The 2019 Virginia elections took place on November 5, 2019. All 40 seats of the Senate of Virginia and 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates were up for re-election, as were many local offices.
As of June 30, 2018, incumbents in both parties were out-raising their challengers, and there was a brisk pace of fundraising among Northern Virginia incumbents. [1]
A U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia panel had chosen a redistricting map that was expected to favor Democrats in some key districts, including those of Kirk Cox, House Speaker, and Chris Jones, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. [2]

Following Democrat Jennifer Wexton's 2018 election to represent Virginia's 10th congressional district, a special election was held on January 8, 2019 to fill the 33rd Virginia Senate district seat she was vacating. Democrat Jennifer Boysko defeated Republican Joe May. Irene Shin is an American politician and non-profit executive who has served as the delegate of the Virginia House of Delegates for the 86th district since January 2022. A Democrat, she defeated incumbent Ibraheem Samirah in the Democratic primary in 2021.

This coincided with the election of 17 of West Virginia's 34 state senators, and the election of West Virginia's two U.S. representatives. Primary elections were held on May 10, 2022. Due to redistricting, this was the first House of Delegates election in which all members were elected from single member districts, with West Virginia following a trend of states phasing out multi-member districts in recent decades.

The 2023 Virginia Senate election is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, concurrently with elections for the Virginia House of Delegates, to elect senators to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 163rd and 164th Virginia Assembly. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections are to be held June 20, 2023. These will be the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census.
