Leslie Ray Adams (born June 18,1974) is an American politician from Virginia. A member of the Republican Party,Adams succeeded Don Merricks as the member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 16th district in 2014 and resigned in December 2023,effective the following month,at the end of his term.
Leslie Adams was born in Montgomery County,Virginia,in 1974. [1] [2] He graduated from Liberty University with a Bachelor of Science in 1996 and from the University of Richmond School of Law with a Juris Doctor in 1999. [2]
Adams was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2013,representing the 16th district. [3] Despite being elected to represent the newly-drawn 48th district in the state's 2023 Virginia House of Delegates elections,he announced his resignation from the House on December 12,2023,effective at the end of his current term. [1] He is a member of the privileges and elections committee and the commerce and energy committee. [2]

Joseph Dee Morrissey is an American Democratic politician,businessman,and former lawyer who won election to both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly from districts including Richmond or surrounding Henrico County,Virginia. He represented Virginia's 16th Senate district from 2020 to 2024,having been elected during the 2019 election. He represented much of southern Richmond,as well as all of the cities of Petersburg and Hopewell and portions of Chesterfield,Dinwiddie and Prince George counties. He lost the 2023 Democratic primary for his district.

It resulted in Democrats gaining 6 seats in the House of Delegates,and gaining control of both chambers of the General Assembly,marking the first time that Democrats held control of both legislative and executive branches in Virginia since 1993.

Incumbent Democratic Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax was eligible to run for a second term,but instead unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. On November 3,Hala Ayala conceded the race,making Republican Winsome Sears the first black woman to be elected to the lieutenant governorship of Virginia or any statewide office,as well as the first woman elected lieutenant governor in Virginia's history. Herring initially planned to run for governor,but decided to run for re-election. Herring faced Republican nominee Jason Miyares in the general election. Herring conceded defeat at 5:02 PM EST the following day,November 3. Miyares became the first Cuban-American and Hispanic to be elected to statewide office in Virginia. Miyares was later sworn in on January 15,2022.

Democrats gained 3 seats,winning back control with a 51-49 majority after having previously lost it in 2021.
The 2023 Virginia Senate election was held on Tuesday,November 7,2023,concurrently with elections for the Virginia House of Delegates,to elect senators to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 163rd and 164th Virginia Assembly. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20,2023. These were the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census.
