Salam "Sam" Rasoul (born June 30,1981) is an American politician serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 38th district. [1] He is one of the two Muslim members of the Virginia General Assembly. [1] In November 2020,Rasoul announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2021. [2] Despite a significant fundraising advantage, [3] Rasoul placed 2nd in the Democratic primary losing to Hala Ayala by 64,352 votes. [4]
Rasoul was born in Warren,Ohio in 1981,the son of Palestinian immigrants. [5] He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Roanoke College and a Master of Business Administration from Hawaii Pacific University. [6]
Rasoul first ran for elected office in 2008 when he challenged incumbent Republican Bob Goodlatte for Virginia's 6th Congressional seat. He lost to Goodlatte by 25 percentage points in the heavily Republican district. [7]
Rasoul was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in a special election held on January 7,2014. The special election was held to fill the vacancy created by the November 2013 resignation of Delegate Onzlee Ware. [8] After winning the Democratic primary by 44 votes,Rasoul received nearly 70% of the vote over his Republican opponent Octavia Johnson in the general election. [9] He was inducted into office on January 8,2014. [10]
Rasoul is a member of the Legislative Black Caucus and Rural Caucus in the House of Delegates. [11]
He was a candidate in the 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election. [11] Rasoul lost to Hala Ayala. If nominated,he would've been the first Muslim candidate to run statewide anywhere in the South and the first Virginia statewide nominee from Roanoke since Ray Garland,who ran for U.S. Senate in 1971. [12]

Robert William Goodlatte is an American politician,attorney,and lobbyist who served in the United States House of Representatives representing Virginia's 6th congressional district for 13 terms. A Republican,he was also the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee,which has jurisdiction over legislation affecting the federal courts,administrative agencies,and federal law enforcement entities. Goodlatte's district covered Roanoke and also included Lexington,Lynchburg,Harrisonburg,and Staunton.
Winsome Sears is an American politician and Marine Corps veteran serving as the 42nd lieutenant governor of Virginia. A member of the Republican Party,Sears served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2002 to 2004. She also served on the Virginia Board of Education,and she ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 3rd congressional district in 2004 and for U.S. Senate in 2018. In 2021,Sears was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia. Sears is a candidate for the 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election.

She was also a candidate for Virginia State Senate in the 33rd District,losing the Democratic primary to Jennifer Carroll Foy on June 20,2023.
The 2021 Virginia gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next governor of Virginia. The election was concurrent with other elections for Virginia state offices. Incumbent Democratic governor Ralph Northam was ineligible to run for re-election,as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits governors from serving consecutive terms. Businessman Glenn Youngkin won the Republican nomination at the party's May 8 convention,which was held in 37 polling locations across the state,and was officially declared the nominee on May 10. The Democratic Party held its primary election on June 8,which former governor Terry McAuliffe easily won.
The 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next lieutenant governor of Virginia. Incumbent Democratic Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax was eligible to run for a second term,but instead unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. On November 3,Hala Ayala conceded the race,making Republican Winsome Sears the first black woman to be elected to the lieutenant governorship of Virginia or any statewide office,as well as the first woman elected lieutenant governor in Virginia's history. The 2023 Virginia Senate election was held on Tuesday,November 7,2023,concurrently with elections for the Virginia House of Delegates,to elect senators to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 163rd and 164th Virginia Assembly. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20,2023. These were the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census. The Democrats retained control of the Senate.
