Political career
When William Fralin retired in 2009 from his 17th House of Delegate seat,Head ran for the Republican nomination. He finished second in a five-way primary to William Cleaveland.
Cleaveland chose not to run for a second term in 2011,and Head was nominated to replace him. Head defeated Democratic candidate Freeda S. Cathcart in the general election,11852-6207. [3]
In the House,Head most recently served as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Health,Welfare,and Institutions,as well as on the House Committee on Commerce and Labor,the House Committee on Privileges and Elections,and the House Committee on Rules. He previously served on the House Committee on Appropriations,House Committee on Finance,and the House Committee on Military,Police,&Public Safety. [4] He also serves on the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules,which reviews regulations of the executive branch. [2] He is also the founder and chairman of the Business Development Caucus in the House of Delegates. [5] He previously served as Co-Chair of the Virginia Small Business Commission.
Following redistricting,Head sought election to the Virginia Senate in 2013. Head secured the Republican nomination uncontested and later defeated Democratic candidate Jade Harris in the general election (65.88% to 33.99%). He currently serves on the Senate Committee on Education &Health,the Senate Committee on General Laws &Technology,and the Senate Committee on Rehabilitation &Social Services.
Botetourt County is a US county that lies in the Roanoke Region of Virginia. Located in the mountainous portion of the state, the county is bordered by two major ranges, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains.
Ralph Kelly Smith is an American politician and businessman. A Republican, Smith was the mayor of Roanoke and served two terms in the Virginia Senate.
Lacey Edward Putney was an American politician. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from January 1962 until January 2014, making him the longest-serving member in the history of the Virginia General Assembly and one of the longest-serving state legislators in American history. He represented a district centered around his hometown of Bedford for his entire career, and at various times represented parts of neighboring Bedford and Botetourt counties.
Algie Thomas Howell, Jr. is an American politician. From 2004 to 2014 he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 90th district, made up of parts of the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

Stephen Dwayne Newman is an American politician of the Republican Party. He served in the Virginia General Assembly from 1991 to 2024, first in the House (1991-1996) and then in the Senate of Virginia (1996–2024). In 2016, Newman became president pro tempore of the Senate of Virginia. However, in the 2019 Virginia Senate election, although Newman won re-election from his district, Democrats won the majority. On January 8, 2020, Louise Lucas, a senior Democratic senator succeeded Newman as president pro tempore.
Salam "Sam" Rasoul is an American politician serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 38th district. He is one of the two Muslim members of the Virginia General Assembly. In November 2020, Rasoul announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2021. Despite a significant fundraising advantage, Rasoul lost the Democratic primary to Hala Ayala by a large margin.
Christopher Todd Gilbert is an American politician and attorney. He previously served as the 57th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2022 to 2024. He has been a Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates since 2006, representing the 15th district in the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains, made up of Page and Shenandoah Counties, plus parts of Rockingham and Warren Counties.

William Harrison "Bill" Cleaveland is an American politician and jurist. He was a Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates 2010–2012, representing the 17th district, which included parts of Botetourt and Roanoke Counties and the city of Roanoke in the western part of the state. On January 30, 2013, he was sworn in as a judge of the General District Court of Botetourt and Craig Counties.
James Easley Edmunds II is an American politician. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2010 to 2024, representing the 60th district in Southside Virginia. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Eileen Robin Filler-Corn is an American lawyer and politician who served as the Minority Leader of the Virginia House of Delegates from January to April 2022, a position she previously held from 2019 to 2020. She previously served as the 56th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2020 to 2022. She represented the 41st district in the Fairfax County suburbs of Washington, D.C., from 2010 to 2024. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She is also the first woman and Jew to serve as Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates.
David-Imad Ramadan is a Lebanese-born American politician and businessman. He is a former Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 87th district in Loudoun and Prince William counties from 2012 to 2016. He opted not to seek re-election in 2015, and was succeeded by his 2013 opponent, Democrat John J. Bell.
Alfonso Hoffman Lopez is an American politician, former Obama administration official, and member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He has served in the House of Delegates since January 2012, representing the 49th district, which includes parts of southern Arlington and eastern Fairfax Counties, in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.

Joseph R. Yost is an American politician. A Republican, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2011. He represented the 12th district from 2012 to 2018. Yost was indicted for embezzlement charges in January 2022.

District 17 represents part of the city of Roanoke as well as parts of Botetourt and Roanoke counties. The seat is currently held by Republican Christopher T. Head.
