The Republican Party of Virginia (RPV) is the Virginia chapter of the Republican Party. It is based at the Richard D. Obenshain Center in Richmond.
Virginia's 8th congressional district is located just across the Potomac River from Washington,D.C.. It comprises several populous suburbs in Northern Virginia,including all of Alexandria,Arlington,and Falls Church,as well as parts of Fairfax County. Democrat Don Beyer has held the seat since 2015. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of D+26,it is the most Democratic district in Virginia.
2006 Virginia Question 1,the Marshall-Newman Amendment is an amendment to the Constitution of Virginia that defines marriage as solely between one man and one woman and bans recognition of any legal status "approximat[ing] the design,qualities,significance,or effects of marriage". The amendment was ratified by 57% of the voters on November 7,2006. It became part of the state Constitution as Section 15-A of Article 1. In 2014,the amendment was ruled unconstitutional in Bostic v. Schaefer.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Virginia since October 6,2014,following the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court not to hear an appeal of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling in Bostic v. Schaefer. Same-sex marriages subsequently began at 1:00 p.m. on October 6 after the Fourth Circuit issued its mandate,and since then Virginia has performed legal marriages of same-sex couples and recognized out-of-state same-sex marriages. Previously,the state had passed a statute prohibiting same-sex marriage in 1975,and further restrictions were added in 1997 and 2004,which made "void and unenforceable" any arrangements between same-sex couples bestowing the "privileges or obligations of marriage". Voters approved an amendment to the Constitution of Virginia reinforcing the existing laws in 2006. On January 14,2014,a U.S. district court judge ruled in Bostic that Virginia's statutory and constitutional ban on the state recognition of same-sex marriages were unconstitutional,a decision upheld by the Fourth Circuit on July 28,2014.
Virginia's 45th House of Delegates district elects one of 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates,the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature. District 45 includes part of the city of Alexandria as well as parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties. The seat has been represented by Democrat Elizabeth Bennett-Parker since 2022.

While Republicans maintained an enormous edge against Democrats in the chamber,their net loss of one seat cost them their previously-held veto-proof majority against Governor Terry McAuliffe.
The 2019 Virginia Senate election was held on November 5,2019,concurrently with the House election,to elect members to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 161st Virginia General Assembly and the 162nd Virginia General Assembly. Primaries were held on June 11. The elections resulted in Democrats gaining 2 seats in the senate,and gaining control of both chambers of the General Assembly,marking the first time that Democrats held control of both legislative and executive branches in Virginia since 1993.
The 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election will be held on November 4,2025. Incumbent Republican governor Glenn Youngkin will be ineligible to run for re-election,as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits the state's governors from serving consecutive terms.
