William M. Stanley Jr. (born July 21,1967) is an American politician. A Republican,he was elected in 2011 to the Senate of Virginia for the 20th district. The 20th district includes the cities of Galax and Martinsville,Henry and Patrick counties,part of the city of Danville,and parts of five other Southside Virginia counties. [1] [2]
Stanley was born in Milton,Florida,the son of a United States Navy aviator. The family purchased a home Franklin County,Virginia after his father retired in 1983. Stanley received a B.S. degree from Hampden-Sydney College,and a J.D. from the District of Columbia School of Law. He joined the Northern Virginia law firm of Gilbert Davis,where he was involved in Paula Jones' sexual harassment lawsuit against President Bill Clinton. In 1999 he moved back to Franklin County and began to practice law there. [1] [2]
He co-owns a Modified team with former NASCAR driver,professional wrestler and politician Hermie Sadler that competes in the SMART Modified Tour and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. In 2024,The team won their first championship in the SMART Modified Tour with Luke Baldwin. [3]
Stanley was elected Franklin County Republican Committee chair in 2008,and Virginia's 5th Congressional District Republican Committee chair in 2010. [2]
In 2009,Stanley's home in Franklin County was shifted into the neighboring 20th District of incumbent Democrat Roscoe Reynolds. Stanley ran in the 20th and defeated Reynolds,23975 (46.8%)-23331 (45.54%). W. Jeff Evans,the 2007 Republican candidate,ran as an independent,finishing third with 7.58% of the vote. [4]
Stanley wrote the 2023 Virginia law requiring age verification for access to online pornography. He has said that this has led to threats against his family. [5]
The Senate of Virginia is the upper house of the Virginia General Assembly. The Senate is composed of 40 senators representing an equal number of single-member constituent districts. The Senate is presided over by the lieutenant governor of Virginia. Prior to the American War of Independence, the upper house of the General Assembly was represented by the Virginia Governor's Council, consisting of up to 12 executive counselors appointed by the colonial royal governor as advisers and jurists.
South Boston Speedway, or "SoBo", is a short track located just outside South Boston, Virginia. SoBo is located approximately 60 miles (97 km) east of another area familiar to most NASCAR fans, Martinsville. It is owned by Mattco, Inc., the Mattioli family trust that owns Pocono Raceway, with general manager Brandon Brown operating the track, replacing Cathy Rice who retired in 2021 after serving in that role for 21 years and Chase Brashears who was in the role for two years. NASCAR's three national series have raced at the track, though the Cup Series has not done so since 1971, while the Busch Series last raced there in 2000. After the Busch Series left the schedule, the Craftsman Truck Series competed at SoBo for a few years between 2001 and 2003. The SRX Series visited the track in 2022.

In a rematch of the 2010 special election, incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Joe Manchin won re-election to a first full term against the Republican nominee, John Raese. The 2023 Virginia Senate election was held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, concurrently with elections for the Virginia House of Delegates, to elect senators to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 163rd and 164th Virginia Assembly. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023. These were the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census. The Democrats retained control of the Senate.
Luke Baldwin is an American professional stock car racing driver who competes part-time in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, driving the No. 38 for Philip Stefanilli, and the No. 7 for Tommy Baldwin Racing. He is the son of former NASCAR Cup Series crew chief and owner of TBR, Tommy Baldwin Jr., and the grandson of the late Tom Baldwin, who also competed in the Modified Tour.
