger, a T-shirt designed by him featured at The Fabric of India exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. His diverse works, which include public art works, have been exhibited in India, England, Russia, France, Japan, Canada, and various other countries.

Yali Dream Creations LLC, known as YDC, is an Indian comic books publisher, focused on creating original stories using comics and graphic novels. YDC was founded in 2012 by Asvin Srivatsangam, and published its first graphic novel in 2013, written by Shamik Dasgupta.

Webcomics have grown in popularity in India since the early 2000s. Early webcomics created by Indian people were written and illustrated by people abroad and focused primarily on the differences in culture the creators experienced. Later webcomics put a strong emphasis on social and political issues present in the country, usually from a liberal perspective. Webcomics can reach large audiences in India when shared through social media.

The Vanished Path: A Graphic Travelogue is a graphic novel written and illustrated by Bharath Murthy, and published in March, 2015, by HarperCollins Publishers India. It is Bharath's first book-length comic.

Khyrunnisa A. is an Indian author of children's fiction, speaker, academic and columnist who also writes for adults. She created the comic book character 'Butterfingers'. The character first appeared in the Indian children's magazine Tinkle. Thirteen-year-old Amar Kishen, aka Butterfingers, now features in the eponymous Butterfingers series of novels and short story collections published by Puffin, the children's imprint of Penguin Random House India.

Kadak Collective is a collaborative group of female artists from South Asia, who work on graphic art projects, including zines, publications, and other forms of story-telling. Its members include filmmaker and webcomic creator Aarthi Parthasarthy, comic artist and illustrator Kaveri Gopalakrishnan.

<i>Atharva – The Origin</i> Graphic Novel

This novel is being touted as India’s first three-dimensional graphic novel with a realistic visual interpretation of about 150 scenes. Atharva – The Origin is a graphic novel authored by Ramesh Thamilmani features over 150 lifelike illustrations which present the gripping, racy narrative. It is produced by M.V.M. Vel mohan, Vincent Adaikalaraj and Ashok Manor. Reportedly, the makers are also planning to make a web-series based on the novel.
