Violet McBride MBE (born 16 October 1954) is a former women's field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented both Ireland and Great Britain at international level. She represented Great Britain at the 1988 Summer Olympics. In 1989 she was awarded the MBE . In 2011 she was inducted into the Irish Hockey Association Hall of Fame. McBride is also a former drum major World champion, winning the title in both 1980 and 1982. McBride has also represented Ireland as a senior ladies golfer.

Early years, family and education

McBride was raised in Kilkeel, County Down. She is the daughter of Henry and Dorothy McBride. She has two brothers, Alan and Harry. [1] She was educated at Kilkeel High School. [2] [3]

Domestic teams

While attending Kilkeel High School, McBride played field hockey on Saturday mornings for the school and for Portadown Ladies in the afternoon. She also represented Ulster at interprovincial level. [2] [4] In 2001–02 McBride played for the first official Pegasus veterans team and finished the season as player of the year. [5] [6]

International

Ireland

McBride made 38 senior appearances for Ireland. [1] [2] In 1981, along with Jenny Givan, she was banned from playing for Ireland for six years by the Irish Ladies Hockey Union after opting to play for Great Britain. [7] In 2011 McBride was inducted into the Irish Hockey Association Hall of Fame. [8] [9]

Great Britain

McBride made 64 senior appearances for Great Britain. While playing for Great Britain, she was named the team's Player of the Year for 1987. She represented Great Britain at the 1988 Summer Olympics and captained the team in the bronze medal match against the Netherlands. [1] [2] [4] [10] [11]

Drum major

McBride is also a former drum major World champion, winning the title in both 1980 and 1982. She was the first ever woman to win the title. She has also won Ulster, All-Ireland, British, European, Cowal and Scottish championships. Her brother, Alan, was also a Drum major World champion, winning five titles in 1985, 1991, 1995, 1997 and 1999. [1] [4] [12] [13]

Golf

McBride has also represented Ireland as a senior ladies golfer. She plays for Belvoir Park Golf Club. She is also a lifetime honorary member at her local club in Kilkeel. [1] [4] [14] [15]

Stephen Alexander Martin is a former field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented both Ireland and Great Britain at international level. Between 1980 and 1991 he made 135 senior appearances for Ireland. He also captained the Ireland team. He represented Ireland at the 1983, 1987 and 1991 EuroHockey Nations Championships and at the 1990 Men's Hockey World Cup. Between 1983 and 1992 Martin also made 94 senior appearances for Great Britain. He represented Great Britain at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal in 1984 and a gold medal in 1988. In 1994 he was awarded an. In 2001 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Ulster University. In 2011 Martin was inducted into the Irish Hockey Association Hall of Fame. After retiring as a field hockey player, Martin became a sports administrator. Billy McConnell is a former field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented both Ireland and Great Britain at international level. He represented Great Britain at the 1984 Summer Olympics when they won the bronze medal. He also represented Ireland at the 1990 Men's Hockey World Cup.

Pegasus Hockey Club is a women's field hockey club based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The club enter teams in the Women's Irish Hockey League, the Irish Senior Cup, the Irish Junior Cup and the Ulster Shield. Pegasus has also represented Ireland in European competitions. Pegasus was founded in 1961 by students and teachers from the Ulster College of Physical Education, Jordanstown and Stranmillis University College. The Pegasus name is an acronym of Physical Education Girls and Staff Ulster College and Stranmillis.

Barbara Amy Bridget Jackson is an English amateur golfer. She won the 1954 Girls Amateur Championship, the 1956 English Women's Amateur Championship and the 1967 Canadian Women's Amateur. She played in three Curtis Cup matches, 1958, 1964 and 1968.

Isabella Robertson is a Scottish golfer who won the British Ladies Amateur in 1981. Robertson represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup as a player on seven occasions and twice as non-playing captain. She was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

Elena Joy Neill, also referred to as Lena Tice, is an Ireland women's field hockey international. She was a member of the Ireland team that played in the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup final. Tice is also an Ireland women's cricket international. She was a dual Ireland women's cricket and field hockey international by the age of 17. In 2011, she made her senior international cricket debut, aged just 13 years and 272 days. As a result, after Pakistan's Sajjida Shah, Tice became the second youngest player in the history of cricket, male or female, to make their international debut playing in an official One Day International or Twenty20 International. She also represented Ireland at the 2014 ICC Women's World Twenty20. Tice has also won Irish Senior Cup and Women's Irish Hockey League titles with UCD Ladies' Hockey Club.

Shirley McCay is an Ireland women's field hockey international. She was a member of the Ireland team that played in the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup final. McCay has played in the Women's Irish Hockey League for Old Alex, Ulster Elks and Pegasus. She was a member of the Ulster Elks team that won two successive Irish Senior Cup titles in 2014–15 and 2015–16. Since 2015 she has been Ireland's most capped women's field hockey international.

Margaret Gleghorne, also known as Maggie Gleghorne, is a former women's field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented both Ireland and Great Britain at international level.
