Richard Cyril "Rip" Sullivan,Jr. (born March 14,1959) is an American activist serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 6th district,which encompasses parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties. Sullivan is a member of the Democratic Party.

Sullivan and his future wife Beth graduated from Langley High School in 1977. After graduating magna cum laude from Amherst College in 1981,he earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1987.
Sullivan has practiced law in Northern Virginia for nearly 30 years,most notably with law firm Reed Smith LLP. Following his election,Sullivan left Reed Smith and joined the Arlington-based firm of Bean Kinney &Korman.
Prior to becoming a lawyer,Sullivan helped create the United States Institute of Peace. Sullivan currently serves on the Chairman's Advisory Board of the Institute. He has served on numerous local,regional,and statewide boards and commissions.
Sullivan is the former president of Northern Virginia Legal Services,an organization that provides free counsel to low-income residents.
In 2020,Sullivan introduced and helped pass the Virginia Clean Economy Act,which was signed into law on April 11,2020. [1]
The 34th district race was one of the most expensive local campaigns in Virginia in 2007 because of Vince Callahan's political influence in Richmond. The race was targeted as a prime pickup opportunity by the Virginia Democratic Party. Democrat Margaret Vanderhye,a community activist from McLean,Virginia,announced her candidacy along with Sullivan in the Democratic primary. In the primary election on June 12,2007,Vanderhye defeated Sullivan by 149 votes,according to the State Board of Elections. Vanderhye went on to win the general election,but was defeated in 2009 by Republican Barbara Comstock.
On June 29,2014,Rip announced his candidacy for a special election for Virginia's 48th House of Delegates district to fill the seat of longtime Delegate Robert Brink,who resigned to take a job in the McAuliffe administration. On July 6,Sullivan won a firehouse primary over six other candidates to become the Democratic nominee for the seat. On August 19,Sullivan won in a landslide victory over opponent Dave Foster,winning by more than 24 points and winning every single precinct in the 48th District. [2]

Adam Paul Ebbin is an American politician who is the senator from the 39th District of the Virginia Senate since January 2024. A member of the Democratic Party,he previously represented the 39th Senate District from 2012 to 2024 and served in the Virginia House of Delegates from the 49th District from 2004 to 2012.
John Chapman "Chap" Petersen is an American politician. A Democrat,he served in the Virginia House of Delegates 2002–06,was elected to the Virginia State Senate in November 2007,and was reelected in 2011. He represented the state's 34th district,made up of the city of Fairfax and large parts of Fairfax County. In June 2023,Petersen lost the Democratic primary for District 37 to Saddam Azlan Salim. Salim won the general election,and assumed office on January 10,2024.
Margaret G. "Margi" Vanderhye is a McLean,Virginia community activist and a former delegate from the 34th district of Virginia. She was the Democratic nominee in the 2007 Virginia general election to fill the seat held by retiring incumbent Republican Vince Callahan,defeating Republican businessman Dave Hunt in the general election on November 6,2007. On November 3,2009,Vanderhye was narrowly defeated in her reelection bid by Republican Barbara Comstock.
Robert Hendricks "Bob" Brink is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party,he served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1998 to 2014,representing the 48th district in the Arlington and Fairfax County suburbs of Washington,D.C. He resigned to become deputy commissioner for aging services in the administration of Governor Terry McAuliffe.

The 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next lieutenant governor of Virginia. Incumbent Democratic Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax was eligible to run for a second term,but instead unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. On November 3,Hala Ayala conceded the race,making Republican Winsome Sears the first black woman to be elected to the lieutenant governorship of Virginia or any statewide office,as well as the first woman elected lieutenant governor in Virginia's history. Sears was also the first Jamaican-American to become a lieutenant governor.
The 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election took place on November 7,2023,concurrently with elections for the Virginia Senate,to elect members of the 163rd Virginia General Assembly. All 100 delegates are elected to two-year terms from single-member districts. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20,2023. Democrats gained 3 seats,winning back control with a 51-49 majority after having previously lost it in 2021.
