Virginia's 11th House of Delegates district elects one of the 100 members of the Virginia House of Delegates. Located in southwestern Virginia, District 11 includes part of the city of Roanoke. [1] [2] District 11 is represented by Democrat Sam Rasoul.

Electoral history

2013

The seat has been held by Democrat Sam Rasoul since 2013. [3] Previous incumbent Onzlee Ware resigned in late 2012 to spend time with an ailing family member, prompting a special election in January 2013. [4] Rasoul won the low-turnout contest, in which just 14% of eligible voters participated. [4] Rasoul earned 70% of the vote, defeating Roanoke’s Republican sheriff Octavia Johnson. [4]

Sam Rasoul is an American politician. A Democrat, Rasoul was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in January 2014. He is the one of two Muslim members of the Virginia General Assembly. He represents the Virginia's 11th House of Delegates district, which is made up of part of the City of Roanoke. In November 2020, Rasoul announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2021.

The elections coincided with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, as well as House of Representatives elections, Senate elections and various state and local elections. The primaries were held on June 14.

The Virginia House of Delegates election of 2017 was held on Tuesday, November 7. All 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates were contested. The Republican Party held a 66–34 majority in the House of Delegates before the election but lost 15 seats to the Democratic Party, resulting in the Republicans holding a 50–49 advantage. After a recount, the result of the election in the 94th district was called a tie. The candidate to hold the seat was determined by random drawing on January 4, 2018, which resulted in the Republicans holding a 51–49 majority.

The 2019 Virginia House of Delegates election was held on November 5, 2019, concurrently with the elections for the Senate of Virginia, to elect members to the 161st Virginia General Assembly. All 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates were up for election. It resulted in Democrats gaining 6 seats in the House of Delegates, and gaining control of both chambers of the General Assembly, marking the first time that Democrats held control of both legislative and executive branches in Virginia since 1993.

Ronnie R. Campbell is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, first elected in a special election in 2018. Campbell represents the 24th district comprising Rockbridge and Bath Counties, parts of Amherst and Augusta Counties, and the independent cities of Lexington and Buena Vista.

Ibraheem S. Samirah is an American dentist and politician serving as a State Delegate from Virginia. In February 2019, he was elected in a special election to the Virginia House of Delegates for the 86th district. Samirah was re-elected to a full term on November 5, 2019. He is a Democrat. He is the youngest elected legislator in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
