Viola Irene Desmond was a Canadian civil and women's rights activist and businesswoman of Black Nova Scotian descent. In 1946, she challenged racial segregation at a cinema in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, by refusing to leave a whites-only area of the Roseland Theatre. For this, she was convicted of a minor tax violation for the one-cent tax difference between the seat that she had paid for and the seat that she used, which was more expensive. Desmond's case is one of the most publicized incidents of racial discrimination in Canadian history and helped start the modern civil rights movement in Canada.

Viola is the owner of the Florida Panthers, a National Hockey League (NHL) ice hockey team. Viola High School is a comprehensive public high school located in Viola, Arkansas, United States. It is one of three public high schools in Fulton County and the sole high school administered by Viola School District. For the 2010–11 school year, the school provides secondary education for approximately 200 students in grades 7 through 12 and employs more than 18 educators.

Ashley Viola Gantt is an American lawyer, politician, and former schoolteacher. She is the District 109 Representative in the Florida House of Representatives.

Viola Mary Johnson Coleman was the first African-American female physician to practice medicine in Midland, Texas. She was active in advocating for the desegregation of schools and for the integration of hospitals in Midland. In 1945, she enlisted the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in bringing a lawsuit against Louisiana State University medical school for denying her admission based upon her race, a decade before some of the most influential civil rights actions such as in Montgomery and Little Rock. In part due to Coleman's case, NAACP lawyers pursued similar litigation for desegregation of schools in the late 1940s and 1950s, including the U.S. Supreme Court case Sweatt vs Painter. She was known as a compassionate physician and figurehead in the Midland community, never turning anyone away even if they couldn't pay for medical care.
