Elections in Virginia |
---|
The 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election took place on November 7, 2023, concurrently with elections for the Virginia Senate, to elect members of the 163rd Virginia General Assembly. All 100 delegates were elected to two-year terms from single-member districts. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023. [3] Democrats gained 3 seats, winning back control with a 51–49 majority after having previously lost it in 2021. [4]
Following the 2021 election, Republicans regained control of the House of Delegates that was lost to the Democrats in 2019. They controlled a narrow majority of 52 seats prior to the 2023 election. [5]
After the 2022 General Assembly session, House Democrats voted via a secret ballot to remove former speaker and then-minority leader Eileen Filler-Corn from the top of party leadership. [6] House Democrats would replace Filler-Corn with Don Scott as the new minority leader. [7]
The 2023 election was the first held under new district maps following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census. [8] In 2020, voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment to create an independent redistricting committee. This committee ultimately failed to agree on a newly drawn map. [9] The districts delegates ran in were created by two special masters appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia. [10]
Governor Glenn Youngkin sought a Republican trifecta, already having control of the House of Delegates after the 2021 election, he sought to hold the House and flip Virginia's Senate to enact his conservative agenda over Democratic objections. However, this is the first state-level election in Virginia following the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision the previous year, which ruled that abortion is not a constitutional right in the United States. Youngkin attempted to change Republican messaging on abortion by proposing a 15-week abortion "limit" instead of using the word "ban", hoping his abortion plan would come across as sensible to Virginia voters, but it backfired. Democrats recaptured control of the House of Delegates, flipping three seats. Democrats also maintained their majority in the Senate, re-establishing unified Democratic rule of the Virginia legislature. [11]

There were four special elections for the 162nd Virginia General Assembly. The first was held on January 11, 2022. The following two were held on January 10, 2023. The fourth was held on August 29, 2023.

The 1972 United States House of Representatives elections were held on November 7, 1972, to elect U.S. Representatives to serve in the 93rd United States Congress. This was the first election held after the 1970 United States redistricting cycle. It coincided with the landslide reelection victory of President Richard M. Nixon. Nixon's Republican Party managed to gain a net of twelve House of Representatives seats from the Democratic Party, although the Democrats retained a majority.
The 1962 United States House of Representatives elections was an election for the United States House of Representatives on November 6, 1962, to elect members to serve in the 88th United States Congress. They occurred in the middle of President John F. Kennedy's term. As in most midterm elections, Kennedy's Democratic Party lost seats to the opposition Republican Party, but retained a majority. House Democrats were expected to lose their majority, but the resolution over the Cuban Missile Crisis just a few weeks prior led to a rebound in approval for the Democrats under President Kennedy.
The 1952 United States House of Representatives elections was an election for the United States House of Representatives to elect members to serve in the 83rd United States Congress. They were held for the most part on November 4, 1952, while Maine held theirs on September 8. This was the first election after the congressional reapportionment based on the 1950 census. It also coincided with the election of President Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower's Republican Party gained 22 seats from the Democratic Party, gaining a majority of the House. However, the Democrats had almost 250,000 more votes (0.4%) thanks to overwhelming margins in the Solid South, although this election did see the first Republican elected to the House from North Carolina since 1928, and the first Republicans elected from Virginia since 1930. It was also the last election when both major parties increased their share of the popular vote simultaneously, largely due to the disintegration of the American Labor Party and other third parties.

Texas had thirty-two seats in the House, apportioned according to the 2000 United States census. The state gained two seats in reapportionment. Democrats narrowly maintained control of the Texas House of Representatives after the 2000 election after heavily emphasizing it as necessary to protect the party from a potential Republican gerrymander. During the 2001 regular session, the divided legislature failed to pass any redistricting plans. Congressional redistricting fell to the courts in Balderas v. State of Texas after no special session was called to address redistricting. While the court's initial map appeared to benefit Republicans, the final maps ordered for the 2002 elections were seen as beneficial to Democrats.
