Produced by British production company Hat Trick Productions, Derry Girls was filmed in Northern Ireland, with most scenes shot on location in Derry and some in Belfast.

It was released on Netflix on 2 October 2020. Exploring the themes of class, caste, and prejudice, the film is a reminder of the challenges that Dalit people face in India.
The 51st International Emmy Awards ceremony, presented by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS), took place on November 20, 2023, at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City, in recognition to the best television programs initially produced and aired outside the United States in 2022.
