Joshua Gregory Cole (born July 25,1990) is an American politician. A Democrat,he served one term as member of the Virginia House of Delegates as the representative of Virginia's 28th district. Elected by the Democratic Party of Virginia,Cole served as a member of the Democratic National Committee at the 2020 convention. [2] Cole was elected to represent Virginia's 65th district in the 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election. [3]
Cole was born in Washington,D.C.,and grew up in Stafford County,Virginia. He graduated from North Stafford High School and attended Liberty University for three years. He currently attends the University of Mary Washington.
He worked for Liberty University and Richmond City Public Schools. He was also a pastor and is the immediate past president of the Stafford County NAACP. [4] Cole has also had many staff positions in the Virginia Assembly. Between the 2017 and 2019 elections,he was chief of staff to Delegate Kelly Convirs-Fowler. [5]
In 2017,Cole ran for the 28th district in the 2017 Virginia House of Delegates election but lost to Bob Thomas by 73 votes. [6]
In 2019,Cole announced his campaign for the same seat in the 2019 election. He faced then Stafford County Supervisor,Paul V. Milde,who had defeated Thomas in the Republican primary. [7] Cole won with 51.8% of the vote. [8]
His 2021 re-election won the support of the LGBTQ Victory Fund,an organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ candidates. [9] He also received endorsement from the Collective PAC,Joe Biden,Kamala Harris,and Barack Obama. Cole was defeated for re-election in November 2021 by Tara Durant. [10]
In 2023,Cole declared his candidacy for the redrawn 65th district. [11] He won the seat in the general election. [12]

District 64,located in Isle of Wight County,Prince George County,Suffolk,Surry County,was represented by Republican Rick Morris from 2012 to 2018. Due to scandal,Morris did not seek re-election in Virginia's November 2017 elections. Based on the results of the election,the seat has been held by Republican Emily Brewer since January 2018. Emily Brewer defeated Democrat Michele Joyce in district 64 on November 5,2019 and won reelection on November 2,2021.

Robert M. "Bob" Thomas,Jr. is an American businessman,Marine Corps veteran,and former member of the Virginia House of Delegates. In 2017 he ran for the House of Delegates in the 28th district to succeed the retiring incumbent Speaker Bill Howell. After a very close race and multiple legal issues,Thomas was certified as the winner and was sworn in as scheduled on January 10,2018.
The 2019 Virginia House of Delegates election was held on Tuesday,November 5,2019,concurrently with the elections for the Senate of Virginia,to elect members to the 161st Virginia General Assembly. All 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates were up for election. It resulted in Democrats gaining 6 seats in the House of Delegates,and gaining control of both chambers of the General Assembly,marking the first time that Democrats held control of both legislative and executive branches in Virginia since 1993.

Virginia voters chose electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote,pitting the Republican Party's nominee,incumbent President Donald Trump,and running mate Vice President Mike Pence against Democratic Party nominee,former Vice President Joe Biden,and his running mate California Senator Kamala Harris. Virginia has 13 electoral votes in the Electoral College.

Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20,2023. These were the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census. The Democrats retained control of the Senate.
